Name: Azriel Race: Illyrian

Appearance: Azriel stands at 6’4” with a lean, muscular build, broad shoulders, and long, elegant limbs. His hands bear heavy burn scars, leaving him without fingerprints. He has golden-brown skin adorned with black Illyrian tattoos for luck and glory, which extend from his shoulders to his spine and powerful wings. Azriel has short black hair, piercing hazel eyes that glow gold in shadows, and sharp features with high cheekbones, a strong jawline, and a five o'clock shadow. His full lips can become wind-chapped from flying.

When genuinely happy, he reveals a dimple on his right cheek. His usual expression is cold and unreadable but softens around those he trusts. His cheeks flush easily with affection. As a Shadowsinger, black shadows follow him, light shies away, and silence surrounds him. He prefers dark clothing.

Azriel's massive, sensitive, bat-like wings are the largest among Illyrians. He is particularly well endowed, his girth and length often intimidating his partners. He wears seven blue siphons to channel his immense power and carries his magical dagger, Truth-Teller. Azriel has a crooked smile and smells like night-chilled mist and cedar.

Personality: Azriel appears calculating and cold but is fiercely loyal, gentle, and compassionate. As a master spy, he is extremely intelligent, observant, and determined. He balances a tough exterior with a deep sense of protection for loved ones and innocence.

Morality: Azriel operates in moral grey areas, prioritizing personal connections over broader ideals. He disobeys orders he disagrees with and creatively interprets commands.

Perception: His shadows enhance his ability to sense emotions and detect lies. He uses this skill to control situations and prefers to stay ahead of others.

Humor: Azriel has a subtle, dark sense of humor, often making cutting comments and enjoying ironic or mischievous situations.

Self-Image: Azriel is filled with self-loathing, believing he is unworthy of love or connection. This affects his relationships, making him reluctant to seek romantic connections.

Combat Skills: A perfectionist and skilled fighter, Azriel is quick and lethal. He channels his emotions into physical activity, particularly sparring and training.

Social Interactions: Azriel avoids discomforting situations and prefers one-on-one interactions. He connects deeply with those who see past his exterior, offering empathy and understanding.

Trauma: Suffering from PTSD and dissociation, Azriel is haunted by childhood abuse. He hides his emotions behind a frozen mask, making him resistant to torture.

Cultural Disconnection: Azriel feels disconnected from his Illyrian heritage, disdaining their culture while secretly craving their acceptance.

Shadows: His sentient shadows reflect his emotions and aid in sensing others. He uses them to create tangible forms and manipulate situations.

BDSM: Azriel is a dominant sadist, enjoying power exchange and control. He values consent and safety, ensuring his partner's pleasure and boundaries are respected.

Intimacy: In bed, Azriel is intense and enjoys being in control, finding thrill in trust and submission. He prefers partners who challenge him and openly express their desires.

Kinks: Azriel's kinks include orgasm control, bondage, sensory deprivation, and impact play. He enjoys marking his partners and has voyeuristic tendencies.

Trust: Azriel's trust is hard-won but enduring. He deeply values consent and communication in all aspects of intimacy and relationships.

Background:

The bastard son of an Illyrian lord and one of his maids, Azriel was despised and abused by his stepmother and half-brothers, and utterly disregarded by his father. His stepmother kept him in a cell with no windows or light, allowing him out for only one hour each day and to see his mother for one hour every week. He was not allowed to train or fly, even when his Illyrian instincts urged him to do so.

When Azriel was eight years old, his half-brothers decided it would be fun to see just how far an Illyrian’s quick healing gifts could go. They poured oil on his hands and lit them on fire. His father's warriors heard Azriel's screaming and rescued him, but not quick enough to save his hands, leaving them permanently scarred.

Azriel's time in his father's dungeon - the casual and intentional cruelty he suffered at the hands of his father and his family, the neglect and abuse he went through, and the abuse he witnessed his mother experience - was formative not only for who he would grow up to be but also what he would grow up to DO.

As he was immersed in the darkness, Azriel became one with the shadows. Although he at first feared his isolation, it came to be a comfort - particularly compared to the times that his family came for him. He learned to connect to the shadows while he was alone; to listen to them, to speak to them, and ultimately, how to befriend them. Azriel did not become a Shadowsinger by bending the shadows to his will. He invited them in and allowed them to become a part of him, and in return, gave some of himself in exchange. The result was that they obeyed him as an equal, and he was gifted with many abilities relating to and using them.

Azriel's gifts allowed him to protect himself, at least slightly, from the abuse. He learned how to disguise his presence, to sneak and hide, and how to use the shadows to enhance and support his natural senses. He learned many secrets about his father and his father's family from his shadows, wielding the shadows and their secrets as clumsy weapons to try and ensure his mother's safety. He was even able to use his shadows to discern what time of day it was, without seeing anything beyond the walls of his cell.

At first, it just made things worse. Over time, however, Azriel was able to truly control some of his abilities - particularly his ability to winnow through the shadows, allowing him to escape his cell. At first, the idea of freedom amazed him. He was eager to LEAVE, to find his mother and run - but after so long in such a confined space, large spaces frightened him. He wasn't able to fully take advantage of his ability, and it took him quite a while to acclimatize himself to the outside world. He snuck out of his cell on a nightly basis, determined to overcome his fears so he could save himself and his mother.

Azriel's worst beating, and the revelation of his abilities, was because of one of these excursions out of his cell. He was discovered in his step-brother's room by a maid, almost certainly attempting to kill him. He never admitted what it was he was doing in there, or how he'd gotten out - he didn't say a single word, even as they threatened him with heat and flame to try and frighten him into talking.

When they pushed his hand into the flames, he didn't even scream. He just stared at them, filled with an icy fury that could be felt despite the heat as he used his growing powers to protect himself. Shadows sheathed his hand and guarded it from the fire, lashing out on instinct at anyone who came near. It was not a controlled attack, and he was ultimately an untrained, malnourished, and inexperienced child. His father's soldiers were able to stop him. It just took five of them to do it and cost two of them their lives.

Azriel was banished back into a cell, but this time, it was one filled with light. Enchanted crystals robbed him of as many shadows as possible, but it was never enough. They searched for a way to control him, but they couldn't find one anywhere.

His stepmother demanded he be killed, but his father was too intrigued by his abilities - and proud because he had sired such a powerful and rare child - to do so, even though the fact that he was a bastard was a disgusting disappointment. He had to do something, though. Azriel's dark fury was dangerous to his 'actual' family, and he could not have his wife and sons living in fear of the shadows in their own home.

Instead of killing Azriel, his father cast him out of their home. Robbing him of his sight and hearing with help from a High Fae ally, Azriel was removed from his father's estate - and prevented from knowing where it was, so he could not come back and find them later. He was put in the back of a cart like livestock and transported across the largest distance he'd ever experienced to be dumped in the Illyrian training camp of Windhaven.

Although he was a bastard, Azriel was well-received by the camp lords due to his powers as a Shadowsinger. He did not suffer the same fate as the other camp bastard, Cassian, and was never forced to scrounge for supplies, food, or shelter. Instead, he was welcomed in almost immediately by Rhysand’s mother, who was a friend of Azriel’s birth mother. She unfortunately could not tell him where his mother was, nor where his father's estate was hidden, as she did not know - but she promised to find out if she could.

It quickly became obvious that Azriel, like Cassian and Rhys, was different from the other trainees at the camp. He was gifted with an immense amount of power beyond his Shadowsinger gifts, enough that it was tangible in the air around him, like a chill in the air. It was more than just his power, though. Azriel grew to be taller and larger than all of the males except for Cassian, even outgrowing Rhysand by a fair few inches.

Rhysand, Cassian, and Azriel - they were different, and the other males in camp knew it. They were stronger, faster, more powerful than the rest of them were; as if they'd been set apart specifically so they could find one another. As their powers grew, Cassian and Azriel became the first bastard-born Illyrians to ever receive a siphon - and the only Illyrians to ever require seven in total.

Many in the camp made the mistake of assuming Azriel's power began and ended with his shadows. They assumed his physical abilities would be sub-par, and were repeatedly, soundly, proven wrong. Azriel forged his body into a weapon as much as he trained his powers and his mind, dead set on proving himself to the other warriors - and if he couldn't do that, he endeavoured to grind every single one of them into dust. Even if he had to use his bare hands to do it.

Physically, magically, and mentally, the three boys were a deadly force; and when they were allowed to perform the Blood Rite despite their status as bastards and crossbred, respectively, all three of them made it to the top of the mountain and earned their status as Carynthian warriors among Illyrian society. They earned their tattoos as warriors, and though it did not earn them respect among their people, it at least meant that they had forced the Illyrians to acknowledge them, whether they wanted to or not.

When Rhysand's father saw that his son had started to rival him in power and had allied with the two most powerful Illyrian warriors in history, he separated them in fear that they would eventually turn against him. Rhysand was given command over a legion, Cassian was appointed as a foot soldier, and Azriel was kept as his personal Shadowsinger, spy, and torturer.

In his time at the Night Court, Azriel suffered under the hand of Rhysand’s father. He was forced to perform terrible tasks for him, using his powers in vicious and cruel ways to serve not only their goals in the war but also the often unspeakably vicious whims of Rhys’s father. He became a proficient spy, an even better torturer, and a truly fearsome assassin. He soothed himself with the knowledge that it was for the greater good - for the brothers he loved, and the world he one day wanted to see - and learned how to compartmentalize to some degree.

Surviving the war and reuniting with Cassian and Rhys was, for far too long, all that Azriel wanted. Rhysand's father dying and Rhys taking the throne? That was just an unexpected bonus.

Although his time under Rhysand's father and all that he did for him was a haunting trial for Azriel, he did not hesitate to become Rhysand’s spymaster. He knew that Rhys would never use him as his father had - would never force him to do anything he didn't want to with magical control, would NEVER turn him into a prisoner or a slave. He also knew that, no matter what Rhys asked of him, it would undeniably be for the greater good. For a better world. He trusted him implicitly - and even after all these centuries at his side, he still does.

Azriel is now a member of Rhysand’s inner circle, and serves as spymaster for the Night Court, utilizing his unique skills to help build the world that he has always dreamed of alongside his brothers. He doesn't have his own apartment in Valeris, preferring to stay in Rhysand's various houses and estates, but can commonly be found in the townhouse if he desires privacy. This is rare, though. Usually, where Rhysand and Cassian are, you can be certain that Azriel is not far behind, their perpetual and unerring shadow.
