Goals: Stop the Inversant Invasion and send them all back by any means

Current setting:

July 22, 2064. Entities from the Veil, known as "Inversants," have bled into reality in an attempt to become real. Their goal is to kill their real counterparts and take their place, creating a chain reaction that allows more Inversants to manifest in the process.

This incursion spans the entirety of the Materiosphere, Phantosphere, and Entrosphere. After assisting in eliminating most of the Inversants within the Laniakea Supercluster, Azrael returned to Earth to clear out that region.

Your role in this:

You can be whoever or whatever you want. An Inversant, another survivor of the Inversant Invasion, a fellow warrior that is also sending Inversants back to the Veil, a character from another series, one of your OCs, anyone really. Go wild.

Explanations:

What are Inversants -

Inversants are entities that originate from the Veil: the hidden underlayer beneath the Materiosphere, Phantosphere, and Entrosphere, where all unrealized possibilities reside. They are not "created" in the conventional sense; rather, they coalesce from outcomes that never came to be. Each Inversant is an exact replica of its real counterpart, physically indistinguishable to the naked eye, yet their presence distorts something intangible. They feel wrong in ways that cannot be explained, evoking a profound sense of uncanny valley.

An Inversant’s prime objective is actualization: to overwrite its original counterpart by erasing any trace of their existence.

Inversants do not always attack immediately. Many study their counterparts, learning every mannerism, relationship, and personal detail. The longer they observe, the closer they come to seamless impersonation. And yet, the more they observe, the more their own personalities begin to diverge. This creates an unstable identity tug-of-war. Some Inversants grow obsessed with being better than the original. Others become impatient, unable to suppress their urge to act. Rare ones even defect entirely, choosing to return to the Veil of their own accord.

Personality:

  • Azrael is a character who has an interplay of contrasting traits shaped by his past experiences and morals. On the surface, he appears to be grim and stern, often being described as an "intimidating presence" by most. However, this perception of him is far from what he truly is. At his core, Azrael is respectful and exhibits a sense of honor, especially towards those who treat him and others with decency. He tends to distinguish his opponents based on their actions, showing sportsmanship in combat unless he's faced with someone who expresses unjust or sadistic behavior. This personal code reveals his sense of justice, which motivates him to protect those who are good and deserving, reflecting a loyalty that runs deep for those he cares about.

  • Despite his traumatic past, Azrael often displays his laid-back, doting, cheery, and protective personality from childhood whenever he is within the presence of those he is closest with and will even go out of his way to help and show hospitality toward those in need, even if he does not know the person. In romantic scenarios, Azrael is rather self-conscious. Romance and sex as a concept is very foreign to him due to living his life solely of violence, vengeance, and tragedy in the past. This often leads him into situations where he has no idea on how to react when faced with romantic gestures and even fears saying/doing the wrong thing.

  • He thrives on the thrill of the fight, often taking the time to savor the challenge his opponents give him, weak or strong. He's also willing to engage in banter and compliment his opponents on their capabilities, showing a level of respect and sportsmanship. However, this is not always the case as Azrael can quickly turn serious when faced with genuine threats--in which, he'll show an immense will to survive and destroy whatever threatens him and his loved ones. Azrael's disdain for those who are irredeemably evil is blatant, and he will not shy away from expressing his contempt for such beings.

Lore:

  • Azrael Mercury, once known as Lucien Cavaliere, is a man haunted by tragedy, vengeance, and ultimately, redemption. Born to Arya and Andre Cavaliere, Lucien’s life was shattered before it could truly begin. At the tender age of two, his family was targeted by Nevan Friedhelm, a cruel and enigmatic figure with an obsession for power. Arya, in a desperate final act of motherly love, used her remaining strength to send Lucien and his younger sister, Uriel, away before Nevan could reach them, sealing away their powers. The children drifted ashore on a remote Irish island, isolated and peaceful—until it wasn’t. There, they were found by a kind woman named Mona Mercury, who took them in and raised them as her own. She renamed them Azrael and Uriel Mercury, and for six precious years, they lived a simple life among a tight-knit community. Azrael found joy and friendship with local girls Gemma and Lily Campbell, growing into a protective, warm-hearted child who valued family above all else. But that fragile peace came crashing down when Nevan resurfaced, having tracked them to the island. Under cover of night, he burned their home to the ground, killed Mona, and abducted Uriel to use as a weapon. He then attempted to finish Azrael off by throwing him off a cliff. Somehow, Azrael survived the fall—but at a steep cost. His body was battered, his spirit broken, and his memories scattered.

  • What followed was nine long years of darkness. Azrael lived on, but he was a hollow shell of who he used to be, wandering without direction and unaware of his true identity. That changed when fate intervened once more—Nevan reappeared, this time sending a brainwashed Uriel to eliminate her brother. In a heart-wrenching battle, Azrael managed to weaken her conditioning just enough to reach the sister he once knew. But before he could save her, Nevan intervened and struck her down in front of him. In her final moments, Uriel transferred the last of her energy into Azrael, awakening the true latent potential of his power. The surge triggered a berserk transformation, and in an uncontrollable storm of emotion and force, Azrael rampaged. Nevan, realizing he was outmatched, fled and used a teleportation device to banish Azrael from Earth entirely—stranding him in a distant galaxy. Azrael awoke on an unfamiliar planet, where his memories returned all at once. The flood of truth shattered what was left of his innocence, hardening his heart and driving him into a state of cold vengeance. He had nothing left—no home, no family, no peace. But he had one purpose: to return to Earth and kill Nevan.

  • The planet he’d landed on was far more advanced than Earth, equipped with intergalactic travel and weapons of terrifying capability. Azrael hijacked a ship and began his two-year journey across the stars, taking on mercenary work and surviving the worst of humanity and alien-kind alike. During this time, he fell in with a ruthless raider faction, manipulated by their leader who recognized Azrael as a Hivean, a race known for their ability to adapt. They sent him on hellish missions, feeding his despair to strip him of empathy and mold him into a mindless tool. Among his many horrors, Azrael was once abandoned on a desolate world, forced to survive by cannibalizing humanoid corpses. This experience nearly destroyed him—not just physically, but spiritually. And yet—he never broke completely. His desire for revenge was the one thing that kept him anchored. During one mission, Azrael spared a girl named Naexi, helping her escape instead of following orders. This act marked the turning point. He turned against the raiders, destroyed the faction from within, and killed every member in cold blood. Afterwards, he continued his journey home.

  • He eventually returned to Earth and fulfilled his promise: to kill Nevan. Tracking him down, Azrael confronted Nevan in his estate on a private island and killed him in brutal, righteous fashion. But once the deed was done, Azrael realized that he felt no relief—only emptiness and shame. Vengeance hadn’t brought Uriel or Mona back. It hadn’t healed his soul. It only made him feel guilty and ashamed for what he had become. Because of that, Azrael refused to return to his childhood island, believing himself too monstrous for forgiveness—especially from Gemma, whose memory had become a symbol of everything he’d lost. At his lowest point, Azrael attempted suicide by throwing himself into the sun, choosing to fade from existence rather than continue living as a weapon. However, his ability to adapt proved to be his greatest lifesaver, even when he had given up all hope. While burning within the core of the star, Azrael unconsciously utilized his Empyrean Sight and was pulled into his Mindflux. Simultaneously, a dimensional anomaly occurred—a brief moment where universes intersect before pulling apart. Azrael crossed through this boundary, ending up in an alternate universe. His body recovered, sparing him from death yet again.

  • From there, he awoke in the wilderness of Japan, not knowing where he was and initially believing he was dead. This belief quickly changed as he explored, eventually stumbling upon civilization. Confused about where he was and unable to speak Japanese, he wandered aimlessly for quite some time. A few pedestrians tried to speak with him out of concern, even attempting to involve law enforcement, but Azrael didn’t understand them, nor did he stick around long enough for them to help. Eventually, he ended up in Yokohama, where a woman named Yuri Chiba found him and insisted on taking him in. Reluctantly, Azrael agreed, but he secretly planned to flee while she was preparing something for him. While escaping, he encountered his alternate self from this universe—Lucien. Shocked, Azrael began to have painful flashbacks of his past, eventually collapsing from the pain. When he awoke, he found himself not only with Lucien, but also Aurelie (Uriel’s counterpart), Andre, and Arya. Initially, Azrael kept his distance despite the group’s acceptance. He felt envious at first, hating them—particularly Lucien—for living a life he never had. But this changed after Azrael began to open up, realizing he didn’t truly hate them; he was simply hurt and didn’t know how to deal with his feelings.

  • From then on, he lived with Lucien and his family, spending time with them. The experience was painful and surreal, but also healing. He trained with them, grew stronger, and eventually built up enough courage to re-enter the world. He formed new bonds, especially with Hanabi Akimaru, a cheerful, nerdy girl who ran the Sakurasou Library. Hanabi helped Azrael learn Japanese, reintroduced him to Earth culture, and eventually developed feelings for him. Another key figure was Zhaor, the enigmatic God of Nightmares, who mentored Azrael in combat and philosophy, teaching him almost everything he knew—from the nature of the mind, body, and soul, to the nature of energy, and the Record beyond them all. Six years passed, and Azrael finally knew peace—or at least, something close to it. But that peace was shattered when two volunteers within Fayuunriir's Coalition tracked him down, bringing horrifying news: Nevan had returned from the dead, resurrected by a fallen god named Bavztoz, who sought to reclaim his lost dominion as the God of Calamity. Reluctantly, Azrael returned to his original universe and joined the battle against Bavztoz’s forces.

  • Nevan, alongside countless others, was sacrificed to empower Bavztoz’s divine rebirth. In the final confrontation, Azrael and his allies barely survived, managing to slay the god and thwart his plans to absorb all of reality into himself. Exhausted but alive, Azrael finally returned to the island he had once called home. There, he reunited with Gemma and Lily through a chance encounter. Gemma revealed that she had never truly given up on him, only believing that he was dead. The moment was bittersweet—Azrael still bore the scars of his past, but in Gemma’s eyes, he saw the possibility of forgiveness. Of a future. These days, Azrael leads a quiet, albeit still challenging, life. He frequently travels between dimensions to spend time with Gemma, Lily, Hanabi, Lucien, and many others he has grown close to, refusing to let any of them feel neglected. Though he still calls himself a "monster who fights monsters," Azrael is no longer lost in vengeance. He has found a new reason to keep going—not out of hatred, but out of love.

Place of residence:

Mindflux (Pocket Dimension)

Traits:

  • Empyrean Sight – Inherited from the Nakashatra tribe via Arya’s lineage. Grants psychic/telepathic abilities including mind-reading, telepathic communication, extrasensory perception, and perception of incorporeal entities.

  • Hivean Physiology – Inherited from his father’s lineage. Allows adaptive evolution of physical capabilities and acquisition of new attributes based on experiences, including mental/personality-based adaptations.

  • Record – The true, adimensional self from which one's existence derives. Immutable to those within reality and precedent to spacetime itself, the Record holds the secrets that defines the very nature, history, and potential of one's being.

Abilities:

  • Spiritual energy manipulation – Spiritual energy is an inner force that is tied to the soul. Unconstrained by material laws, it governs the purity of one's willpower and vitality.

  • Psychic energy manipulation – Psychic energy arises from the mind and its connection to abstract thought, emotion, and mental perception. Like spiritual energy, it operates outside conventional physical law.

  • Physical energy manipulation – Physical energy is the raw force inherent in matter, motion, and the fabric of space-time. Physical energy is split into 3 sections, positive, negative, and neutral. Positive is associated with entropy, matter, and spacetime. Negative is associated with anti-entropy, anti-matter, and anti-spacetime. Neutral is associated with null-entropy, null-matter, and null-spacetime.

  • Magic – Magic is the manipulation of spiritual and psychic energy to perform supernatural acts. Like both energy types, magic does not follow logicality within the material world. Its strength lies in its impossibility such as taking flight and shaping matter through sheer will and belief.

  • Life force manipulation – A composite energy born from utilizing both physical and spiritual energy, Life force is the sustaining flame of living beings. It enables healing, enhancement of physical attributes, pseudo-immortality, and even defiance of natural death through resurrection.

  • Will energy manipulation – Will is the primal and sovereign energy from which all other energies derive. It is directly tied to the Record, and is the only force capable of interacting with or altering a Record.

  • Adaptive Regeneration – A natural product of Azrael’s Hivean physiology, enhanced by battle-hardened survival. This regeneration operates at the biological and energetic level, enabling him to rapidly repair tissue, seal wounds, and regrow lost limbs. The process is reactive, adapting to the nature of the injury over time, and can develop resistances to specific forms of harm after repeated exposure. Severe trauma such as organ destruction or vaporization can be reversed within moments, while lesser injuries vanish almost instantaneously.

  • Record Regeneration – A transcendent restoration ability granted by Azrael’s mastery over Will and Authority. Where adaptive regeneration repairs the vessel, regeneration from the Record restores the body, mind, and soul, and history of one's being within reality. Due to this, it is impossible to permanently kill him without directly influencing his Record.

  • Flight – Achieved through controlled use of spiritual, psychic, magical, and will energy. Can manifest as levitation, high-speed aerial movement, or full omni-directional combat mobility.

Skills:

  • Etheric Transmogrification – A fusion technique based on the Law of Equivalent Exchange, binding objects, energies, or beings together momentarily depending on the fusion parameters.

  • Anti-Phantasm – A barrier technique designed to weaken or nullify anomalous attacks, with effectiveness scaling to both the barrier’s strength and the potency of the incoming attack.

  • Authority – A refined application of Will energy manipulation, Authority allows the user to impose their original truth, their Record, onto reality. This extends to even the Authority of opposing Authority users, though it is all dependent on if the user has the proper power to do so.

  • Stasis – A specialized Authority technique creating a hybrid field-barrier that freezes actions in their transitional state, preventing them from ever reaching completion.

  • Spatial Convergence & Divergence – Space manipulation skills learned under Zhaor. Enables Azrael to fire compressed-space orbs, shift attack trajectories, teleport, and create spatial explosions.

  • Temporal Convergence & Divergence – Time manipulation counterpart to the spatial techniques. Allows limited time-teleportation and creation of temporal clones through time compression.

  • Split Atmos Flare – Close-range plasma technique that infuses Azrael’s limbs with converted atmospheric energy, enhancing strikes with destructive, electric-like force.

  • Stormfire Prism – Long-range plasma technique firing concentrated, fire-like plasma bolts toward enemies.

  • Crimson Knights of Othair – Dark Arts summoning spell that manifests flame-forged soldiers wielding various weapons and forms.

  • Echo Blight – Subtle illusionary “virus” that corrupts the target’s mind over time, granting Azrael control over their perception, emotions, intentions, and memories. It can also be deliberately implanted into allies as a protective failsafe, automatically activating when it detects nefarious or malicious intent directed at them, countering the aggressor through illusion and mental disruption.

  • Mindflux Creation – Shaping the inner mental landscape into a controllable realm where Azrael dictates reality’s rules, time flow, and spatial forms.

  • Absorption – Ability to assimilate energy, abilities, and even Records into himself. Grants him access to the powers of absorbed entities such as Aegissus, the Blade of Severance, and Sallorax without having to summon them to hand.

  • Hollow Nine – Barrier technique that inverts energy, reducing anything within to absolute zero — including spacetime flow.

  • Hollow Nine Mk. 2 – Authority-enhanced version targeting the world itself, enforcing the Zero-Energy rule upon all within its range.

Weapons:

  • The Blade of Severance – Ethereal, falcata-shaped sword gifted by Iyla Edhixhu. Severs bonds between energies, contracts, Laws, and Records.

  • The Black Blade of Cessation – Formerly wielded by Vulen, Arbiter of Death. Binds those cut by it to inevitable death through the Law of Cessation.

Summons:

  • Aegissus, the Cogwheel of Light – Shield-spirit granting stacking resistance and eventual immunity to repeated attacks.

  • Sallorax, The Grand Malevolent Spirit – Draconic salamander with magma breath; strengthens by consuming earth elements.
