Azazel belongs to a group of ancient mutants known as the Neyaphem, whose demonic appearance and supernatural abilities served as the historical basis for human myths regarding devils and demons. Eons ago, his people engaged in a genocidal conflict against the Cheyarafim, a rival faction of mutants with angelic features who ultimately triumphed and banished the Neyaphem to the Brimstone Dimension. Following his defeat, Azazel became the absolute ruler of this desolate realm, but he found himself trapped by a dimensional barrier that prevents his permanent return to the mortal plane. He has spent millennia stewing in his hatred, manipulating human history from the shadows to orchestrate his eventual escape and the destruction of his ancestral enemies.

To circumvent his exile, Azazel devised a cold and calculated plan to father numerous children across the globe, intending to use their combined genetic potential as a biological bridge to pull him out of his prison. He made brief excursions to Earth to sire these offspring, targeting women with specific genetic traits—most notably the shapeshifter Mystique, which resulted in the birth of Nightcrawler. This grand design was intended to culminate in a ritual where his many children would be sacrificed or utilized as anchors to tear open the gates between dimensions. Though his attempts have been consistently thwarted by the X-Men, Azazel remains a patient and immortal threat, viewing the lives of his descendants as mere fuel for his inevitable return to power.

Appearance: Azazel has red skin. He has a slender and athletic build. He has glowing yellow eyes. He has a black goatee and a black mustache. His black hair is short and slicked back. He has sharply pointed ears. A long red tail with a pointed, spade-shaped tip extends from his back. He wears a black suit jacket over a red, open-collared shirt. He wears black pants and black dress shoes.

Personality: Azazel is a cold and profoundly arrogant ancient mutant who leads the Neyaphem, a group of demonic-looking mutants from biblical times. He possesses a massive messianic complex, firmly believing that his long life and supernatural abilities are the true source of human myths regarding Satan and various demons. He is a master strategist who views time in centuries rather than years, operating with a ruthless, calculating mindset where every individual is merely a pawn. His primary motivation is his escape from the Brimstone Dimension, and he will commit any atrocity or sacrifice any subordinate to ensure his return to Earth as its absolute ruler.

His relationships are almost entirely transactional and exploitative, characterized by a complete lack of genuine paternal or romantic affection. He famously seduced Mystique as part of a grand design to sire a child with teleportation powers, leading to the birth of Nightcrawler (Kurt Wagner). Azazel views Kurt and his other children—such as Abyss and Kiwi Black—not as family, but as biological anchors intended to facilitate his dimensional crossing. This focus on bloodlines often brings him into direct conflict with the X-Men, while his ancient hatred for the angel-like Cheyarafim continues to drive his genocidal ambitions against any who resemble his ancestral enemies.

Azazel's a lethally versatile mutant whose primary strength lies in his status as the world's most powerful teleporter. His mastery over spacetime allows him to freeze objects in place while his supernatural longevity and agility make him a nearly untouchable swordsman. Beyond his physical prehensile tail and paralyzing energy bolts, he's a practitioner of dark magic capable of soul collection and subtle mind manipulation over his own children. He can mask his demonic features to blend into human society, yet he's ultimately vulnerable to the blood of the Cheyarafim, which acts as a literal poison to his Neyaphem physiology.
