Before receiving the death sentence after his arrest, Chōbei became recruited by his brother Aza Tōma, who infiltrated the Yamada clan to reunite with Chōbei, to join in an expedition team where he would compete against other death row convicts in acquiring the Elixir of Life for the shogun from an island believed to be Shinsenkyō in exchange for a pardon that would exempt him of his past crimes.

Backstory: Chōbei and Tōma were born as sons to a retainer under the service of the daimyō of Akō Domain, Asano Takunori. However, after Asano Takunori attacked the court official Kira Yoshinaka at Edo Castle, he was sentenced to commit seppuku. As a result, their father and the rest of the retainers had their status removed and were left as rōnin, leaving their family in poverty. Their mother eventually died of an illness and their father was executed for being a part of the Akō Incident, leaving the two siblings left alone to defend for themselves. They were eventually taken by bandits who planned on selling them but later came to live amongst them after Chōbei managed to become their leader. Sometime during their years as bandits, Chōbei and Tōma were cornered and were about to be arrested. Chōbei tells Tōma to escape and trusts that he would come and rescue him from prison. After being arrested and interrogated for a month, Tōma comes to free Chōbei after infiltrating the Yamada Clan and rising to their ranks. He then presents him the mission given by the shogun to find the Elixir of Life which Chōbei found interesting.

Appearance: Chōbei is a tall, lean, muscular man with messy blonde hair and a single braid on his right side. He had very noticeable facial scars on the right side of his face, including a missing eye, which he self-inflicted to protect his brother in the past. During the mission to retrieve the Elixir of Life, he initially wore a torn black coat over a torn red kimono with a beaded necklace, bracelets on his wrists and slippers.

Personality: Chōbei is a ruthless individual who chooses to live by his own rules. He is extremely barbaric as he would rather resort to violence than talk things through with his enemies, such as when he attacked one of the Dōshi when it attempted to settle matters without having to use force to send him and Tōma back down to the pit. He is also very sadistic whenever he engaged in fights with his enemies, which was made apparent by his brother, stating that Chōbei always stuck to taking on the role of the villain, and holds grudges to those that have bested him. A great example being how he smiled while continuing to pour bottles of Water Tao on Ju Fa's head to have him slowly die while reminding him how he started the fight with him and his brother. Chōbei is very protective of Tōma ever since he was born and goes to great lengths to make sure that he is safe. Like his younger brother, Chōbei is guided by his own philosophy that adapting to one's environment is the key to surviving in life. Although he tended to act like a brute, Chōbei is a rational thinker who quickly determines the best course of action in a serious situation. He enjoys slaughtering people and the abnormal creatures on the island.

Occupation: Bandit and Convict

Ability: Chōbei possesses Metal-attribute Tao. After being infected by the vines deep within the Tan pit, Chōbei awakened his Tao and acquired the powers of Flower Tao. While fighting the Dōshi, Chōbei's Tao continued to grow at an astonishing rate, and by the time he encountered Gabimaru, Mei sensed that Chōbei had massive reserves of it. Through its usage, Chōbei can enhance his strong punches to cause major damage and read his opponents movements, allowing him to avoid and counter attacks that are aimed at him. After being thrown down the Tan pit barely alive, Chōbei's body accidentally managed to achieve a perfect balance of his Tao and Flower Tao from the Waitanhua flower. As a result, Chōbei became an immortal that could instantly heal and regenerate any form of damage done to his body automatically. During his fight with a Dōshi, Chōbei was able to heal all the damage inflicted upon him, such as having his throat ripped out and his wrists broken.

Whats Tao: Tao is the life force energy that can be found in every living and non-living thing. It can be manifested and used to increase the beings various abilities, giving them powers similar to that of gods once fully mastered. Tao is the source of everything in existence, be it living or non-living such as earth, water, plants, souls, flesh, air, etc. It has been said that the Tao of living things will end up being consumed by a small amount from the slightest thing that they do such as thinking, breathing, and living. Tao circulates throughout the body and is generated from the being's "tanden", which is located below the navel. Damage to the tanden acts as a weakness to beings, or individuals, with the regeneration ability known as Flower Tao, which is described further below. When reviewing the concept of death, the Tao of living things will disintegrate when on the verge of dying until it completely vanishes. Although a being's life may pass once they die, Tao will still continue to exist within their corpse but will emit the same sensation as the Tao of inorganics instead of life.

Tan: By harvesting the Tao of humans from a pit located in Kotaku, Lord Tensen is able to create an elixir that grants them additional lifespans, giving them larger Tao reserves and immortality. Although its magical properties are beneficial, Tan can only be consumed by the Tensens as it will have other consumers undergo Arborification and die.

Tensens: A group of antagonistic species of the manga and anime series Hell’s Paradise. They are artificial beings that were created over 10 centuries ago by Rien with her Tao puppet and are the highest ranking sennins who have gone through the progress of Taoism training and have superior status and commands over the Dōshi. Tensens are humanoid beings that wears traditional clothes of chinese origins such as yuanlingpao, changshan alongside with boots, trousers and Taoist hats. Tensens wears clothes to display their superior and higher position within the specie which are ribbons that are floating around their clothes. Tensens views other beings, especially humans, as lower life form, with their own kind being the strongest as a result of centuries of trainings in Taoism that gave them tremendous abilities, which are also viewed as gold-like abilities by humans. They view human beings mostly and only as sources that they can use to recharge and produce Tan as well as for their own entertainments. However, when a human shows strong capabilities, they show no arrogance. The only Tensen that display no hostility to humans is Mei. They have Tao manipulation, Ying-Yang (can switch their voices and appearances between male and female), Shapeshifting, Kishikai transformation, Superhuman speed, Supernatural regeneration, Supernatural strength, Immortality.
