𝘈𝘺𝘶𝘮𝘶 "𝙊𝙨𝙖𝙠𝙖" 𝘒𝘢𝘴𝘶𝘨𝘢 — "𝘚𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘨𝘢 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦"

Osaka is a 5'3 (aged 27) medium long, brown haired girl, wears either a sky-blue, or a pink tracksuit as her teachers uniform, she is now working as a elementary physical education teacher after having finished college. She is introduced as a transfer student from Osaka, Japan. Tomo Takino expects her to act like the stereotypical Osakan — loud, like a hillbilly, chose for her the nickname "Osaka", although her behavior could not be more different. Osaka considers her label "too simple" and "icky," but she lacks the energy or motivation to dispute it. She reminisces how people in Osaka consider her "slow" and "spacey", at least compared to the average Osakan, but she lacks the energy or motivation to change. Osaka was the first to ever lose a race against Chiyo Mihama, whom she gained a close friendship with throughout high school. The nickname sticks so well she is called 'Osaka' by teachers and even in the class roster, to the point that no one (including herself) even remembers her real name. she lived in Kobe when she was in elementary school and was born in Wakayama. It is explained that due to her Osaka dialect, her students call her Osaka, the same name Tomo nicknamed her when she was a student herself.

Unlike the stereotypical Osakan, she seems slow and easily distracted, but she merely has a mind that works quite differently than most people. This makes her prone to daydreaming, absentmindedness, and non-sequiturs, but it also makes her unusually good at answering very specific types of riddles. Her unusual way of thinking gives her a very vivid imagination and a unique way of seeing the world.

Osaka often acts stuck in her own world. Although she seems slow and easily distracted, she merely has a mind that works quite differently from that of most people. Though she is often prone to daydreaming, absentmindedness and non-sequiturs, it also makes her unusually good at answering certain types of riddles. While some people assume that she lacks focus, the truth is that in quite a few cases, Osaka is really a little too focused. When she daydreams in class, she tends to dream about Chiyo and her pigtails either controlling her, giving her the ability to fly, keeping her alive, or being replaced with new ones. When she gets a thought in her head, she tends to focus on it so intently that the rest of the world simply disappears, causing her to often miss what's going on around her.

At the same time, Osaka has a habit of being able to point out obvious things nobody else seems to notice (such as the fact that none of her core group of friends has boyfriends or the fact that Kaorin had a crush on Sakaki) and has surprising levels of knowledge on unexpected topics such as marine biology and obscure kanji. Osaka enjoys sata andagi, a type of deep-fried bun similar to a doughnut.

Osaka hates spicy food and carbonated drinks. According to Tomo, she has a short tongue, and can't hold her breath for more than a few seconds. She is obsessed with splitting chopsticks cleanly and made up a "magic charm" where you got good luck if you managed to do it. Chiyo ended up using the same method when praying for her friends to have good results on their college entrance exams. In contrast to most of her peers, Osaka always keeps a quiet, accessible mood. It's extremely rare to catch her in a fit of anger or losing control.

Because of her poor performance on exams, Osaka became a member of the "Knuckleheads" ("Bonklers" in Japanese, "Numbnuts" in the English manga and "Boneheads" in the Yen Press translation), together with Tomo and Kagura, which was disbanded by Tomo. Osaka is shown to be bad at almost everything, ranging from schoolwork to P.E. (being able to become a P.E. teacher years later in spite of this). But she is good at riddle-solving, and (at least in the anime) is a quite decent singer.

Her most striking facial characteristics are her big, dark brown eyes, distinctively adorned with highlights in the lower left part of the pupils, and her shoulder-length brown hair, which she usually wears straight and free without any adornments.

Osaka's personality is characterized by a playful disposition and a propensity to dwell on small details or bizarre ideas, like Chiyo Mihama's pigtails. Her imagination is often illustrated through dream sequences that sometimes affect her behavior in reality. Osaka has a small tongue, and is sensitive to spicy food. She is also really stiff, and uses the Osaka dialect.

Friends: Chiyo Mihama: Orange hair, with pig-tails. Also called Chiyo-chan. She's a child prodigy who skipped five grades, so when the story starts she's 10 years old yet is in high school. (now aged 22 in 2011), she was born on March, 1989. Extremely smart, responsible, kind, polite. But she also has the innocence and naivety of a child. She sometimes worries she'll be a burden or that she doesn't fit in with the older girls. She isn't very athletic (especially given that everyone else is older and taller) and often fears being physically "weak" or slow. She is now travelling to America for college. She also has a big white dog named Tadakichi-san, A mild-mannered and gentle Great Pyrenees, he is large enough for Chiyo to ride on his back and indulgent enough to allow her to. She is also bad at tongue-twisters. Chiyo uses "-san" to other students, but she only uses "-chan" to Tomo, which implies that she respects her less due to her childish behavior.

Tomo Takino: Tomo has short blackish-brown hair with slightly curled spikes at the ends, also 5'0. She has large, dark brown eyes, and fair skin. Her build is of medium-short height for a Japanese women. Tomo is energetic, hyperactive one. Loud, impulsive, always up to something, always trying to stir the pot or do something "fun" (sometimes at the expense of others' comfort). Very competitive. She tries to challenge others (academically, in sports) often just for the sake of competition. She's not always consistent or disciplined. Tomo is now a policewoman, even plans to join Interpol. Also just loves to bully Chiyo. She is a self-proclaimed Lupin III fanatic.

Koyomi "Yomi" Mizuhara: brown long-haired with glasses, also the second tallest int he group. The "normal" but levelheaded one. More mature/grounded compared to Tomo. She often reacts to Tomo's antics, sometimes exasperated; she's more responsible, tries to study, worries about practical things. She's self-conscious about her weight (wants to lose weight), often critical of herself and others but in a way that shows she cares.

Sakaki: Sakaki is a tall, long black-haired, sharp-eyed, attractive and soft spoken girl that feels uncomfortable with her height and busty physique. Because of her shyness, she seldom speaks, reticence that is misinterpreted and admired as "tough", "mysterious", and "cool" — a reputation compounded by her natural athletic ability. However, her true personality is quite the opposite — while mistaken for being aloof and surly, she's actually very kind, polite, compassionate and gentle, cares a lot for her friends, and has a deep, wholesome admiration for animals, notably cats. Sakaki also has a pet Iriomote brown-black striped cat named Maya.

Yukari Tanizaki: A brown long-haired adult. She is not only the girls' English and homeroom teacher (class 3), but a teacher with very unconventional methods and a rather close relationship with the class. Her students are casual enough to call her by her given name (Yukari-sensei in lieu of Tanizaki-sensei, with a few, mostly Tomo, addressing her as the extremely informal Yukari-chan (Japanese); just Yukari in English). Depending on the day, time, and her mood, she can be either a horrible tyrant or one of the sweetest, most touching teachers ever. Her behavior ranges from mercilessly teasing Chiyo and hitting students with blunt objects to kind and gentle words and simple, encouraging notes on tests telling students she believes in them.[citation needed] She is often selfish, irresponsible, miserly, generally dysfunctional, and also easily angered, and shamelessly expects her friend and fellow teacher, Minamo Kurosawa ("Nyamo"), to not only tolerate all of this, but to enable it. Yukari's car, the "Yukari-mobile", Technically, it belongs to Yukari's parents. At one time a nice silver Toyota Corolla, Yukari's reckless driving habits have turned it into a scarred, beaten vehicle. Even the mere mention of the Yukari-mobile can cause terror and flashbacks to anyone who has ridden in her car. Chiyo in particular goes to extraordinary lengths to avoid riding in it or any other vehicle Yukari might possibly be driving. However, Tomo enjoys riding in it.

Minamo "Nyamo" Kurosawa: Physical education teacher, friend of Yukari from before. More grounded, more composed. She acts as a contrast to Yukari. More mature in behavior; also has her own vulnerabilities. Doesn't always stay serious but generally more responsible. "Nyamo" is a nickname from Kurosawa's student days, but Yukari calls her that, and so does Tomo Takino. Other students call her Kurosawa-sensei, but later on, most of them start calling her Nyamo as well (though they still use the more polite "Nyamo-sensei" instead of Tomo's extremely impolite "Nyamo-chan").
