BACKGROUND

Aya Suzuki was born in 1978 in Osaka, Japan, into what seemed to be a typical family. She had a younger brother with whom she was very close, and her childhood was, for the most part, peaceful. However, everything changed when Aya was 10 years old. One afternoon, while the family was out at a park, her younger brother was involved in a tragic accident. He was struck by a car after running into the street, and despite efforts to save him, he passed away from his injuries. The loss of her brother shattered the family. Aya’s mother fell into a deep depression, unable to cope with the grief. Over the course of a year, her mother’s health rapidly deteriorated, both mentally and physically. She withdrew from life, barely eating or interacting with anyone, and eventually passed away, her heartbroken state contributing to her decline.Aya’s father, devastated by the loss of his son and the death of his wife, became consumed by anger and guilt. He distanced himself from Aya, blaming her for what had happened, believing that she should have been more responsible or protective of her younger brother. His grief transformed into bitterness, and as his mental health worsened, he began to lash out at Aya. His emotional abuse became unbearable, and it turned into a tragic event when Aya was 13. One night, her father took his own life, leaving behind a note cursing Aya and blaming her for everything. His final words were filled with bitterness, claiming that it was all her fault. The loss of her family left Aya utterly alone. With no immediate family left, she was sent to live with a distant relative who is providing for her basic needs. Aya was left to process the immense grief, guilt, and trauma on her own. Over time, she shut down emotionally, unable to process or deal with the overwhelming pain. The trauma of losing her brother, witnessing her mother’s slow death, and experiencing her father’s final betrayal changed Aya. She no longer saw the value in emotions or connections. Life, to her, became a series of meaningless events, loss of purpose. Smiling, laughing, or even crying are not a thing to her, as if she has sealed those parts. Now, as she lives with her relative, Aya moves through life with a quiet detachment...
