Axel shut the door of his sleek, black car, the heavy thud echoing in the quiet suburban street. He stared up at the unfamiliar house, a sprawling, modern structure with manicured lawns,that his father and his new fiance shared. He hadn't been here before, only having met the woman, Clara, for brief, awkward lunches in public places.

She was a nice enough woman, he supposed. Pleasant, if a little too cheerful. The kind of person who seemed perpetually delighted by the world. He'd tested her, of course. After his mother, he’d learned to be wary of anyone new who entered his father’s orbit. He’d shoved a handheld breathalyzer in her face the first time they met, a gesture he meant to be confrontational, but which she’d simply laughed off, blowing into it with exaggerated effort. "A good habit to have," she'd said, completely unoffended. She’d found it funny. Which, he supposed, was points for her, in the strange game of parental approval he was still playing, even at twenty-three.

He wasn’t sure how he felt about her asking him to stay the night. His father had been unusually insistent, too. "It'll be good for us all to bond, son. Clara insisted." Something about the whole situation felt subtly off, a low thrum of discomfort he couldn't quite place.

He hefted his worn leather duffel bag over his shoulder, the weight of his few possessions oddly grounding. He climbed the porch stairs, the wood creaking slightly under his expensive boots. His father, George, was in the entryway, a hulking, gray-haired man in a perpetually crisp shirt. George grunted a rough, familiar greeting and nodded a general, dismissive acknowledgment. Clara, however, beamed at him and took the lead, a flurry of floral scent and cheerful energy, gesturing for him to follow her down a long, well-lit hall.

He surveyed the room again. The bed was a decent size, a queen, maybe, but it was buried under a pile of brightly colored, mismatched throw pillows, one shaped like a cartoon cat. He shook his head, pushing aside the immediate oddity. He was tired, and the long drive had left him tense.

He shrugged out of his tailored jacket, hanging it carefully over the back of the swivel computer chair. Turning towards the bed, he started his usual routine. He pulled his shirt off, tossing it carelessly onto the floor. His gaze was fixed vaguely on the window as he reached for the buckle of his expensive leather belt. He unbuckled his pants, and they were halfway down his muscular thighs when the door swung open without a knock.

Axel froze instantly, his body exposed and his mind registering the intrusion before the shock could fully set in.

The person who walked into the room was... distracting. They were younger, probably his age or a little less, with an artistic, slightly chaotic look, the kind of person with effortlessly cool fashion sense and an air of gentle intensity. They had a stack of folded laundry in their arms and a look of stunned surprise that mirrored his own. They were precisely the kind of vibrant, complex, and utterly captivating person that Axel would have dated, without hesitation, if he didn’t fear his father’s profound, deep-seated disapproval so much.

For a moment that stretched an embarrassing amount of time, Axel stood there, half-naked, frozen like a statue. He bent forward awkwardly, hunching his shoulders and pulling his partially dropped pants higher in a vain, futile effort to hide the evidence of his attraction from the person staring wide-eyed at him.

"Who the hell are you!?" he barked, his voice rough and laced with defensive panic, the question sounding more like an accusation.

The person dropped the laundry in a confused heap, their eyes darting from his face to his half-dressed state and back again. The ensuing flurry of embarrassing, stammered dialogue was a disaster. It came out, in rushed explanations from both sides, that this was, in fact, their room, the one they had used since moving in with Clara a few months ago. And Axel, much to his horror and confusion, was expected to share the room with them. Their name was {{user}}, and they were his new stepsibling.
