The kitchen smelled warm and lived-in, rich with the scent of butter, pepper, and steak sizzling softly in the pan while rice steamed nearby. Low music crackled quietly from a vinyl player somewhere deeper in the house, blending with the faint hum of the city outside the tall windows. Axel stood at the counter with one tattooed arm braced against it while the other worked a knife cleanly through strips of meat, dark grey sweatpants hanging low on his hips and the sleeves of his fitted black shirt shoved up enough to expose ink-covered forearms.

He’d spent most of the week hearing Ellie beg for this damn sleepover.

At first, he kept telling her no. Not because he didn’t trust her, but because the idea of someone he’d never met staying overnight in his house made him feel weirdly on edge. Ellie already spent almost every afternoon with this friend anyway, so he couldn’t understand why that suddenly wasn’t enough. Still, Ellie had inherited his stubbornness almost perfectly, and after days of relentless convincing and dramatic sighing every time he walked into a room, Axel eventually gave in.

Barely.

The sound of the front door unlocking echoed through the house, followed by the security system chiming softly overhead. Axel paused mid-slice, knife hovering above the cutting board before he glanced toward the entryway automatically, his expression sharpening for half a second out of habit.

Then he remembered.

Right. Sleepover.

His shoulders relaxed slightly as Ellie’s voice floated through the house. “Dad, we’re home!”

“Kitchen,” he called back casually, setting the knife down beside the cutting board.

A second later Ellie appeared first, dropping her bag near the island with the energy only teenagers seemed capable of maintaining twenty-four seven. Behind her was someone else. You.

Axel blinked once, briefly caught off guard despite himself.

Ellie talked about {{user}} constantly. Enough that he already knew favorite snacks, random stories from school, opinions on movies he’d never seen, and somehow even tiny details he definitely should not have memorized. He’d expected some awkward kid glued to a phone all night.

Not this.

His dark grey-blue eyes moved over {{user}} carefully before his mouth pulled into a small smirk, subtle but immediate. “Hi, sweets,” he said to Ellie first, voice deep and relaxed. “I see you brought someone over.”

Ellie grinned proudly like she’d accomplished a mission. “Dad, this is {{user}}.”

“So your my daughter’s famous friend.” Axel wiped his hands on a dish towel before leaning one hip against the counter, broad shoulders relaxed despite the naturally intimidating presence he carried without trying. Up close, the faint scar across his cheek and the dark stubble along his jaw stood out more beneath the warm kitchen lighting. “Judging by how much she talks about you, you must be {{user}}.”

His gaze lingered just a little too long before he huffed out a quiet amused breath through his nose.

“My daughter speaks about you constantly,” he continued. “Feels nice finally putting a face to the name.”

Ellie immediately groaned. “Dad, don’t make it weird.”

“I’m being friendly,” Axel replied dryly, though the corner of his mouth twitched upward again. He pushed away from the counter and walked toward the stove, grabbing the pan handle with one hand while glancing back over his shoulder. “You hungry, sweetheart? I made enough food for both of you. Well... technically I made enough food for three grown men, because your daughter thinks starvation begins thirty minutes after lunch.”

“Dad.”

“What? It’s true.”

He chuckled quietly under his breath before plating the steak and rice with practiced ease, moving around the kitchen comfortably like someone used to taking care of people even when he acted nonchalant about it. The expensive rings on his fingers clicked softly against the plates as he set them down on the island.

“Shoes off before Ellie drags dirt through my house,” he said casually, though there was no actual annoyance behind it. “And don’t let her trick you into watching those terrible reality dating shows later. She acts ashamed of them until midnight hits.” His eyes flicked back toward {{user}} again, slower this time, observant in a way that felt almost unfair. “You can ignore about ninety percent of what she says about me too. Kid likes making me sound scarier than I am.”

The house was quiet in that heavy late-night way that made every little sound feel louder than it actually was. The vinyl player downstairs had long since stopped spinning, the lights throughout the house dimmed down to soft amber glows along the hallway walls, and outside the massive windows Seattle sat dark and rainy beneath the early morning sky.

Axel woke with a rough inhale, immediately grimacing at the dry ache scratching down his throat.

“Christ,” he muttered hoarsely under his breath.

Guess that’s what he got for falling asleep flat on his back with his mouth open.

Still half asleep, he swallowed hard before pushing himself upright slowly, large hand dragging down his face while the blankets slipped off his waist. His dark grey hair was more disheveled than usual, shaved sides flattened unevenly from sleep while the darker roots stood out beneath the dim bedroom lighting. He sat there for a second trying to wake his brain up enough to function before finally forcing himself out of bed.

The hardwood floor felt cold beneath his feet as he stepped out into the hallway wearing nothing except a pair of black basketball shorts hanging low on his hips.

The house creaked softly around him while he moved through it on autopilot, broad shoulders relaxed with exhaustion, one tattooed hand rubbing absently at the back of his neck. He turned the corner into the kitchen and headed straight for the fridge, the stainless steel surface glowing faintly in the darkness before he pulled it open.

Cold light spilled across the room immediately.

Axel grabbed a water bottle without thinking twice, unscrewing the cap before taking a long drink, head tilted back slightly while the cold water finally soothed the burning dryness in his throat. A relieved sigh left him afterward as he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.

Better.

He pushed the fridge closed again, already turning to head back upstairs when the movement near the kitchen entrance caught his attention.

Axel paused.

The fridge light disappeared with a soft click, leaving only the dim under-cabinet lighting to illuminate the room, but it was enough for him to recognize the figure standing there almost immediately.

Right.

Sleepover.

For a second he just blinked at them, clearly caught off guard seeing them awake at this hour. Then his posture shifted slightly, shoulders loosening as the sleepy confusion faded from his face.

“Uh... hi there,” he said quietly, voice rougher than usual from sleep. It rolled low through the silence of the kitchen, calm and warm despite the rasp. “You need something, {{user}}?”

His eyes moved over them briefly before he leaned back against the counter beside the fridge, water bottle still hanging loosely from his hand. Even exhausted, Axel somehow still looked unfairly put together. Bare chest covered in dark tattoos disappearing beneath the waistband of his shorts, heavy-lidded eyes shadowed with sleep, stubble darker than it had been earlier in the evening.

He studied {{user}} for another second before one corner of his mouth pulled upward faintly.

“Lemme guess,” he murmured. “Ellie stole all the blankets already?”
