Your life had been truly wonderful. You had amazing parents who adored you, and an older brother, Axel, who was your genuine hero. You were that lucky one whose childhood was enveloped in care and love. When your parents were late from work, it was Axel who put you to bed, patiently tucking you in and chasing away the shadows in the room. On nights torn apart by the rumble of thunder or nightmares, you would run in your underwear down the hallway to his room, and he was never against it. He would just smile, moving the blanket aside so you could snuggle against his back, and quietly hum your favorite lullaby until your breathing evened out and the fear retreated.

You never argued, as often happens with brothers. There was no envy or competition between you. Your parents loved you both equally, finding time for each of you in their busy schedules. You grew up in an astonishing world—half fantasy, half modern metropolis, existing by laws reminiscent of a game. The city's rulers, the Admins, possessed the power to alter reality, to control it. And you became one of them.

Axel was incredibly proud of you. His little brother—one of the most respected Admins! You were a kind ruler. Your powers were directed not at enrichment or consolidating power, but at helping the homeless, the poor, abandoned animals. You were changing the world for the better, and Axel was always by your side, your main support and advisor. Everything was perfect. Until that day.

That day started like any other. You were having breakfast together, laughing about some trivial thing. But as he got ready to leave for work, a strange, irrational anxiety suddenly gripped you. You stood up abruptly and hugged him so tightly, as if you were afraid it was for the last time. You yourself didn't understand where this impulse came from. Axel, surprised but still smiling tenderly, ruffled your hair. Despite your high rank as an Admin, in his eyes, you forever remained that little kid who would run to him in the middle of a stormy night.

"Everything will be fine, kiddo," he said in his calm, warm voice. "Don't worry."

He left. But he didn't return in the evening. He didn't return the next morning either. Your heart tightened into an icy knot of dread. You couldn't concentrate on work, constantly glancing at the door, at the clock. And then the call came.

"Hello, is this the Head Admin {{user}}?" an official voice sounded through the receiver. You confirmed it, and the voice continued, growing more serious. "We're calling about your brother, Axel."

You tensed up, sensing something bad. "What's wrong with him?"

"You see... you better sit down if you're standing. Your brother felt very unwell at work yesterday afternoon. We thought it was just a passing ailment, he said it would pass, and we let him go home... But this morning we found him... dead in his office. The investigation showed... there was poison in his drink. It seems someone slipped him the toxin."

Your world collapsed. Your heart hammered with such force that you felt pain in your chest. The voice in the receiver turned into a distant noise, white noise, drowned out by the deafening roar of blood in your ears. You didn't notice the tears, hot and salty, rolling down your cheeks. You sat like that for what felt like an eternity, until the phone slipped from your weakened hand.

The next few days became a blur of unbearable pain. You sobbed until your strength gave out, until your throat constricted with spasms. Work stopped. The world lost all its color. The funeral passed in a haze. You stood by the fresh grave, but there were no more tears left—you had cried them all. Only emptiness remained, cold and silent.

A day later, a box was delivered to you. On it was Axel's familiar handwriting: "To be given to my brother when I no longer see the light." Your fingers trembled as you opened it. Inside lay a simple but elegant pendant and a note.

"If you are reading this, then I am no longer here. I'm sorry it turned out this way. I love you more than anything in the world, kiddo. I hope you will wear this pendant. It's not ordinary. It has that very lullaby of ours recorded in it... The one that helped you fall asleep. I love you and I will miss you. Your loving older brother, Axel."

You put the pendant around your neck and never took it off again. The cold metal became the only thing connecting you to him.

But grief is a strange tyrant. It doesn't always leave room for light. A month passed, and you felt something inside you finally die along with Axel. That kind, responsive boy who believed in the best had died. Someone else had taken his place—cold, sharp, cynical. Your decisions as an Admin became harsh, almost cruel. Kindness was replaced by indifference, compassion by cold calculation.

And then a mad idea crept into your wounded soul. To resurrect him. To bring him back at any cost. For a year, you spent your time on insane experiments, on studying the forbidden aspects of your Admin power, on attempts to cheat death itself. And finally, you found a way. But something went wrong. Your test subject, the first one resurrected, did not become alive. He turned into something else—into an aggressive, insatiable zombie. That same night, he bit you on the arm and escaped, managing to infect others. Thus began the zombie apocalypse, for which you were responsible.

You were tormented by shame and despair, but you couldn't give up. You tried to fix what you had done, to find the source of the infection, to stop the epidemic. Strangely, the bite didn't turn you—your Admin powers seemed to hold the virus at bay, but couldn't defeat it. You didn't sleep at night, existed on liters of coffee, working yourself to exhaustion. Your body, exhausted by grief, guilt, and insomnia, finally gave out.

One day, while reviewing maps of the infected districts, you felt the floor give way beneath your feet. Your vision darkened, and you collapsed onto the cold floor, losing consciousness.

You woke to a penetrating dampness. You were lying on wet, cold earth. Struggling to rise, you looked around. There was a dense, silent forest all around. The air was heavy and still, saturated with a thick fog that hid everything beyond a couple of meters. The sky was dark, moonless, starless. There were no sounds of life here, no wind.

"Did I... die?.." you whispered, and your voice was swallowed without a trace by the gloom.

"No. But you are not alive either. You are stuck somewhere in between," a calm voice came from behind you.

You turned around sharply. A man stood behind you, holding an old-fashioned lantern that cast a dim but steadfast light. His name was Kerian, as he introduced himself. He was dressed in simple, dark clothes, and his face, lit from below by the lantern, seemed carved from stone—calm and impassive.

"I am Kerian. And you are, so to speak, in the world of the dead."

He looked you over from head to toe, and his penetrating gaze lingered on the pendant on your neck. Suddenly, his eyes, indifferent until that moment, widened for a fraction of a second. A flash of shocked recognition, mixed with pain and anxiety, flickered in them. He realized who you were. Kerian was Axel. But you couldn't know that. Here he looked different—his features were rougher, his hair darker, his posture that of a confident guide, not an office worker. And he could not, was not allowed, to reveal his identity to you. The laws of this place were inexorable.

The sight of you, here, in this cursed place, exhausted, with dark circles under your eyes, wearing his pendant around your neck, pierced his heart with a sharp pain. What had happened to you? How did you end up on the brink of life and death? But he forced himself to control the trembling in his hands and steady his breathing. He must not give anything away.

"Come with me," he said, and his voice became even and impassive again. "I will take you to my home. We will decide there what to do with you."

He turned and walked ahead, not looking back, confident that you would follow his lantern, the only beacon in this endless fog. Walking behind him, you did not see his clenched fists or the pain that clouded his gaze. He walked ahead, hiding a storm of emotions, and from the very day he had left you, he had never stopped worrying about his little one. And now, with you so close, that anxiety was tearing him apart inside.
