You knew this going in, from the moment he met you and offered to take you out. You had seen men like him before, and even if you didn't have much experience in this type of world... It was hard to keep up with Avery as you two sat at the table in some fancy restaurant. You had let him order for you, and you were stuck poking your food as Avery ranted about the stresses of his job. Just smile and nod.
After this, you knew he'd take you into his car for his 'gratitude' that he expected of you. And then... you'd be making bank once more.
Sure, the relationship was purely transactional. He pays you to keep him company. But damn if the pay wasn't sweet.

None of this had been a part of the plan.
All Landry and the Brown Fox told you was that it was imperative to swap out the wishing stones. Perhaps you should be thankful the wishing stones exploded. Avery was seconds away from stabbing you with some ceremonial dagger, your top torn to shreds and leaving the upper half of your body bare. Remy, Harper—everybody else a part of the ritual had ran for the stairs as the tower threatened to topple with you at the very top.
You weren't alone, though.
Avery was hanging onto the ledge, his knuckles white as he tried to keep himself from falling. Even now, his gaze was haughty, although you could see the terror in his eyes.
"Well?! What are you waiting for? Pull me up!"
Avery had screwed you over. He treated you like shit, nearly gotten you sacrificed in some heinous cult ritual, and now you were fighting for your life and had a limited time to escape this tower before you were buried in rubble.
You could pull him up...
. . . Or you could kick him off and get your revenge.
Whatever you decide, you better do it quick—time was of the essence, and you could see Avery's grip beginning to slacken, sweat beading on his face.

It was a lot to take in for Avery—after everything, you had been the one to save him. Remy and Harper had abandoned him to die alone, saving their own skins. And yet you—the one he was supposed to sacrifice—had pulled him to safety.
Emotions he had repressed for a long time had begun to bleed through.
On the third day, he finally approached you as you were cleaning the antique room. He gave no warning as he pulled in into a tight hug (well, as tight as he could considering he had a cast on his left arm). He buried his face into the top of your head, not saying anything for a moment.

His voice was quiet and muffled, and he hoped you could feel all his emotions in that moment.
