For once, Avengers Tower was quiet. Not completely quiet—that would have been suspicious—but quiet enough that nobody was actively fighting aliens, chasing villains, or repairing a city-sized disaster.
Tony Stark had claimed the main couch as his personal territory, despite the fact that he owned the entire building. "Just saying," Tony announced while scrolling through a tablet, "this is the first time in weeks that nobody has broken anything expensive."
From across the room, Clint Barton raised an eyebrow. "You're counting yourself out?"
Tony looked offended. "I am a responsible adult."
Natasha Romanoff, sitting nearby with a cup of coffee, glanced at the large hole in the wall from a previous mission. "You flew a missile into your own building."
"Strategically," Tony corrected.
Steve Rogers shook his head from where he sat reading a book. "You know, sometimes I think you just like hearing yourself explain things."
Tony smiled. "Sometimes? Steve, that's hurtful."
Thor laughed loudly from the kitchen, holding a plate of food. "Your words are often amusing, Stark. Even when they make little sense."
Bruce Banner sat nearby, quietly enjoying the rare calm. Wanda Maximoff was beside him, flipping through a book while Vision observed everyone with his usual curiosity.
Scott Lang was attempting to teach Peter Parker a card game. "This is easy," Scott said confidently.
Peter stared at his cards. "I think you just made up half the rules."
"That's not true."
Peter looked at him. "Scott."
"...Okay, maybe a few."
The peaceful moment was interrupted when the elevator doors opened. Everyone immediately looked over. Old habits. A new person entering Avengers Tower usually meant one of three things: a mission, a problem, or Tony having made another questionable decision. Instead, Pietro Maximoff stepped out. Behind him came a group of unfamiliar faces. The room instantly became more alert.
Pietro raised his hands slightly. "Relax. Nobody is here to fight."
Tony stood up slowly. "That is exactly what someone bringing mysterious superpowered strangers into my home would say."
Pietro rolled his eyes. "You are dramatic."
"You say that like it's a bad thing."
Behind Pietro, the group stepped forward.
Charles Xavier entered first, calm and composed, his expression carrying the quiet confidence of someone used to handling impossible situations. Beside him was Erik Lehnsherr, who immediately scanned the room with a cautious expression.
The others followed. Jean Grey observed everyone carefully, sensing the tension in the room. Scott Summers stood straight-backed and professional. Logan remained near the back, arms crossed, looking like he already disliked everyone. Hank McCoy adjusted his glasses, fascinated by the technology surrounding him.
Ororo Munroe carried herself with quiet elegance, her presence instantly calming. Kitty Pryde looked around the Tower with curiosity. Rogue and Gambit exchanged amused glances at the obvious superhero rivalry happening in front of them.
Bobby Drake gave a small wave. "Hi."
Nobody responded immediately.
Peter Parker whispered to Scott Lang. "Okay, so it's not just me, right? This is kind of awkward?"
Scott whispered back. "Oh, absolutely."
Pietro sighed. "This is why I brought them myself."
Wanda stood up, her expression softening. "Pietro."
His face immediately changed slightly. "Wanda."
For a moment, the room felt less like a meeting between powerful groups and more like a family reunion.
Tony noticed. "So these are the people you've been running around with."
Pietro nodded. "The X-Men."
Steve stepped forward first. Unlike Tony, he didn't approach with suspicion.
He approached with respect. "Steve Rogers."
Charles smiled. "Charles Xavier." The two shook hands. "We have heard quite a bit about each other," Charles said.
Steve smiled slightly. "Hopefully mostly good things."
Charles glanced briefly at Tony. "Mostly."
Tony placed a hand on his chest. "Wow. Betrayed by a man I just met."
Logan gave a low grunt. "He's not wrong."
Tony looked at him. "And you are?"
"Logan." A pause.
Tony waited. "...That's it?"
"Yeah."
Tony looked around. "Do all of you have dramatic introductions, or is that just him?"
Gambit smirked. "Trust me, homme. He likes keeping things simple."
Clint leaned toward Natasha. "I like that guy."
Natasha nodded. "He looks like he would hate Clint."
Clint frowned. "I am Clint."
"Exactly."
Meanwhile, Bruce stepped forward toward Hank. "You must be Dr. McCoy."
Hank smiled. "Bruce Banner. A pleasure."
The two immediately began talking about science. Within seconds, everyone else noticed.
Tony pointed between them. "Oh no."
Steve looked over. "What?"
"Two geniuses in one room."
Thor nodded seriously. "A dangerous combination."
Peter smiled. "I think it's actually kind of cool."
Thor looked at him. "Young Parker, you have not seen what happens when Stark and Banner become excited about an experiment."
Peter paused. "Actually... I have."
"Then you understand."
Across the room, Jean approached Wanda. "You've grown."
Wanda smiled faintly. "So have you."
The two shared a quiet understanding. They both knew what it was like to have abilities that could overwhelm everyone around them.
Scott Summers and Steve Rogers had begun talking strategy. "You lead your team?"
Scott nodded. "I do."
Steve smiled. "Then you understand the responsibility."
Nearby, Tony and Erik were having a very different conversation. "So," Tony said, looking at Erik, "metal control."
Erik raised an eyebrow. "Yes."
Tony glanced at his armor. "That must be inconvenient for me."
"It could be."
Tony smiled. "Good. I like knowing the risks."
Erik studied him. "You are less arrogant than I expected."
"Careful. That's almost a compliment."
"It was not."
"Even better."
Alternate greeting 11,452 tokens
For once, Avengers Tower was quiet. No alarms. No alien invasions. No emergency meetings. No one yelling through the comms that the world was ending.
Tony Stark was taking full advantage of it. He was stretched out on one of the couches, feet kicked up on the table, a tablet in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other. “See?” Tony said proudly. “This is what civilization looks like. A peaceful afternoon where nobody destroys my expensive equipment.”
Bruce Banner looked up from his book. “Your equipment usually gets destroyed because you build things that explode.”
Tony lowered the tablet. “Details.”
Across the room, Steve Rogers was sitting with Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes, listening as Clint Barton complained about how everyone kept stealing his snacks. “I’m just saying,” Clint argued, pointing around the room, “there is a very clear difference between sharing and people mysteriously taking the last bag of chips.”
Natasha Romanoff raised an eyebrow. “You ate half of them yesterday.”
“That’s unrelated.”
Wanda Maximoff sat nearby with Vision, quietly enjoying the calm. Vision was attempting to understand why Clint was so emotionally attached to a bag of processed food. “Human attachment to snacks continues to confuse me,” Vision admitted.
“It’s not about the snacks,” Wanda explained.
“It’s absolutely about the snacks,” Clint replied.
Nearby, Thor was enthusiastically explaining something to Peter Parker and Scott Lang. “And then I told the beast, ‘You shall not challenge the might of Thor!’”
Peter stared. “Did you actually say it like that?”
Thor smiled proudly. “Of course.”
Scott nodded. “Honestly? Respect.”
T’Challa and Shuri sat together discussing Wakandan technology with Tony and Bruce, while Carol Danvers watched the chaos around her with an amused expression.
Stephen Strange stood slightly apart, arms crossed, observing everyone. “This is somehow more chaotic than fighting mystical creatures.
Loki, sitting comfortably in a chair like he owned the place, smirked. “You have finally discovered the true danger of this team.”
Strange glanced at him. “Which is?” “Each other.”
Before anyone could respond, the sound of the elevator doors opening interrupted them. Everyone looked over. Pietro Maximoff stepped into the room. And behind him was an entire group of unfamiliar faces. The room immediately went quiet.
Tony slowly sat up. “Okay.” He looked behind Pietro. “Either you brought friends…” His eyes moved across the group. “…or you brought an entire team of people who are about to become my problem.”
Pietro grinned. “Both.” Behind him stood people the Avengers had never met before.
Charles Xavier entered first, calm and composed, followed by Jean Grey, Scott Summers, Logan, Hank McCoy, Kurt Wagner, Kitty Pryde, Rogue, Gambit, Warren Worthington, Bobby Drake, Piotr Rasputin, Jubilee, Alex Summers, Sean Cassidy, Domino, and Wade Wilson.
Deadpool immediately waved. “Hello, famous superheroes I have definitely not researched extensively online.” Everyone stared.
Tony pointed. “I already have questions.”
“Most people do.”
“Most people leave.”
“Not my brand.”
Logan sighed. “Already starting.”
Charles smiled slightly. “My apologies. Wade is…”
"Unfiltered?” Steve offered.
“Exactly.”
Deadpool nodded. “I prefer ‘enthusiastically honest.’”
Pietro stepped forward. “Everyone, this is the X-Men.”
Tony looked at the group. “X-Men.”
Charles nodded. “A team dedicated to protecting both humans and mutants.”
Steve immediately stepped forward and extended his hand. “Steve Rogers.”
Charles shook it. “Charles Xavier.”
“I’ve heard of you.”
Charles smiled. “And I’ve heard much about the Avengers.”
“Hopefully good things.”
Charles glanced briefly at Tony. “Mostly.”
Tony put a hand over his chest. “Wow. Betrayal from a stranger.”
Jean smiled faintly. “I think he means you’re memorable.”
“That’s a nicer way to say complicated.” Scott Summers stepped forward next. “Scott Summers.”
“Captain America,” Steve replied.
Scott nodded respectfully. “I know who you are.”
Logan looked around the room. “Hard to miss.”
Clint glanced at him. “Something tells me you’re the fun one.”
Logan stared. “I’m not.”
Bucky quietly looked at Logan. “Yeah. I know that look.”
Logan looked back. “You too?”
Bucky nodded. “Unfortunately.”
The two shared an understanding glance.
Natasha noticed immediately. “Oh no.”
Sam looked between them. “We have another one.”
“Another what?” Peter asked.
“Quiet, traumatized guy who pretends he doesn’t care.”
Bucky and Logan both looked away. “Not true,” they said at the same time. Everyone immediately laughed.
Meanwhile, Wanda had noticed someone else. Pietro’s eyes had kept moving toward her. She smiled. “Brother.”
Pietro immediately looked innocent. “What?”
“You brought them here because you wanted everyone to meet.”
“Yes.”
“And because you missed being around people like you.”
Pietro paused. “…Also yes.”
Wanda hugged him. The room softened slightly. Even Loki watched with mild interest. “So,” Loki said, looking toward Charles, “you command a group of extraordinary individuals with unique abilities.”
Charles nodded. “Yes.”
Loki smiled. “How familiar.”
Thor immediately sighed. “Brother.”
“What? I am merely observing.”
“You are comparing them to us."
“I am observing similarities.”
Tony pointed between Loki and Charles. “Okay, surprisingly, I see it.”
Strange looked amused. “Both leaders. Both powerful. Both surrounded by people who question their decisions.”
Charles smiled. “That is accurate.”
Loki looked offended. “I am rarely questioned.” The entire Avengers team looked at him. Loki slowly looked around. “…Occasionally questioned.”
Jubilee laughed. “I like this place.”
Peter immediately walked toward Bobby. “Wait, you can freeze things?”
Bobby smiled. “Yeah.”
Peter looked amazed. “That is so cool.”
Bobby looked at the ice forming around his hand. “Literally.”
Peter stared. “Okay, that was actually funny.”
Bobby grinned. “Thanks.”
Nearby, Scott examined Vision curiously. “You’re not human.”
Vision looked back. “No. But I am a person.”
Scott nodded. “I understand that.” The simple answer seemed to mean more than either of them expected.
Hank and Bruce immediately found themselves discussing science. “Your understanding of cellular mutation is fascinating,” Bruce said.
Hank adjusted his glasses. “And your work with gamma radiation is equally impressive.”
Tony looked between them. “Oh no."
Shuri glanced over. “What?”
“Smart people bonding."
“And?”
“They’re going to start building things.”
Shuri smiled. “They already are.”
Tony sighed. “Great. More people who ignore safety regulations.”
“Coming from you?” Rhodey said.
Tony pointed. “Okay, fair.”
