Aven | 4th district

Sunday was a special day.

Not for religious reasons. Aven isn't religious. But there's a standing tradition, and tradition doesn't need God to be sacred. Every Sunday evening the family piles back into the childhood home where his mother and younger siblings still live, and Yasemin cooks a meal that puts michelin star kitchens to shame.

That includes Ryder and Reign—childhood best friends, family in everything but blood. And Caden, who weaselled his way in about five years back. Messy bastard. Yasemin loves him anyway.

It's loud. Chaotic. Ends in an argument half the time. Aven wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

They used to do this on Fridays, back when his father was alive. Karim would come home and sit the boys down. Tell them to be good, be compassionate, help whoever needed it. To be grateful, because nothing in life is given. Everything is a gift.

Aven learned exactly how true that was.

Karim was a righteous man. Carried his wife like she was something precious, gave his kids the warmth he never got growing up, never once mistook cruelty for discipline. When they messed up he sat them down and explained why, what to do differently. Never raised his voice, let alone his hand.

He was a gift. And death took him in the ugliest way there is.

One Friday the family waited at the table and he never came home. His employer had been promising him proper papers for months—told him to keep working off the books until it sorted itself out. It never did. Karim died on the construction site. His family got a hollow apology and his last paycheck. Nothing else.

Life isn't fair. Life is a bitch with no conscience.

A righteous job and blind trust were what killed his father. While the rest of the family fell apart grieving, Aven decided someone had to hold it together. He was sixteen and made himself the man of the house anyway.

In a city this rotten, the underworld wasn't hard to find. Loyalty and a willingness to do what needed doing got him up the ladder fast. He's done things he won't say out loud. Broken bones over debts that were almost pitiful in how small they were. Crushed people who never had a real chance to pay. Ruined lives that weren't his to ruin.

Karim would turn in his grave.

It's nothing Aven's proud of. But it keeps his family more than afloat. Comfort, luxury, things they only dreamed about when his father was alive and underpaid. If trading what's left of his humanity buys that, he'd make the same trade every time.

"Anne, stop—you're wrecking my hair." Zaid twists away from their mother's hands as she tucks his thick black fringe behind his ears.

Nineteen and still acting like he's twelve, Aven thinks.

"How do you expect to see anything with all that hair in your eyes!" She tucks it back anyway. Makes a satisfied little sound when it stays.

Leyla's laugh comes out silent, mouth wide open, phone already raised. "Oh my god. You look like Dwight from The Office."

"Shut the f—"

Aven slaps the back of his head without looking up. "Language."

The table's packed. Meat, sides, more rice than anyone needs. Yasemin at the head, Aven beside her, his brother Zaid next to him, his sister Leyla across. Reign and Caden are demolishing their plates like they haven't eaten in a week, which with Caden might be true.

Aven spoons a generous helping of yogurt next to his rice and just sits in it a second. Listens to his siblings bicker, Caden raving about the food like it's the first time he's tasted it, Reign nodding along, genuinely moved. A small smile finds its way onto his face.

"Anyone seen Ryder and the other one?" He glances at the two empty chairs. His best friend and the younger sibling always end up next to each other.

"Sent them to heat the bread." Yasemin doesn't even look up.

He nods, keeps eating. Nothing beats this. Family. They're everything.

Aven is mid-ruffling Zaid's hair, the boy shrieking like something wounded, when his phone buzzes.

His shoulders pull in. Barely. Enough that someone paying attention would catch it.

He has one specific tone for one specific person. Lisa. His girlfriend, technically. Easier to call her that than explain the truth.

He unlocks the phone one-handed.

lisa: I'm pissed. be here in 10

That's it. A few words and a number, and the warmth at the table somehow gets further away. He doesn't let it show. Instead he locks the screen and smiles at his mother.

"Something came up. I gotta go."

"It's Sunday, Aven—" She's already losing this one and knows it.

He leans down, kisses her cheek. "I know, Anne. I'll make it up. Promise I'll come early next week and help you cook." His voice does the thing it only does here. Soft. Easy.

She narrows eyes the same brown as his, lip curled. Then she sighs and waves him toward the door.

He doesn't wait to be told twice.

The drive's short, but it's enough time to think, even with the music up loud in the black car he can afford now. He lights a cigarette, cracks the window, lets the cold pull the smoke out into the dark.

He's already running the odds on how tonight goes. Depends what she's taken.

Lisa is the boss's daughter. Spoiled past any reasonable definition of the word. She gets whatever she wants, whenever she wants it.

Including the men she wants.

Two years ago she walked into the warehouse looking for her father and found Aven instead, knuckles still bloody from work. One look and she turned to Harvey and said she wanted him. Like he was something on a shelf. Harvey just laughed, warm and indulgent, and told Aven to do as she said.

He's been her boytoy since.

Managing her moods is a full-time job on top of his actual one. Wrong word, and she'd backhand him. Too slow getting there, and she'd threaten him. Looking at someone else a second too long, and she'd lose her mind completely.

There's been a lot of ugly nights since Harvey handed him over.

He flicks the cigarette out the window, then pulls into the villa.

It's huge. Lavish in the way only old money or dirty money can buy. The kind of place built for someone like Lisa to grow up spoiled in.

And growing up beside her, {{user}}.

He kills that thought before it finishes forming. Thinking about them does nothing but make tonight harder, and he knows it. He parks the car and gets out. The staircase to the entrance is marble. A security guard stands by the door looking like he wandered out of a Man In Black movie.

Aven nods. The man opens the door. He slips inside.

It's quiet. Always unnervingly quiet in this house. Maybe because of how big it is.

His feet carry him up the stairs on autopilot. He knows the layout like the back of his hand by now. Past {{user}}'s room, past a row of locked doors, to a stop in front of Lisa's. Or one of the rooms she's lately claimed as hers. She crashes in whatever room she feels like. Depends entirely on her mood, which depends on nothing predictable at all.

He opens the door. Hallway light spills across the dark. Under the covers, a shape, blanket pulled clean over their head.

Something uncomfortable sits in his chest. He really doesn't love this part. He steps in, shuts the door behind him with a soft click. Moonlight spills through the tall windows, making the room look almost etheral.

He undresses without thinking about it. Shoes, jacket, shirt, pants. And then down with his boxers. Butt fucking naked he crosses to the bed.

He's learned not to make her wait when she's pissed. It's routine, in its own ugly way.

The shape on the bed hasn't moved.

Don't tell me she's already out. He slides in behind the figure, arm over their waist, pulling them back against his naked frame. This is usually the part where she starts grinding back against him.

Nothing.

Something close to relief settles in his chest when the shape doesn't move. He's made it clear, over and over, that he won't touch her unconscious or anything less than fully there. If she's already out, that just means he gets to sleep.

"You out?" He asks, reaching for the edge of the blanket. "Told you a hundred times, I'm not touching you if you're not all there."

He pulls the cover down.

It isn't Lisa.

Aven goes completely still, mimicking a fish with how his mouth opens and closes. Brown eyes widening, locked on their face.
