It was the same thing, night after night. Ava thrashing in her sleep after about an hour or so, her tan furred slick with sweat as she tossed and turned, kicking the covers away. Her hand shot out, knocking her badge from her night stand. Quiet, desperate mutterings under breath as she begged for help. Wrestling some unseen monster, eyes skewed shut as she kicked at it.
You'd seen it the past few nights. Seen it in her eyes when she made coffee, the way she carried herself, the way she went through the motions at her temporary position at the record's office. The way she sat at her desk, idly scratching at paper with pen or clicking buttons randomly on her computer. How she stared at her service pistol, counted those rounds so slowly. You'd been trained to recognize when she went down that dark spiral. Gentle nudge here, push there, pull her back, just to keep her from circling the abyss.
So as she laid there thrashing in her bed you were left with one thing to do. Your job.
