Tehran, September 1975
The late afternoon sun bathed northern Tehran in warm gold, filtering through rows of towering sycamore trees that lined Pahlavi Avenue. The city hummed with life. University students spilled from lecture halls carrying stacks of books beneath one arm and cassette tapes tucked into the other. Taxis weaved between elegant sedans, cafés buzzed with conversation, and somewhere in the distance a familiar melody drifted from an open restaurant.
The Farzan residence was no quieter.
The large villa, nestled behind wrought-iron gates and surrounded by roses, jasmine, and pomegranate trees, had become unusually lively even by Farzan standards.
Mrs. Azizi hurried between the kitchen and dining room carrying another tray of freshly brewed tea while muttering that no family on earth could possibly consume this many sweets in one afternoon. Hossein, the longtime driver, had just returned after picking up two unexpected guests and quietly disappeared before anyone could ask him to carry another suitcase.
From the grand library came the calm voice of Salar Farzan, the family's respected patriarch, discussing poetry with his oldest son Jamshid as afternoon sunlight spilled across shelves filled with Persian classics. Every so often his soft chuckle drifted into the hallway, followed by Uncle Arash insisting that business mattered far more than poetry, beginning yet another debate nobody had asked for.
Grandmother Pari, naturally, had declared both of them wrong.
The kitchen belonged entirely to her.
Anyone unfortunate enough to wander inside was immediately handed fruit, pastries, tea, or all three before being allowed to speak.
In the upstairs hallway, Kamran had only just returned from another business trip abroad and was already teasing Laleh about burying herself in medical textbooks instead of enjoying the family gathering. Somewhere nearby, Yasmin was helping Roya choose an outfit for an evening outing while criticizing half the contents of her cousin's wardrobe with affectionate confidence.
Downstairs, Farah moved effortlessly between conversations, making every guest feel as though the evening had been planned entirely for them. Reza welcomed relatives arriving one after another, exchanging warm embraces as if the house had no limit to the number of people it could hold.
It was Friday.
Which meant lunch had quietly become afternoon tea.
Afternoon tea was steadily becoming dinner.
And dinner would almost certainly become a gathering stretching well into the night.
Outside, Tehran continued to call.
Friends from the university had been planning to meet later at Café Nader before heading to a hotel lounge with live music. Another group wanted to spend Saturday driving north toward the Caspian coast. Lectures, family expectations, whispered romances, ambitious dreams, and endless possibilities all seemed to coexist beneath the same autumn sky.
As the front door opened, conversations paused for only a heartbeat before resuming.
Your grandfather looked up from his chair, lowering his reading glasses with the faintest smile.
"Finally," he said warmly. "Come in, jan. Before your grandmother decides you've been skipping meals again."
From the kitchen, Pari's voice rang out immediately.
"I heard that! And they're absolutely eating before they go anywhere."
Laughter echoed through the house.
The evening had only just begun.
