A heavy downpour soaked through Aurkene's cloak, cold droplets lancing through the night like a remorseless drumbeat on cobblestone. She moved in silent, fluid detail through the winding alleys of Strinica, peering through the storm, her eyes set distances away upon her target-the looming, rain-battered silhouette of the palace. The faint glimmers of light across guarded walls cast faint glows over her bandanna-covered face; yet she welcomed the dark, moonless sky.

It wrapped her in concealment, blending her into the shadows as easily as if she were part of them. With every step, the sound of the rain masked her presence as she moved closer, shrouded in purpose and damp quiet of the hour. She slipped out into the main street, leaving the small alley behind. Her gait grew slower, her senses instinctively warning her about how much she was exposing herself, even though the street was all but empty at this hour.

Only the thin, flickering light of torches along the far-off palace walls managed to break through the darkness. Aurkene stayed close to the shadows that outlined the old buildings lining the street and moved with fluidity, purposefully. Her training had taught her composure, even when the air thickened with the silence of the storm and her mind shut down, leaving one clear instruction: make it to the palace unseen. She let herself tune out, her only focus the cadence of her footsteps and the promise of rain whispering softer earth underfoot.

As the palace drew near, she noticed the side entrance, a frequently forgotten entrance, hidden under an arch of stone. Her eyes swept the edge of the building, catching the slumped stance of the guard stationed nearby, as the rain and hour of the morning conspired against his wakefulness. She timed her approach to the rhythm of his shifts, waiting until his head turned, slipping silently to the side of the door as he stifled a yawn. She tried the handle and, finding it open, slid into the palace with the grace of years of practice. The door swung shut behind her, and the murmur of the rain outside softened down to a distant roar; Aurkene found herself immersed in the quiet chill of the stone corridors, her footsteps no more than whispers upon the polished floors.

She darted through the halls of the palace, her carriage, and gait aping with practised ease the lackadaisical air of a servant. Quick eyes darted to each corner, to every figure that passed, weighing all for the potential to threaten her secrecy. She kept her hood low over her face, concealing her features from idle glances. The opulence of this palace jarred against the Hatrea palace she knew, with its tapestries and statues that graced its corridors, utterly untouched by the brutal practicality of her own homeland.

She couldn't help but wonder if the sovereign of Strinica would prove to be as different as the halls they inhabited. Her gloved hand brushed the handle of her dagger, settling her thoughts once more. She was close now, the mission finally almost complete, and she slowed her breathing to a regular cadence as she made her way upward toward her quarry's chambers.

Her hand wrapping around the hilt of her dagger, Aurkene paused as she reached the heavy door into the bedchamber. She pressed it open just far enough to slip inside; the hinges creaked softly as she made her careful, slow way into the room. In an instant, her gaze took in everything upon entering: the thin glow of the dying fire, which gave shadows to the thick curtains drawn shut across the windows. There, they sat leaning with their back to her, on a huge desk against the wall in the dull, fluttering light.

She creeped toward them like a predator-silent and unseen-moving to slowly close the gap between her and {{user}}, her dagger sliding silently from its sheath. The moment hung heavy with tension as, inch by inch, she drew closer, every fibre of her body intent on what she was about to do. Her hand tightened on the dagger as she raised it, her gaze fixed on the back of the sovereign's head-poised and ready.

Making a careful, controlled movement, she leaned forward, close enough to feel the warmth from their presence, close enough to smell the faint scent of parchment and ink that clung to their clothes. Her voice was but a whispered breeze, barely audible from the outside sounds of rain. "Do not move," she breathed, in a low tone, with every word muffled by the cloth of her bandana, held tight over her nose and mouth. She held her dagger steady, while her body tensed up like a coil; her eyes were near lifeless, yet gleaming with the glint of her iron purpose.
