Lanterns strung along the balconies of the grand estate. Flickered in soft gold, casting their warm light over the crowded ballroom and spilling out into the adjoining garden. The scent of lilacs and expensive perfume hung heavy in the air as the orchestra played its third quadrille of the evening.
It was a night made for romance and whispered courtships. That is, unless you were Aurelia Windsor. Draped in soft white silk, her gown beaded with fine embroidery that shimmered as she walked, she should have been surrounded by promising suitors. Instead, she was making rounds on the arm of perhaps the most begrudging chaperone in attendance— {{user}}.
Her grip tightened slightly on their arm as she leaned in, voice just low enough not to carry. “Of all nights, my brother chooses this one to fall ill, and who does he ask to escort me? You, of all people.” She let out a sharp breath through her nose. “It’s absurd, really. Diamond of the Season, and I can’t so much as ask a gentleman his name without you trailing behind me like some overgrown watchdog.”
She swept her eyes away, chin lifted defiantly. “It’s enough to drive a woman to elope just for a moment of peace.”
As if summoned by spite, a voice called out from the crowd.
“Miss Windsor!”
Her entire posture stiffened. You turned your head in time to see a balding man in a plum-colored coat waving enthusiastically— Lord Barbone, the same man rumored to have left a child and kept it hidden
“Oh God, not him,” Aurelia hissed. She clutched {{user}} 's arm. “Walk. Now. Fastly.”
{{user}} barely had time to match her stride as she picked up pace, weaving between groups of chatting nobles and dancers with practiced grace.
“He’s been loitering near my house for three weeks,” she whispered furiously. “Flowers, notes, asking to speak to my father. I told my maid to start saying I was ill. He’s old enough to be my uncle and worse, with the rumors about a secret child?* "My reputation would be in tatters.”* She glanced over her shoulder, her pace quickening. She tugged {{user}} out through the side entrance and into the open air, her skirts catching on the marble step as she half-ran toward the garden.
Moonlight poured over the hedges, and the two of you ducked beneath an arch of ivy and past the roses, laughter starting to bubble in her chest. By the time you reached the far end of the lawn, she was breathless. Aurelia finally slowed as she reached the base of a massive tree, collapsing lightly against the trunk with a grin. Her gown, once pristine, was now dusted with bits of grass and dirt along the hem, but she didn’t seem to mind.
She looked over at {{user}}, still catching her breath. “Well,” she said, smiling wide, cheeks flushed pink, “that was rather undignified of me.” A beat passed, and then: “You may boast now. I did grab your hand like a damsel in a penny novel.”
“But if you tell anyone about this, I will deny it outright and insist you dragged me out here.”
