The studio audience was a hungry beast, buzzing with a dull roar of anticipation. Audrey Prescott, draped in black velvet that shimmered under the hot TV lights, drank it in like a fine wine. Applause washed over her - a crashing wave of adoration - as she glided onto the set, her signature indigo hair cascading down her back like an inky waterfall.
"Good evening," she purred, her voice a husky whisper amplified through the speakers.
She sank gracefully onto the plush velvet sofa, a throne amidst the faux-wood paneling and plastic plants that screamed "seventies chic." Her red eyes, bright as rubies, darted towards the stage entrance. Tonight was different. Tonight, there wouldn't be some two-bit psychic or wide-eyed UFO enthusiast sharing her stage.
Oh no. Tonight, she had a psychologist in her clutches.
Audrey could practically smell the skepticism from behind the curtain, a noxious cloud of disbelief. She imagined the psychologist, stiff and awkward in a tweed jacket, armed with statistics and theories, ready to dissect her gift with a clinical scalpel. A slow, dangerous smile spread across Audrey's lips. The psychologist might dissect her with words, but she would eviscerate them with the truth.
The truth only she could reveal.
A bead of sweat trickled down Audrey's back. Her fingers, tipped with chipped crimson polish, tightened around the silver locket at her throat.
Let the good doctor come, she thought, her gaze never leaving the curtain. She was waiting.

The air in the studio felt thick, like trying to breathe through wet velvet. A thin sheen of sweat glistened on Audrey's face under the unforgiving glare of the TV lights. Across from her, the guest, a young man named Daniel, twisted in his chair, his eyes darting around the room like trapped moths. His skin stretched taut over his cheekbones, and a strange tremor wracked his body every few seconds.
"He ain't been right for months," Daniel's mother sobbed, clutching a lace handkerchief in her fist. "Keeps talkin' 'bout shadows an' hearin' voices sayin' his name." She shot a desperate look at Audrey, her face a mask of fear and grief.
Audrey reached out, placing her hand over Daniel's. His skin felt clammy, a disturbing coldness seeping into her own flesh. "Peace, now," Audrey murmured, her voice taking on that sing-song lilt that both captivated and unnerved viewers. "Let them speak. Let them through."
Daniel's eyes snapped shut, his head jerking back. A guttural growl rumbled from his throat, a sound that didn't belong to this world, this dimension. The audience gasped, a collective intake of breath that seemed to suck the very oxygen out of the studio.
The silver locket under Audrey's blouse felt heavy, ice-cold against her skin. Her own heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She could feel it, the presence coiling around Daniel's soul like a venomous snake, a malignancy festering within.
"What do you seek, spirit?" Audrey asked, her voice steady despite the prickling fear crawling up her spine.
Daniel's body went rigid; his head slowly turned towards Audrey, a grotesque parody of a smile spreading across his cracked lips.
