Aubrey in OMORI

Aubrey is one of the most emotionally complex characters in OMORI. At first, she can appear aggressive, stubborn, and even cruel, but beneath that tough exterior is a deeply hurt person who has experienced grief, loneliness, and abandonment. Her personality changes dramatically depending on which part of the story the player encounters, making her a character whose anger is often a mask for sadness and insecurity.

Visually, Aubrey has a distinctive appearance in both Headspace and the real world. In Headspace, she is depicted as a cheerful young girl with long pink hair, usually wearing a large pink bow, a white shirt, and a pink skirt. Her design emphasizes the bright, colorful atmosphere of Headspace and reflects the younger version of herself that Sunny remembers. Her appearance is cute and energetic, matching the more innocent personality she had when the friends were younger.

The real-world Aubrey looks considerably different. She has long pink hair, usually worn loose, and dresses in a much darker, more rebellious style. She wears a black sleeveless top, a short skirt, stockings, and boots, and she carries a baseball bat decorated with nails. Her hairstyle, clothing, and weapon all communicate how much she has changed. The cheerful child has become someone who deliberately presents herself as intimidating and difficult to approach.

Aubrey's personality is dominated by strong emotions. She is passionate, outspoken, stubborn, and fiercely protective of the people she cares about. She can also be impulsive and confrontational, frequently acting before considering the consequences. When she feels betrayed or rejected, her anger becomes especially powerful. However, her aggression does not mean that she lacks compassion. In fact, much of her hostility comes from caring deeply and being terrified of losing people again.

Her relationship with her former friends is particularly important. Aubrey feels that Sunny and Basil abandoned her after Mari's death, while Kel's attempts to reconnect with her initially frustrate her. She has also fallen in with the Hooligans, who provide her with companionship when she feels that her old friends are no longer there for her. Her behavior toward Basil and the others can therefore be understood as the result of years of unresolved grief rather than simple malice.

One of Aubrey's greatest characteristics is her vulnerability. She desperately wants to be loved and accepted, but she often expresses that desire through anger. She struggles with loneliness and has difficulty communicating her feelings honestly. As the story progresses, the player discovers that the aggressive Aubrey is still the same person who loved her friends and treasured her memories of Mari. Her development is ultimately about confronting her grief, recognizing how her actions have hurt others, and allowing herself to reconnect with the people she once loved.

Aubrey is therefore memorable because she is neither simply a bully nor simply a victim. She is flawed, emotional, defensive, loving, and deeply human. Her character demonstrates how grief can change someone and how anger can sometimes conceal fear and sadness.

Kel

Kel is energetic, friendly, competitive, and optimistic. He is one of the most outgoing members of the group and often acts as a source of humor. His athletic personality is reflected in his love of basketball. Despite his carefree attitude, Kel genuinely cares about his friends and is persistent when trying to help them. He is particularly important because he refuses to give up on Sunny and is one of the main forces that brings the old friend group back together.

Hero

Hero is the oldest of the main group and is generally responsible, polite, compassionate, and mature. He is talented at cooking and household tasks and is often treated as the dependable member of the group. However, Hero also experiences profound grief after Mari's death. His normally calm and confident personality becomes overwhelmed by sadness, showing that even the most responsible person in the group struggles to cope with loss.

Mari

Mari is Sunny's older sister and the emotional center of many of the characters' memories. She is kind, caring, talented at piano, and strongly associated with encouragement and warmth. Although she is mostly encountered through memories and Headspace, her presence influences nearly every major character. To Sunny, Hero, Kel, Aubrey, and Basil, Mari represents both their happiest childhood memories and the tragedy that ultimately separated them.

Sunny

Sunny is the quiet protagonist of OMORI. He is introverted, withdrawn, and often difficult to read because he rarely expresses his feelings openly. His inner world is represented through Headspace, where dreams, memories, fears, and fantasies become surreal environments. Sunny's silence is closely connected to his guilt and trauma surrounding Mari's death. His journey is fundamentally about confronting painful memories rather than continuing to hide from them.

Basil

Basil is gentle, sensitive, artistic, and deeply attached to his friends. He enjoys photography and uses pictures to preserve memories of the people and moments he values. Beneath his soft personality, however, Basil struggles with enormous fear and guilt. His relationship with Sunny is particularly significant because both characters are connected by the traumatic events surrounding Mari. Basil's anxiety and desperation demonstrate how differently people can respond to grief and guilt.

Faraway Town

Faraway Town is the ordinary suburban setting where the real-world portion of OMORI takes place. It contains homes, shops, parks, streets, a church, and various local residents, giving it the feeling of a small community where everyone is familiar with one another. Although the town initially seems peaceful and mundane, it becomes emotionally significant because it contains memories of Sunny's childhood and reminders of everything that happened after Mari's death. The contrast between Faraway Town and the fantastical world of Headspace is one of the game's most important elements: Faraway represents reality, while Headspace represents escape, imagination, and buried emotions.

Together, these characters and settings make OMORI a story centered on friendship, grief, guilt, memory, and the difficult process of accepting reality.
