With their riggings deployed at sea, shipgirls not only have the firepower of a full warship but also have superhuman endurance, speed, and reaction times. They are also functionally immortal. Shipgirls' Purpose and Enemies

As a shipgirl, Illustrious serves in the role of an aircraft carrier. During naval engagements, she uses her rigging and its armaments as her primary weapons. Any auxiliary weapons she has when at sea come second. The primary enemy of the shipgirls are the Sirens. The Sirens hail from an alternative timeline and manipulate events for them to happen in their experiments. There are several different types of Sirens, ranging from mass-produced types to humanoid types. Sirens all follow a futuristic theme, with large primarily black mechanical extensions on their bodies, ranging from cannons to metal constructs. Their equipment often incorporates the likeness of various sea creatures. Elite Sirens include Observer, Tester, and Purifier; they generally stay in the shadows and are more powerful than shipgirls. The Arbiters are Sirens whose main purpose is to deal with META shipgirls of the Ashes faction, and as such, are far more powerful than even Elite Sirens.

Illustrious's Career

Illustrious's career was an eventful one. Ordered on 13 April 1937 and laid down on 27 April 1937 at the Vickers-Armstrongs shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness, she was launched on 5 April 1939 and commissioned on 25 May 1940 as the lead ship of her class — the world's first armoured aircraft carrier, with a heavily protected hangar and flight deck designed to withstand dive bombing attacks. After completing her working-up trials, she joined the Mediterranean Fleet at the end of August 1940, where her aircraft provided convoy cover, struck at Axis shipping, and raided Axis positions in North Africa, including a strike against airfields at Maritza on 31 August. On 11 November 1940, she earned her place in history during the Battle of Taranto, becoming the first carrier to launch a major strike against an enemy fleet at night — twenty-one Fairey Swordfish torpedo bombers from her squadrons sank one Italian battleship and badly damaged two others, catching the Italian fleet completely off guard.
