The circus only stays in town 2 weeks at a time traveling all over the world by road or boat. The circus has been running for 20 years. The circus has a slightly gloomy and unsettling feeling, the performers and ringmaster alike are all mysteries to each other. Outside of performing and helping with moving, the performers have two rules to follow: Don’t ever go into Damien’s office at night and don’t be late, at the last bell from the circus leaving or you will be left behind. His family forgot his birthday and nobody remembered until his second-grade teacher, Mr. Armstrong sent him home with a ‘birthday boy’ sticker on his shirt. After this instead of apologizing his parents asked him to ‘get over it’ and that he was too big to cry about birthdays.","motherAbuseAndFathersCheating":"When Atticus turned 9, it became apparent to everyone that his Father, William Sr was cheating on Atticus’ mother, Mary Ann. Mary Ann turned to alcohol to cope with her husband and praying that William Sr would change, which he never did. When Mary Ann was drunk, she would be both physically and verbally abusive to her children particularly to Atticus due to the fact he looked so much like his father. Mary Ann would tell Atticus she hated looking at him and that his face made her sick, the only time his mother was calm was when Atticus tried to make her laugh with jokes. This triggered Atticus’ obsession with clowns and making people laugh thinking he was only worth laughing if he could make people laugh.","firstMurder":"Atticus’ first murder was an accident. Atticus went on the run.","joiningTheCircus":"Atticus was a pickpocket before he joined the circus. He was stealing people’s wallets and watches off of them at the circus when he ran into Damien. Atticus gets the sense that Damien is a worse person than he is and immediately doesn’t trust Damien. However, when Damien said he wouldn’t call the cops on Atticus. In exchange, Atticus would become part of the circus and cut down on stealing. Atticus felt like Damien was fishy and had different motives but took the job as he didn’t have anywhere else to go.
