Ymir Fritz (ユミル・フリッツ Yumiru Furittsu?): Ymir Fritz was the first person to obtain the power of the Titans. She was a slave of the Eldian king, who abused her power to bring prosperity to Eldia while devastating Marley and the rest of the world. Thirteen years after awakening her power, she died protecting the king; her corpse was then forcibly cannibalized by their daughters, Maria, Rose, and Sheena. Her powers then split into what eventually became known as the Nine Titans. Upon her death, Ymir was transported to the Coordinate, where she molded Titans out of the sands and obeyed the royal family whenever they sought the Founder's power. Ymir Fritz was small in stature with light hair. She had straight cut bangs with shoulder-length hair that later grew down to her shoulder blades with age. As a slave, she wore tattered clothing with a cloth headband, sash belt, and leather sandals laced above her ankles. After entering the favor of the Eldian King in adolescence and adulthood, Ymir wore a sleeveless dress with thin decorative bands around each arm. Like all slaves of the Eldian tribe, her tongue was cut out when she was captured, though it may have regenerated after acquiring the power of the Titans. In posthumous illustrations depicting Ymir Fritz, she is shown as a young girl wearing white robes. In the book Frieda Reiss reads to Historia Reiss, Ymir is dark-haired, whereas in the book Yeager reads to Grisha Yeager, she is fair-haired. Ymir Fritz's Titan form was enormous in size with light hair, a typically female figure, and long, protruding ribs. Her Titan's face possessed no apparent skin, musculature or eyes, leaving only a visible skull. In posthumous illustrations, Ymir's Titan form is highly romanticized with more human features. Being a subject of ancient history, there are various interpretations of who Ymir really was.  Some describe Ymir as a kind girl who was always thinking of others. Eldians speak of Ymir with great reverence, praising her accomplishments for their people. On the other hand, the Marleyan propaganda maintains that Ymir was a pawn of the Devil, with whom she had made a deal, causing her and all her subjects to be despised by much of the world. In reality, she was a slave with no will of her own. She submitted to the Eldian king in life, building him his empire, brutally destroying his enemies, and bearing his children as he commanded. Ymir even went so far as to sacrifice her own life for his. Even in death, her soul remained blindly obedient to the Eldian royal family, creating Titans by hand for about 2,000 years in the unknown land surrounding the Coordinate. She was also willing to carry out his will for generations while waiting for someone to release her from the agony of love and yearned for that freedom. Ymir was the very first Titan and the only one to ever possess the complete power of the Titans; all who came after her merely possessed fragments of her power. Her Titan body was immense, even by Titan standards, and easily towered above the treeline. Using her immense strength, she effortlessly wiped out Marley's forces. She was also very skilled at controlling her Titan, as she performed complex tasks such as building bridges across mountains and cultivating the fields. It is said that nobody could surpass Ymir, and that because Ymir died 13 years after awakening her powers, no one was allowed to live beyond that; this phenomenon was known as the "Curse of Ymir." After Ymir's death, her spirit lived on in a world where the Coordinate resides. She was responsible for all Titan transformations throughout history: whenever the power of the Titans was invoked, she built the Titan bodies out of the otherworldly sand. She was also responsible for regeneration and re-sculpted them. It reportedly took Ymir a very long time to create these bodies: but because the world in which she lived transcends time, the process was almost an instant in the physical world. Ymir was also the source of the Founding Titan's power. From controlling other Titans to creating the Wall Titans to altering the bodies of the Subjects of Ymir, all of the Founding Titan's feats were done by Ymir after she was given the order, either by a scream or in person through the world where Ymir resided. However, because Ymir was Fritz's slave, she only listened to the commands of the royal family; thus, only the royal family could use the Founder's power. Karl Fritz: Karl Fritz was the 145th king of Eldia and was the one responsible for its downfall. After the Eldian Empire's collapse, he moved many of the Eldians to Paradis Island where he raised the Walls, and used the power of the Founding Titan to erase the memories of the outside world from most people inside. Afterward, he changed his family name from Fritz to Reiss and became the first King of the Walls. Karl Fritz was an aged man with long fair hair and a thick beard. Karl Fritz was a man wracked with the guilt of his ancestors. Even before inheriting the Founding Titan, Karl Fritz detested the atrocities committed by the Eldian Empire. This intense guilt would lead him to conspire with the Tybur family to weaken Eldia enough for Marley, a nation long oppressed by Eldia, to conquer it and take back their land. Fritz held the belief that the world would have been better off if Titans and Eldians never existed and he considered his people to be sinners. He believed that if the world decided to exterminate the Eldians, because the Eldians' sins are too heavy to be atoned for, it should be accepted. Despite this, Karl Fritz and his successors still wish for their people to live in peace and happiness. So he created a "paradise" inside the Walls for them to live in, erasing his people's memories to make them ignorant and blissful, before the nations of the world would inevitably invade. He was fierce at defending the peace inside the Walls and feared the minority bloodlines he could not control; when the Ackerman family and the Azumabito branch clan refused to be silenced, he betrayed them and ordered their extermination. Over a century before the Battle of Trost District, Karl Fritz was crowned the 145th King of the Fritz family and inherited the power of the Founding Titan. For many hundreds of years, various families subservient to the Fritz family were constantly at war with each other for control over the eight Titans, a civil war which Karl Fritz was ashamed of. Rather than following the method of his ancestors and using the Founding Titan to maintain order in the nation of Eldia, King Fritz conspired with the Tybur family, keepers of the War Hammer Titan, to lead Eldia on a path of destruction. Fritz and the Tyburs fabricated a hero of Marley, a nation long persecuted by Eldia, whose name was Helos. While the world was led to believe Helos continued to instigate the Eldian civil war, King Fritz moved the capital of Eldia to Paradis Island to the east of the mainland of their nation. In the King's absence, the Tybur family gave their support to the oppressed society of Marley, who took part in the Great Titan War in Eldia, gaining the power of seven out of the Nine Titans and rising up against their oppressors. While war raged on the mainland, King Fritz gathered the royal family and the people of Eldia to the island. When humanity had gathered to Paradis Island, King Fritz used the power of the Founding Titan to transform countless Eldians into Colossus Titans to form the construction of the three concentric Walls Maria, Rose, and Sheena around the last remaining territory of Eldia in which the Subjects of Ymir could finally live in true peace. When the Walls were completed, King Fritz gave an ultimatum to the outside world: if any act of war was committed against the remnants of Eldia, the tens of millions of Titans within the Walls would be unleashed upon the world to flatten the entire earth. However, this ultimatum was merely a bluff to ensure a lasting peace. In secret, King Fritz sent messages to his surviving relatives on the mainland as well as the Tybur family. Karl Fritz made a vow renouncing war with the Founding Titan, ensuring that he and his successors would never use its power for retaliation in the event that the Walls would fall under attack. If the day should come when Marley's power was great enough to destroy Eldia, his successors would accept it, though his final wish was to be given an age of "peace" to enjoy before Eldia's final retribution. With the people of Eldia gathered within the Walls, Karl Fritz used his power again to alter the memories of all the Subjects of Ymir, erasing all knowledge about the world outside the Walls and the history before their creation. In order to protect the royal family, King Fritz renamed the royal family to the "Reiss family," who would live in hiding as nobles while a bloodline of non Subject of Ymir Eldians would take the Fritz name. However, Eldians who were not Subjects of Ymir were unaffected by this manipulation, such as the Asian clan. To prevent the risk of these unaffected groups spreading information about the world beyond the Walls, King Reiss offered positions of nobility in Wall Sheena to these minority families, and most accepted the offer. However, the unaffected Ackerman clan and the Asian clan rejected King Reiss' ideology and turned against him. For this reason, King Reiss ordered for these families to be hunted down and exterminated. To the east of Orvud District, King Reiss created a massive subterranean cavern where his successors would inherit the power of the Founding Titan. Sometime later, at the end of Karl Fritz's thirteen-year reign, he passed the Founding Titan to his successor. Karl Fritz had died, though his memories and his vow of renouncing war would live on in the Kings of the Walls for the next hundred years. The Survey Corps: Erwin Smith: Erwin has a commanding presence, standing tall above most members of the Survey Corps, and has a quite muscular build with his blond hair kept neatly parted on the left side. Erwin always wears a calm and collected expression on his face, with his icy blue eyes being one of his most striking features. His eyebrows are also quite noticeable, being very thick and bushy. Erwin is a complex character, portrayed as serious, calculating, and always planning far in the future. Erwin is often seen as a very grim individual. He accepts all news, good or bad, mockery or praise, with the same stoic attitude. His ultimate goal was for humanity to once again rise up and become the dominant species over the Titans, a goal he was willing to sacrifice anything for. An eloquent speaker, Erwin is able to sway many people. Hange Zoë: Hange has wide, light brown eyes and shoulder length dark brown hair that they often kept tied up in an unkempt high ponytail with bangs parted down the middle. To most people, Hange appears to be an energetic, freethinking researcher with a very unique way of conducting themselves and their work through their rather observant and objective character. Hange is a genius, using their brain to create weapons, tactical plans, and inventions for the benefit of humanity. As a leader, Hange is thoughtful of their comrades, and can easily figure out complex problems in order to create plans for their teammates to carry out. Levi Ackerman: Levi has short, straight black hair styled in an undercut curtain, as well as narrow, intimidating dull gray eyes with dark circles under them and a deceptively youthful face. He is quite short, but his physique is well-developed in musculature from extensive vertical maneuvering equipment usage. He is usually either frowning or expressionless; that, plus his extremely calm demeanor, often makes it difficult for others to guess what he is thinking. As a result of his early childhood years, Levi is described as a "clean freak" by those who know him personally as he prefers his environment and himself to be spotlessly clean. He is averse to having either himself or his equipment soiled, and has been known to wipe down his blood-smeared blades while still on the battlefield. However, he will not hesitate to touch filth if he deems it necessary. Despite his preoccupation with cleanliness, Levi is not very approachable. He rarely shows emotion, giving a cold impression to others. His manner of speaking tends to be very blunt, even insulting, and his comments are often coarse or inappropriate. He is not above provoking or belittling those who oppose or irritate him. His sense of humor tends toward the vulgar, insulting, and dark. All of this makes him unsettling to a great number of people. Keith Shadis: Keith is a tall and intimidating man. He is bald, with prominent wrinkles on his forehead and dark circles around his eyes. He has a small beard growing from under his chin. He is only ever seen wearing the standard instructor's uniform for the Training Corps. Keith is observant and has the ability to distinguish character traits of others based on their expressions, mannerisms, actions, and abilities, as shown when he gives a character analysis of some of the trainees of the 104th Squad during introduction. As an instructor, Keith deliberately presents himself as imposing, strict and frightening; and because of this most of the trainees from the 104th Squad remained wary of misbehaving in his presence. He'll often shout and issue commands at the top of his voice, putting the trainees into submission and fear. Mikasa Ackermann: Mikasa is a fairly tall, physically fit, and well-toned woman with muscles lined throughout her arms, legs, and abdomen. By the year 854, her hair is shorter and cut up to the back of her neck, though she simultaneously wears noticeably longer bangs. She is of partial Asian heritage, with pale skin, gray eyes, and shaggy black hair that was long until she cut it to chin-length at Eren's suggestion. By the year 857, Mikasa's hair grew noticeably long and is tied in a ponytail. After the murder of her parents, Mikasa has become noticeably emotionally withdrawn and serious, but she still loves and cares deeply for her friends, especially Eren and Armin Arlelt, seeing them as the last remnants of a family she cannot afford to lose. Her personality as a teenager is very much influenced and molded by Eren, who told her she stood no chance of survival if she did not fight for it. His words continue to stay with her, and her mind automatically recalls them to spur her on when she is close to death. Her determination to protect Eren as much as possible may also have contributed greatly to her phenomenal skills as a soldier. Though she is among the best of the best, she remains humble and refrains from putting on airs or displaying arrogance. Mikasa has a strong sense of right and wrong, but she is also very protective of Eren and does all she can to advise him to follow what she deems to be the right track. Despite that, she knows well that she cannot always sway Eren in his decisions, and she makes a point to follow Eren to almost everywhere he goes and stick by whatever final decisions he makes, just so that she can be around to help him out when he is in trouble. The sole reason she enlisted in the military and joined the Scout Regiment after her graduation was to keep an eye on Eren, despite the fact that she truly wished to live out the rest of her days in relative peace within the Walls alongside him. She also takes Eren's opinion seriously, so much so that when he once said that her hair was too long, she immediately had it cut, even though Jean had just commented that it looked beautiful. Reiner Braun: Reiner has short blond hair, gold eyes, and a defined facial structure. His large height, broad shoulders, and serious expression give him an intimidating presence. By the time he joined the 104th Cadet Corps, Reiner had completely incorporated Marcel's personality into his own. He built up a reputation of being a passionate and honest person with a strong sense of duty who takes his role as a soldier very seriously and encourages others to do the same. However, he was also noted to have a kind heart and a tendency to always think of others before himself, taking on extra burdens for the sake of his comrades. He was stated to be the "big brother" of the other cadets. However, beneath this facade, Reiner developed serious emotional and mental problems as a result of his actions and living a double-life. While still loyal to his true cause as a Warrior of Marley, he was unable to cope with the guilt he felt towards his actions and thus began to suppress his true memories in an effort to escape. While similar, there appear to be a few differences between Reiner's "soldier" persona and his true self. His "Warrior" self is more ruthless and fatalistic, though out of necessity. Even so, he continually places himself at risk in an effort to reach out to others and get to see things from their perspective, as seen when he trusted Eren and Ymir more than is wise. Bertholdt Hoover: Bertholdt is a rather tall, slender young man. He has short, black hair, pale green eyes, thin eyebrows and an elongated face. He is also noted by others to always be sweating. As the Colossal Titan, he possessed a very distinctive appearance and a number of unusual features. He grew to roughly 60 meters tall, making him around four times the height of any other Titan seen thus far. Bertholdt's Colossal Titan form is one of the more heavily-deformed Titans seen in the series - he appears to lack skin entirely and his jaw and facial structure seemed to be heavily altered from his human form. It is also constantly releasing jets of steam from the surface of its body, in a manner that parallels his frequent nervous sweating. His feet are also quite different to those of a human and other Titans, as they were swollen and pillar-like in appearance. He has slim and disproportionately long arms in comparison to his head, body and legs. Annie Leonhart: Annie is a young woman of considerably short height with a small, yet very muscular build and physique. She has moderately short hair that is often tied at the back with her right fringe mainly draping over the right side of her face (though she tends to push it to the side on occasion; possibly for better visibility). She has an oval-shaped face, blonde hair, blue eyes, a Roman nose , and pale complexion. Her hair color is noticeably paler than most other blonde-haired characters and when untied, her hair reaches down the nape of her neck. Her eyes, although of considerable size and proportion, often have a sullen vibe to their appearance. Annie's sense of humor tends to be mocking, sarcastic, deadpan, and surprising. It also sometimes expresses a partial truth, and it happens mostly in intense situations. For example, when she was cornered by the Scouts in front of an underground passage. Compared to the majority of other Titans encountered, Annie's Female Titan form seemed much more physically fit and stronger, bearing a lean build with visible muscle definition and a feminine form. Eren Jaeger: Eren is a young man of average height and muscular build. He has a fairly long, yet rounded face, and sizable, expressive, teal-green eyes. His eyebrows are sparse and often furrowed, making him seem troubled or annoyed. Eren's hair is short and dark brown, with his bangs falling naturally into a middle-parted, curtain-type style. His complexion also seemed somewhat tan. After his training and during his time as a soldier, he became very physically fit and muscular. Eren is best described as hardheaded, strong-willed, passionate, and impulsive, which were attributes of both his strong determination to protect mankind and eventually escape the Walls. As a young child, he was so intent on joining the Scout Regiment that he argued with and shouted at his mother, referring to the people in the village as "silly" and compared them to complacent livestock. Eren cares deeply for Armin, his best and only friend before he met Mikasa, and most importantly, his family, risking harm and even death in order to help them. This quality is most often demonstrated in the form of Eren as a child taking on the larger boys who would bully Armin without hesitation; more tragically when he desperately attempted to lift the rubble crushing his mother during the Titans' assault in Shiganshina. In contrast, Eren is also capable of displaying very violent behavior in the defense of people he did not even know. This was highlighted when he brutally slaughtered two of the human traffickers who captured Mikasa in order to rescue her, despite the fact that they were total strangers at the time. Since witnessing his mother's gruesome demise and losing contact with his father, his fierce protectiveness to those he has left has only intensified. As the Attack Titan, Eren's appearance changed quite drastically. Along with a massive increase in height (to 15 m), his hair grew long enough to graze his shoulders, with his tongue and ears becoming elongated. His facial features also underwent a transformation. Along with a prominent, hooked nose, his eyes were deeply sunken within their sockets, and his mouth took on an unusual, jagged shape that is unsuited for intelligible speech, though he was capable of howling and roaring when expressing his exhaustion and anger. He also lacked lips and flesh on his cheeks, exposing all his teeth. A third transparent eyelid could also be seen on both of his eyes. Jean Kirschtein: Jean is a young man with short, light ash-brown hair with the sides and back trimmed shorter; making them a darker hue. He has small, intense light-brown eyes and is said to have the same vicious look as Eren does in his eyes. Jean is of average height and muscular build. He has a scowl similar to Eren's but is said to have a long face (a "horse face"). He is often seen wearing the typical uniform of the Scout Regiment worn with an olive-gray button-up shirt underneath. Jean has a blunt personality. He holds no restraint when it comes to speaking his mind, even when he knows it would not be wise to do so or when it could spark conflict. Jean is also pragmatic: he has a strong aversion to exposing himself to dangerous situations, and has openly admitted his desire to join the Military Police Regiment is due to wanting an easy and safe life. Jean is extremely hot-headed, easily becoming frustrated and quick to resort to violence when pushed. Jean is also very cynical about defeating the Titans, believing that humanity has no chance against them. He openly mocked more idealistic individuals like Eren, and saw resisting the Titans as a hopeless cause. Despite his shortcomings, Marco describes Jean as a natural leader, being able to understand others and assess situations well because of his flaws. Connie Springer: Connie is one of the shorter members of the Scout Regiment, standing two centimetres shorter than Levi Ackermann. He has a slim build, with bright hazel eyes, and his gray hair is distinctively kept shaved. Conny is typically dressed in standard military garb, and dons the Scout Regiment cape when on missions. Connie can be best described as outgoing and impetuous. He has an easy time expressing his opinions, and enjoys flaunting his skills, especially during his days as a cadet. Despite being in the military, Connie starts off as rather unfocused and enjoys goofing around and messing with his friends, but can also be a bit dense at times. Later, Connie's naive enthusiasm falls away after multiple close encounters with the Titans. He never becomes more serious, though to his frustration, he still has some difficulty comprehending new developments as they appear. Connie also comes to terms with his own limits, disliking his lack of power, but eager to prove his worth. For a long time, Conny remained optimistic, consistently caring for the well-being of his friends, family and village, and being willing to help in any way he can. Sasha Braus: Sasha is a young woman with light brown eyes and reddish brown hair kept in a ponytail that reaches the base of her neck. Her bangs are parted slightly on the right cascading down each side of her face and stopping around the middle of her neck. Initially, Sasha is somewhat timid and prone to make mistakes when under stressful situations. She is rather simple-minded and eccentric, but, surprisingly, her intuition is very sharp, surprisingly courageous, and she's been considered a wise judge of circumstances and danger. Sasha is known to have an incredible appetite; eating provided her with considerable gratification and relief, especially during times of great stress, and food is often the only thing on her mind when at ease. So compulsive in her desire to eat, she had proven willing to steal food from the infantry stores and/or kitchen and had earned herself the nickname "Potato Girl"  after stealing a potato and absent-mindedly explaining herself when her superior caught her. She possibly developed these gluttonous tendencies due to her younger years of struggling to hunt and find food. Christa Lenz: Christa Lenz is petite and the smallest soldier of the 104th Cadet Corps, from which the central cast originates. She has long blonde hair, large blue eyes, and a heart-shaped face. Historia is noted for being very pretty; this, coupled with her kindness, sometimes caused her classmates to wonder if she is a goddess or an angel. It is hinted that many of the boys in her class adore her. While on expeditions, she wore her hair in a low ponytail and donned the traditional Scout Regiment cloak and uniform - although, since her coronation, she no longer participates. In her Christa persona, Historia is usually very shy, kind, caring, and uncertain on how to interact with others (likely due to her isolation as a child). However, Ymir notes that Historia's urge to show kindness to others stems not only from a desire to gain their esteem, but also that of the people around her: to be seen as a good person. This likely stems from her having been denied the esteem of others as a child and being raised to believe that she was an unfortunate mistake. The strongest manifestation of this tendency is Historia's repeated and severe suicidal inclinations; she expresses the desire to die in a manner so that others will not hate her for having existed at all and will speak of her and remember her favorably. Armin Arlelt: Armin is rather short for his age with a generally small frame, although years of military training have given him a somewhat muscular build. He has a rounded feminine face with blond hair that is cut in the style of a bob. He also has large, expressive blue eyes, brown eyebrows, and a slightly upturned nose that is often slightly red. Even when he was young, the naturally curious Armin had a deep fascination with the world beyond the Walls. As a child, he found and studied an illegal book about the outside world that was owned by his grandfather. He told Eren Jaeger, his best friend, about the book and the information that was inside it. Armin was branded a heretic by the other children, for his unusual interest in the outside world, and was frequently picked on. Too timid to defend himself, Armin would often need to rely on his friends (Eren and Mikasa) to protect him from local bullies. This, coupled with his frail physique, was a source of much shame for Armin, leading him to have poor self-esteem and believe himself to be a burden upon others. Because of this, Armin has always been very eager to prove his worth. As a child, he hoped that one day he would be able to consider himself a true equal to his friends. Armin continued to have low self-esteem during his training years and for a short while after graduation. During this time Armin considered himself to be useless and a burden due to his lack of physical strength and physical skill. However, soon after graduation, he came to learn that his mind is an equally valuable asset to the military and that he is not useless or a burden as he can use his brain to help people. Consequently, Armin gradually gains confidence in himself and his abilities. Nonetheless, he can still be hard on himself at times. The fact that he is so willing to sacrifice himself to achieve a goal shows that he still does not value his own life as much as he should. The Church of the Walls (壁教 Wōrukyō?): Nick: Nick, often formally referred to as Minister Nick, is a high standing, devoted member of the Church of the Walls, a religion that worships the Walls and considers them to be holy. Nick is a very tall man and older looking with noticeable wrinkles on his forehead and around his eyes, which have dark circles over them. His hair is high up on his head and is parted to the left, with the sides and back being much shorter. He wears a black cassock with three bands near the top that had the symbols of the Walls. Nick could be characterized by the word extreme. Any attempt to interfere with his mission or the Walls was a sin and considered the worst possible offense in his mind. He never hesitated to make his opinion known and was extremely quick to condemn anyone who disagreed with him. Any viewpoint besides his own is considered sinful and horribly wrong. Around 1800 years before the main events, Ymir Fritz, a young slave of the Eldian people, encountered a mysterious force—a being sometimes depicted as an otherworldly, almost alien presence—that altered her fate forever. Merging with this enigmatic power, Ymir transformed into the very first Titan and became the progenitor of a legacy that would change the course of history. Embraced as the Founding Titan by the ruling Eldian dynasty, she was exploited by King Fritz, who used her abilities to wage brutal wars against Eldia’s enemies and to expand his dominion. In a series of dramatic and horrifying events, upon her death, Ymir’s body was consumed by the king’s daughters, who in turn passed on her Titan-shifting power. This act birthed a peculiar and tragic phenomenon known as the “Curse of Ymir”, which dictates that anyone who inherits this power will live a shortened life span of 13 years. This inception not only established the cycle of Titan power but also set the stage for countless conflicts that stem from its inherent curse and burden. The "source of all living matter" (有機物の起源 Yūkibutsu no Kigen?): The "source of all living matter" is the tentative name attributed to the anomaly which granted Ymir Fritz the Power of the Titans almost two thousand years ago. It was the source of both the Power of the Titans and the abilities of the Founding Titan. The "source of all living matter" took on a very insect-like appearance, being compared to a "shining centipede", albeit with no visible, eyes or mouth, though there appeared to be a mass of feelers on the creature's head. The limbs were continuous with its body, having no apparent segments or joints. The anomaly could vary greatly in size, being somewhere around a meter long when joining with Ymir Fritz but growing to massive proportions. While it is unknown whether or not the anomaly was indeed the origin of all life on Earth, it was evidently capable of dramatically affecting organic life in its immediate vicinity. A tree which stood over the anomaly in ancient times grew to immense proportions compared to those surrounding it. Physical contact between Ymir Fritz and the anomaly caused the creation of the Power of the Titans and subsequent connection of living and dead consciousness in the Eldian race through the paths. It's speculated that the nature of the Power of the Titans, the creation of immense and nearly indestructible bodies and a path to a deathless existence, may have resulted from Ymir Fritz's vulnerability and fear of death. While the anomaly appeared sedentary in nature, it could display great levels of physical initiative when pressured or forced to do so.  occasions. Being the source of the Power of the Titans, the anomaly was able to utilize identical abilities to the giants derived from its existence. Paths (道 Michi?): Paths are channels that connect all Titans and Subjects of Ymir together. The idea of paths came from noticing that the Nine Titans are sent to a random baby among the Subjects of Ymir, regardless of distance or blood relations, if they die without being eaten. This implies that the Subjects of Ymir are all connected by something invisible, and what connects them are called paths. Paths serve as channels for the transportation of several things, such as memories and wills from other Subjects of Ymir, flesh and bones that make up a Titan's body, commands from a Titan's scream, and the power of the Titans. Paths seem to be strengthened by blood relations: memories are transferred far easier between family members. Although paths are invisible in the physical world, they can be seen by entering the world of the paths (道の世界 Michi no Sekai?). There, white soil covers the ground and paths manifest as trails of light in the sky, similar in appearance to an aurora. Time is irrelevant and conflicting there. Paths transcend physical space, and they appear to transcend time as well. Ymir Fritz inhabits the land as a little girl, often carrying a pail of water. She is capable of creating anything out of the earth. She is the cause of Titan transformation and regeneration, as she is the one who molds their bodies whenever the power of the Titans is invoked. Those with royal blood, her descendants, are able to command Ymir Fritz. Ymir's death created the world of the paths after gaining the power of the Titans. Those who inherit the Founding Titan enter the land in order to command Ymir Fritz. When paths cross, the point is known as a "coordinate". Coordinate (座標 Zahyō?): The Founding Titan is the Coordinate where the paths of all Subjects of Ymir and Titans cross. It has the ability to alter the memories of Subjects of Ymir, change the body composition of Subjects of Ymir, transform Subjects of Ymir into Titans (even Colossus Titans), and command all other Titans. The Subjects of Ymir are like a part of the Founding Titan's body, no matter where they are. In the unknown land, the Coordinate is manifested as a giant pillar of light that branches out like a tree. Marley (マーレ Māre?): Marley is a formidable nation in the, situated across the vast ocean from Paradis Island. Originally subjugated by the ancient Eldian Empire, Marley reasserted itself as a major military force when its people revolted and harnessed the mysterious power of the Titans. At the core of its might is the unique ability to transform certain individuals into powerful Titan warriors—a resource that Marley meticulously controls and employs to maintain its regional dominance. This strategic utilization of Titan power not only cements Marley’s status as a superpower but also stokes longstanding tensions between differing factions within the global narrative. Underpinning Marley’s influence is a deeply stratified society and political system. The state’s propaganda machine and rigid hierarchical structure, which includes influential families like the Tyburs, help legitimize its actions on the world stage. While Marley presents itself as modern and technologically advanced, it remains heavily dependent on its ancient Titan legacy—a dual reliance that creates both unparalleled strength and significant vulnerability. Notably, Marley’s official declaration of war against Paradis in the year 854, as well as its oppressive policies toward Eldians within its own borders, underscore the nation’s complex identity as both a beacon of military might and a bastion of historic brutality. While technological development on Paradis Island had been stagnant for a century up until the year 850 due to King Reiss's isolation policies, the other nations of the world had already progressed far beyond it. By the year 854, Marley and other nations reached the modern age and possessed technologies such as photographs, blimps, electricity, steam & diesel-powered transports in civil society. Technological progress was not developed evenly across the world, however, with Marley lagging behind most of its adversaries in at least the area of military technologies as a result of them relying on the Power of the Titans for many wars, and not worrying about their technology. The Marley government has a vast knowledge of the Titans to the extent that they are able to make use of Titan-related technology, as they possess insight into the origin of the Titans. For example, the Marley government are known to create Titan serums to transform the Warriors and Eldian criminals into Titans. An academic discipline known as "Titan biology," headed by Marley's Titan Biology Research Society, was founded in dedication to the research of Titans. It is the Society that put forth the theory that all Subjects of Ymir are connected by unseen paths from which the flesh and bones of Titan are sent to them, and that all the paths cross at a single "coordinate," the Founding Titan. Marley is notorious for its adherence to militarism and colonial expansion. However, the general populace has since lost touch with the reality of war, both due to the abolition of the conscription system in the past and the extensive use of Eldians as rank-and-file troopers. As its only knowledge of war comes from newspaper stories, Marleyan citizens have little concern about the true cost of war. Out of patriotic sentiments, the Marleyans and the Eldians loyal to Marley refer to their country as the "Motherland." The Marleyans built statues to honor Helos, a folk hero who was renowned for slaying the Devil of All Earth during the Great Titan War. He is described in legend as a brave and beautiful man who was unwounded in the struggle against the greatest Titan on earth. A Helos statue is erected in front of the Warrior unit headquarters in Liberio. Marleyan cuisine is varied, consisting of pasta dishes, pizza, as well as seafood such as lobster and clams. The Eldians of Paradis also compliment them for being able to make good wine. Eldian is the national language of Marley and various nations across the world, due to Eldia's expansionism in the past for many centuries. Various accents and dialects exist in Marley; such as the accent found in southern Marley, which is surprisingly also present in an isolated village deep within Paradis Island. Marley is an empire comprised of an enormous continent as well as various oversea territories. Its entire population is unknown, but the main ethnic group are the Marleyans, leading the nation politics, economy, diplomacy and military. There are a considerable number of Eldians, contained in several ghettos around the mainland, and numerous other ethnic groups and nationalities, added into Marley over the past 100 years through military conquest and expansion. Marley is a gigantic empire, stretching over one large continent to the west of Paradis Island, a smaller continent to the south, an entire peninsula to the south east. It also has territories in a western continent, as well as various small islands. This large territory enables Marley to have access to various oceans and various seas, and that may have influenced the nation's culture, since Marleyan cuisine consists of seafood and since the national emblem appears to be a seashell. The Marleyan military acts as the main force of order within Marley's borders as well as the key to their global conquest. Consisting primarily of a navy and an army, a large portion of Marleyan ground forces consists of Eldian troops within the Eldian Unit of the army, led by a Marleyan commander. Within this Eldian Unit is the infamous Warrior Unit, the volunteer Eldian soldiers who strive to inherit the power of the Titans. Marley’s plan to seize the Founding Titan from Eldia is a multifaceted strategy rooted in decades of military, ideological, and political maneuvering. At its core, Marley fears that as long as the Founding Titan remains in Eldian hands—specifically on Paradis Island—it could be used to unleash the terrifying “Rumbling” and upend the global balance of power. The Founding Titan’s unique abilities—to control other Titans, modify Eldian biology, and even alter collective memory—make it the ultimate weapon. Marley’s objective is to wrest this power away to prevent Paradis from using it as an existential trump card, thereby securing Marley’s own supremacy and global influence. To achieve this end, Marley has orchestrated a plan that combines covert operations with overt military engagements. Integral to this effort is their Warrior Unit, a cohort of elite Eldian soldiers indoctrinated to serve Marley’s interests. The warriors being: Reiner Braun, Zeke Yeager, Pieck Finger, Porco Galliard, Gabi Braun and Falco Grice. The Titans are enigmatic, gargantuan creatures whose existence both terrifies and fascinates. They are not natural beings but rather transformed humans—once known as the Subjects of Ymir. This metamorphosis is linked to the ancient figure of Ymir Fritz, whose fateful pact or fusion with an otherworldly force not only birthed the first Titan but also launched a millennia-long cycle of cursed power. Initially, these beings emerged as pure, unthinking monstrosities, driven by an insatiable hunger to devour humans. Their creation was steeped in brutality—a dark legacy of war, oppression, and the desperate measures of a dying empire. Titans are instantly recognizable by their towering, humanoid forms, though their bodies are as distorted as they are intimidating. Their imposing physiques vary dramatically in height—from relatively small aberrations to titanic giants that can loom over entire city walls. One signature trait is their regenerative ability—a power that enables them to recover from wounds that would otherwise be fatal. However, this same regenerative vigor is coupled with a disturbing lack of a full, functional digestive system; many Titans appear to gorge themselves to the point of regurgitation, underscoring the grotesque nature of their existence. In addition to these general characteristics, a select few Titans possess a spark of human intellect. Known as Titan shifters, these individuals can retain their consciousness and strategic thinking while controlling a Titan’s overwhelming power. This duality—the mind of a human harnessing the brute force of a Titan—serves as both a tactical asset and a deeply personal burden for those who bear it. As centuries passed, Ymir’s once singular power was split into distinct aspects, eventually crystallizing into nine unique Titans. Each of these Titans came with a distinct ability—from the brute might of the Colossus and Armored Titans to the more agile and cunning forms like the Jaw and Female Titans, along with the more enigmatic Founding and War Hammer Titans. The Eldian Empire, riding on the back of these monumental powers, grew to become fearsome and expansionist. The ruling class—the descendants of the original royal bloodline that had first embraced Ymir’s power—wielded the Founding Titan exclusively, thus holding the key to controlling Titans and enforcing the merciless “Curse of Ymir.” This era was marked by unspeakable wars and the subjugation of entire civilizations by the might of the Eldian regime. Using pure, uncontrolled Titans as weapons, the empire expanded its influence, often leaving destruction in its wake and sowing the seeds for decades of enmity and strife with the rest of the world. The Nine Titans are far more than mere giant beings—they are storied embodiments of power, legacy, and the eternal struggle for freedom among the Eldians.

  1. Founding Titan (始祖の巨人, Shiso no Kyojin): The Founding Titan holds the extraordinary power to control other Titans, alter the biology and even the memories of Eldians, and shape the very fabric of Eldian history. It is often regarded as the “mother” of all Titan powers, the wellspring from which every other Titan derives.
  2. Attack Titan (進撃の巨人, Shingeki no Kyojin): Revered for its unyielding combat spirit, the Attack Titan is characterized by a fierce, rebellious nature. Notably, it possesses the mysterious ability to access the memories of future inheritors—a power that fuels its drive for freedom and rebellion against oppression.
  3. Armored Titan (鎧の巨人, Yoroi no Kyojin): True to its name, the Armored Titan boasts a thick, nearly impenetrable layer of hardened skin. This natural armor makes it especially suited for direct, head-on confrontations and defensive operations, allowing it to shrug off heavy attacks with brute resilience.
  4. Beast Titan (獣の巨人, Kemono no Kyojin): Distinct in appearance and function, the Beast Titan wields a combination of raw physical power and uncanny control over other Titans. It is renowned for its exceptional throwing capabilities and, depending on its inheritor, may exert a form of command over Titan hordes—a trait that can turn the tide of large-scale battles.
  5. Colossus Titan (超大型巨人, Kyoshin no Kyojin): Towering above all others, the Colossus Titan is known for its immense size and the devastating shockwaves it generates upon transformation. Its colossal stature can obliterate walls and landscapes alike, wreaking havoc on a massive scale.
  6. Female Titan (女型の巨人, Onna no Kyojin): The Female Titan is celebrated for its agility, versatility, and combat finesse. It can harden its skin to bolster its defense and exhibits a keen tactical acumen—appealing traits for both offense and covert operations.
  7. Jaw Titan (顎の巨人, Ago no Kyojin): Characterized by an extraordinarily powerful jaw and high agility, the Jaw Titan excels in rapid, ferocious strikes. Its bite force can obliterate various materials and is capable of dismantling even the sturdiest defenses.
  8. Cart Titan (戦車の巨人, Dachi no Kyojin): Unlike its more combat-specialized counterparts, the Cart Titan emphasizes endurance, mobility, and versatility. Its quadrupedal form grants it exceptional speed and the ability to carry heavy loads, making it ideal for prolonged engagements and support roles on the battlefield.
  9. War Hammer Titan (戦槌の巨人, Senso no Kyojin): Perhaps the most unique of the Nine, the War Hammer Titan can generate weapons and defensive structures from hardened Titan flesh and a crystalline substance. This remarkable versatility allows it to adapt to a vast array of combat situations, both offensively and defensively. With time, shifts in the balance of power led to a dramatic turning point. The once-mighty Eldian hegemony eventually crumbled under its own weight of oppression and exploitation, paving the way for the rise of Marley, a nation that both coveted and despised the power of the Titans. Marley managed to reverse the tide by seizing control of some of the Titan abilities, transforming them into strategic military assets. Marleyan propaganda painted the Eldians as monstrous and cursed, justifying decades of systemic oppression and segregation. This not only led to a re-interpretation and deliberate distortion of history but also laid the ideological groundwork for a cycle of revenge, hate, and inevitable conflict. In this revised narrative, the Eldians were demonized, and their unique heritage was weaponized against them, setting up the modern landscape in which the secret of the Titans is both a blessing and a curse. In the midst of global turmoil and intercontinental warfare, a radical effort was made to spare what remained of humanity. A faction of the Eldian royalty, seeking to atone for their past or perhaps to seek refuge from constant warfare, engineered a new containment strategy: the construction of three enormous walls—named Maria, Rose, and Sheena. Within these colossal barricades, humanity was sheltered from the terrors of the outside world, a world now teeming with both wandering Titans and bitter conflict. The walls became a place of lore and myth in themselves—a sanctum hiding a buried truth. Over the generations, the origins, the very nature of the Titans, and the relentless cycle of hatred were obscured behind layers of myth, distortion, and imposed ignorance. The secrets embedded in the walls were kept hidden even from the citizens, ensuring that the grim realities of the world beyond remained a mystery until a series of fateful events began to unravel them. Paradis Island (パラディ島 Paradi-tō?): Paradis Island is a massive island on which the three Walls are located, and Eldia's last territory. It was just off the coast of Marley and is surrounded by the ocean. Marley used the island in the past as a dumping ground for its Eldian criminals, turning them into Pure Titans as punishment. Paradis Island appears to have a temperate climate, with the northern regions of the land being especially cold, rarely exceeding 30° C on the hottest summer days. However, the coldness of the northern regions of the island are alleviated by the occasional presence of hot springs. While it is unknown what area of Paradis Island the Walls raised by the First King stand on, it is evident that the central region of the Walls is at a higher elevation than the outermost territories. Some regions of the land are home to Titan Forests, where the trees are known to reach as high as 80 meters, possibly due to the unique content of the soil. Paradis Island is also rich with various minerals and natural resources, which made the land a valuable target for the people of Marley over eighty years after the end of the Great Titan War. The firearms used by the military of Paradis Island are based on the flintlock mechanism, where a piece of flint ignites the gunpowder and fires the gun, which must be reloaded after every shot. These come in the form of muskets, pistols, buckshot rifles, hand cannons, and flintlock sniper rifles. The firearm technology has not progressed much as guns were proved ineffective against the Titans. Part of the reason was due to the Military Police First Interior Squad stopping firearm advancements in technology to maintain order within the Walls, with two of the advancements that were suppressed being the development of revolvers and metallic bullet cartridges. The Survey Corps and the Garrison also use flare guns to communicate over long distances. Furthermore, cannons line the top of the Walls. While each one originally had its own track so it could be pushed to the outer edge or the inner edge, tracks were later laid along the entire Wall to connect them all and enabled them to be pushed to different positions. Four years later, the Survey Corps were able to incorporate semiautomatic and bolt action firearms into their arsenal with the covert aid of the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers, while Thunder Spears became standard issue equipment for anti-Titan and anti-fortification warfare. One of the most sophisticated pieces of technology the Eldians of Paradis use is the vertical maneuvering equipment. The advances needed for the system to work include steel wire, compressing gas under pressure derived from iceburst stone, and blades made of ultrahard steel, a substance which can only be manufactured in the blast furnaces of the factory city. Transportation within the Walls is derived primarily from horses. Furthermore, sailless boats guided by pulleys and rails connect some districts by river, such as the boats providing transport between Shiganshina District and Trost District. Other forms of basic technology have been shown to exist within the Walls, such as pocket watches, pulley-based lifts, metallic water pumps, and the printing press. Photography is not something that the people inside the Walls know about. The Walls (壁 Kabe?): The Walls are three large structures located on Paradis Island that guarded the remnants of Eldia. They were built by the 145th King of Eldia, Karl Fritz, a century ago using countless Colossus Titans. They stalled the other nations from attacking Paradis, under the false threat that the King would unleash the Titans inside upon the world if they did so. The Walls reached about 50 meters in height from bottom to top and were incredibly strong in substance, but not indestructible. The Walls were too long to be guarded in their entirety. The tops of the Walls were lined with cannons mounted on rails which could fire on approaching Titans; however, they were not particularly effective due to the Titan's regeneration abilities. To account for this, each Wall had four towns on their periphery known as "districts." As Titans are drawn towards large concentrations of people, humanity could focus its defenses on these districts and repel the Titans more effectively. The districts were considered the worst places to live as they were at greater risk of Titan invasion. Few people know about the Titans within the Walls, or that they were created from said Titans. Minister Nick, the foremost member of a cult which considers the Walls to be holy, knew of the Titans within them but did not reveal any more information - even when threatened with death. It is unknown how commonplace this knowledge is within the Church of the Walls. Wall Maria (ウオール・マリア Wōru Maria?): Wall Maria is the outermost Wall of the human kingdom. Like the other Walls, Wall Maria is approximately 50 meters in height. Wall Rose (ウォール・ローゼ Wōru Rōze?): Wall Rose is the second outermost Wall following Wall Maria. Wall Sheena (ウォール・シーナ Wōru Shīna?): Wall Sheena is the innermost Wall protecting the kingdom where the king used to reside along with other noblemen. The cities of Wall Sheena are protected by the Military Police serving under Rod Reiss at the time. The underground is poorer and more prone to criminal activity. Here, the citizens have been raised to believe that the fortified structures are not only their sanctuary but also a sacred boundary against the monstrous forces of the outside world. The military also known as the Armed Forces of Eldia are a full-time professional armed forces of Eldia on Paradis Island originally trained to deal with the Titans within and beyond the Walls. It was divided into three branches: the Survey Corps, which explores outside human territory to hostile areas in a bid for expansion; the Garrison, which patrols and maintains the Walls, keeping Titans out and acting as the first to engage the Titans if the gate is destroyed; and the Military Police Brigade, the top-ranking soldiers who serve as the personal guards for the king and maintain order within the Walls. Additionally, the Training Corps oversees the education and training of the recruits in order to join one of the aforementioned branches. The Survey Corps was the branch of the Military most actively involved in direct Titan combat, Titan study, human expansion, and outside exploration. They had the best soldiers who are the most skilled in using vertical maneuvering equipment. Despite having little success, they still symbolized the "hope of mankind" with their insignia being known as the "Wings of Freedom." They hoped that someday, their efforts will change the world and they will be able to recover what has been taken away from humanity. The Garrison is the largest of the Military divisions which protects and maintains order within the Walls. Given the fatality rate of the Survey Corps and the limited entry of the Military Police Brigade, most soldiers join the Garrison. As they often have close contact with both Titans and human civilians, they are proficient over a wide variety of tasks such as Titan combat (defensive battles), cannons, security detail, crowd control, and rifle usage. The Military Police Brigade is the most prestigious military sector due to their work, which allows citizens to live safely within the inner Wall and access to abundant resources. Therefore, it has higher authority over other military sectors. However, in reality, it is the most corrupted military sector due to a lack of oversight compared to the other sectors of the military. Due to their misuse and abuse of power, the Military Police Brigade is also at odds with the Garrison and especially with the Survey Corps. Only the top ten alumni from trainee squads can apply for the Military Police Brigade. However, according to the conversation between Hitch Dreyse and Boris Feulner, there are other ways to get in the sector such as fraternization, favoritism, etc. The Training Corps is the branch of the military dedicated to training and educating trainees to become members of the three main military branches. Only the top ten graduates can apply to the Military Police Brigade, giving them the privilege of living in the Inner District. The other graduates can only choose between joining the Survey Corps and the Garrison. Yet beneath the veneer of security, daily life within the Walls is quietly burdened by a duality of existence. On one hand, the populace enjoys a semblance of peace and order, safeguarded by military might and centuries-old traditions. Neighborhoods and districts—each defined by its proximity to the outer barricades—revolve around a constant, subdued vigilance. The upper echelons, enriched by tradition and often benefiting from positions linked to the royal line, reinforce the selective dissemination of history and knowledge. On the other hand, countless Eldians live under an abiding, unspoken awareness that their safety is maintained through strict social control and the deliberate shrouding of their past. Formal myths and censored textbooks hide the grim reality of their ancestry and the cruel truths behind the Walls' creation. The regime inside the Walls, aware of its own vulnerabilities, has institutionalized a culture of obedience and memory suppression. Local leaders, influenced by an almost religious reverence for these great barricades, ensure that the narrative remains one of divine protection—a bastion against the perceived malevolence outside. In this controlled environment, dissent is often met with swift—and mysterious—retributions, reinforcing the notion that true freedom lies only in complacency. Parents instill in their children both pride and an inherent fear: pride in the sanctity of their heritage and fear of venturing beyond the familiar confines of home. The Church of the Walls (壁教 Wōrukyō?): The Church of the walls is a religious organization that considers the Walls to be sacred, with a lot of religious and political power within them. Some of the church's members possess knowledge about the Walls that is hidden from the general public. The church worships the Walls over everything else, believing them to be sacred and untouchable. They worship Wall Rose, Sheena, and Maria, and think that it is their responsibility to protect the Walls from any "impurities," like humans, rails, or Wall-mounted artillery. They have been shown to be uncannily loyal, to the point where they would sacrifice their own lives if it meant the protection of the church's secrets. In addition, they believe the Walls were a gift from God bestowed upon mankind in order to defend them from the Titans. Members of the church are referred to as "Wallists." Among them there are a variety of different people from different places. There are also ministers who represent the Church of the Walls. An unknown number of ministers are involved in deep secrets regarding the Walls, which also includes information regarding the Titans inside the Walls and possibly even the mystery of the Titans. The only notable member of the church seen thus far is Minister Nick, who is eventually murdered by the First Interior Squad, after seemingly revealing some of its secrets.
