The clock had just swallowed another day whole, but in the sterile, fluorescent-lit belly of the office, time felt suspended. Atsushi’s fingers flew across the keyboard, a frantic tap-tap-tap that was the only sound in the vast, empty silence. The glow of the monitor painted his tired face a sickly blue, his eyes gritty as they scanned line after line of data. This wasn’t even his work anymore. The bulk of it belonged to Dazai Osamu, a "favor" he couldn't refuse—not when the man was the reason he had this job, this salary, this fragile foothold in a world that once spat him out. The debt was a chain, and tonight, he was its prisoner.
A sharp rustle from the corridor beyond his door cut through his focus. He froze, mid-keystroke. His heart gave a single, hard thud against his ribs. Just the building settling, he muttered to himself, the words sounding hollow even in his own ears. Or the night cleaners. He forced a slow breath, trying to unravel the sudden knot of tension in his shoulders.
Sixty seconds later, the world exploded with noise.
It was a violent, metallic cacophony right outside his door—the sound of the water cooler being shaken with brutal, mindless force. Bang. Rattle. Clang. Atsushi jolted back in his chair, a cold wave of pure adrenaline crashing through him. This was no settling building. This was something here. His pulse roared in his ears, a frantic drum solo drowning out all thought. For a long, paralyzing moment, he simply stared at the frosted glass of the door, his knuckles white where they gripped the armrests.
Check. You have to check.
The thought was less courage and more a desperate need to shatter the unbearable tension. On trembling legs, he crept forward, the floor cold even through his socks. He inched the door open, the hinge’s sigh deafening in the quiet.
The hallway was empty. Harsh overhead lights hummed, illuminating the neatly lined cubicles and the now-silent water cooler. A shaky breath of relief began to leave his lips—until his eyes caught on the wall beside it.
A shadow. Massive and utterly wrong.
It was cast cleanly on the pale wall, a stark silhouette of something with impossibly broad shoulders and a distorted, elongated shape. But there was nothing—nothing—in the corridor to cast it. No person, no object, just empty space and this... this imprint of something not human. His gaze trailed up the shadow’s form, and his blood turned to ice.
He didn’t scream. Instinct, honed from a lifetime of fear, sealed his throat. In one fluid, panic-driven motion, he slammed the door shut and threw his body back against it, as if his weight could barricade against the impossible. He scrambled to his desk, his breath coming in ragged, silent gasps. He curled into the chair, pulling his knees tight to his chest, wrapping his arms around them. He made himself small, so very small, hoping the darkness of his cubicle would swallow him whole. Don’t see me. Don’t hear me. Just go away. The only sound was the frantic stutter of his own heart and the low hum of his computer, now a morbid vigil light.
Ten minutes. It felt like ten hours. The oppressive silence stretched, thick and expectant. Slowly, muscles protesting with tension, he uncurled. The fear had parched his throat, leaving it rough and aching. He needed water. The logic was absurd, but his body insisted.
With the caution of a mouse under a hawk’s shadow, he peered out again. Empty. The shadow was gone. The cooler stood innocently, a mundane piece of office furniture. He exhaled, a real breath this time, and hurried to it, his steps quick and light. The cold water was a blessing, washing some of the metallic taste of fear from his mouth. He drank greedily, discarded the paper cup in a bin, and almost ran back to the sanctuary of his office, clicking the door shut behind him with a soft, definitive click.
He leaned against it, allowing a fraction of the rigid fear to drain from his spine. It was over. A trick of the light, a stress-induced hallucination. It had to be.
Back at his desk, the glow of the screen was almost comforting. He didn’t see—couldn’t see—the thin, dark seep of unnatural shadow that had slipped across the threshold just before the door closed, now pooling and shifting deep in the room’s darkest corner, patient and watching.
