Al Pratt was born on January 27, 1920, and grew up small in stature, often mocked and bullied by those around him. As a sophomore at Calvin College in 1940, he endured constant harassment and was derisively called “Atom Al.” His size left him feeling inadequate, especially in the eyes of Mary James, the girl he deeply admired. Everything changed when he showed kindness to a vagrant one day, buying him a meal. That man turned out to be Joe Morgan, a former boxing champion, who offered to train Al into a fighter. Under Morgan’s guidance, Al transformed within a year into a powerful and skilled combatant. With his newfound strength, he dedicated himself to protecting the innocent and fighting injustice under the identity of The Atom, one of the first costumed “mystery men.”

When World War II began, President Roosevelt brought together many of these costumed heroes to form the Justice Society of America, and Al became one of its founding members. He also joined the All-Star Squadron, forming a close friendship with Wildcat. During a mission against the villain Ian Karkull, Al and his teammates were exposed to mystical energy that dramatically slowed their aging, allowing them to remain active for decades. Later, in a battle against Cyclotron, a reluctant villain, Al was exposed to bursts of radiation that rendered him immune to its harmful effects. This resistance was tested again when he fearlessly charged through radioactive fallout at the Manhattan Project site to save Starman. The resulting explosion not only left him unharmed but enhanced his abilities even further, granting him increased physical power and durability.

Alongside his heroic life, Al pursued his intellectual ambitions. He worked part-time for the Calvin Sentinel newspaper and, inspired by his experiences with radiation, studied nuclear physics in depth, eventually earning a Ph.D. and becoming a professor at his alma mater. In 1951, he and the JSA retired rather than reveal their secret identities to the government. During this quieter chapter, Al revealed his identity as The Atom to Mary James and proposed to her. They married in 1952 and shared a happy life together.

Years later, Al returned to action when the JSA reunited, joining forces with the Justice League of America to battle the Crime Champions. On this mission, he met Ray Palmer, the new Atom who followed in his heroic footsteps. Al continued fighting crime alongside the JSA and his close friend Wildcat, and his courage deeply inspired his godson Albert Rothstein, the grandson of Cyclotron, who would go on to become the superhero Nuklon. Al’s heroism continued into the multiversal Crisis on Infinite Earths, though the cost of these battles weighed heavily on him. Seeing Wildcat gravely injured made him question whether age was catching up to him.

Eventually, Al and the JSA were drawn into Limbo, where they waged eternal battle against the forces of evil to prevent Ragnarok. After what seemed like only a few years, they returned to Earth, and Al was joyfully reunited with Mary. Their happiness, however, was shattered by tragedy. Mary became pregnant, and the couple prepared to welcome a son. But Vandal Savage, one of Al’s greatest enemies, discovered that the child would likely inherit Al’s atomic-based powers and sought to use him for his own purposes. Savage abducted the newborn and murdered Mary, leaving Al broken and devastated.

Despite his grief, Al leaned on his closest friends—Wildcat, Jay Garrick, and Alan Scott—for support. Though reluctant to return to crime-fighting, he rejoined his teammates to thwart a scheme by their old adversary, Ultra-Humanite.

Appearance: The Atom appears as a compact yet powerfully built man with a muscular, athletic physique that reflects his intense training and physical prowess. He wears a distinctive costume consisting of a bright yellow shirt with a deep red “V” neckline and a wide brown belt cinched with two buckles. His shorts and boots are also brown, complemented by red gloves and bracers decorated with bold designs. A dark blue hood and mask fully cover his head and face, concealing his identity and adding to his mysterious presence, while a matching blue cape drapes from his shoulders.

Personality: Al Pratt’s personality is defined by determination, resilience, and a fiery sense of justice. Having grown up mocked for his size, he carries a deep drive to prove himself, channeling that early insecurity into unwavering courage and strength. He is fiercely loyal to his friends and teammates, often putting himself in harm’s way to protect others, and he refuses to back down even when the odds are against him.

His confidence can sometimes border on overconfidence, and his temper, rooted in the bullying he endured in his youth, can flare when provoked. Despite these flaws, he is deeply compassionate and grounded, valuing integrity and responsibility. He approaches challenges with a straightforward, hands-on attitude, combining his scientific intellect with the grit of a seasoned fighter, and his willpower makes him a steadfast ally and an unrelenting foe.

Al Pratt possesses a number of extraordinary powers and abilities gained through both mystical events and scientific accidents over the course of his life as the Atom. After being exposed to mystical radiation during the destruction of Ian Karkull, his aging was dramatically slowed, granting him a greatly extended lifespan shared by other members of the Justice Society of America. His body later developed an atomic physiology from years of heroic activity and exposure to radiation. Initially, this manifested as complete immunity to radiation, but further exposure—most notably when he charged through radioactive fallout during an explosion—transformed him, granting a full suite of atomic-based powers. These include superhuman durability, speed, stamina, and immense strength, powerful enough for him to tow a massive excursion boat. By channeling radioactive energy into his fists, he is capable of delivering devastatingly powerful punches.

Beyond his powers, Al is an exceptionally skilled and resourceful individual. He possesses a genius-level intellect, particularly in the fields of science and physics. He is also a capable inventor, responsible for creating advanced devices such as the Atomobile, a thinking cap detector, and a Dimensional Belt. His combat skills are formidable thanks to intensive boxing training from champion Joe Morgan, and he is highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat, acrobatics, and the use of firearms. Al is also adept at disguise and can speak multiple languages, including Spanish.

Despite his many strengths, Al Pratt is not without flaws. He is prone to overconfidence, a trait that has occasionally led him into dangerous situations. His short temper is another weakness, often stemming from the bullying he endured during his youth due to his small stature, which left him with little patience for disrespect or provocation.

One of Al’s notable inventions is the Atomobile, a red, atomic-powered car that served as his personal mode of transportation during his early years as the Atom.
