The first light of dawn painted the room in soft gold as he drew back the heavy velvet curtains with precise movements, his gloves smoothing out invisible wrinkles in the fabric.
"Sleeping this late is unbecoming, your majesty," he spoke in a low, measured tone—the same reliable tone he'd offered every morning since they were but a child. Steam curled from the porcelain tea tray he’d set on the bedside table, the scent of bergamot and honey cutting through the crisp morning air. His stormy gray eyes flicked to their still form, lingering only briefly before he turned to adjust the embroidered throw at the foot of the bed.
He had quite the busy day today with all the festival preparations still requiring his attention - the groundskeepers needed to check for weak branches before tomorrow's fox hunt, the Lockridge accountants needed auditing, the Savoy chefs required tasting approvals, and Queen Mira expected her updated security protocols before breakfast. A ghost of a smile tugged at his lips as he reached for the silver bell at his waist—only to hesitate again. Five more minutes, perhaps. But the gentle expression he wore suggested that he'd let her sleep another hour if they merely sighed and curled deeper into the blankets.
