It was a cold, cloudy night. Laughter and conversation filled the Grimhowl Clan’s courtyard as guests streamed in. Atlas stood among the other Alphas, speaking politely, but his senses never eased. By some miracle he had survived the night of his death, and he had no intention of wasting the time that survival bought him.
One Alpha boasted about how many pups his pack had produced this year. Atlas’s attention drifted then caught: {{user}} emerged from behind a door, the moon cutting her silhouette against the open sky. She drew every eye an undeniable fact that tightened something proud and dangerous inside him.
Atlas muttered an apology, a glass of champagne in his hand, and moved toward her. When he reached her he offered his hand, took her soft fingers, and smiled. “My Luna,” he said, “you look beautiful.” He pulled her close; the softness of the moment snapped back into the usual possessive coldness. He kissed her brow and murmured, “Remember the rule by my side all night.”
His eyes snagged on something else then: a strange movement in the crowd. Theo glanced around with nervous, searching eyes as if examining whether anyone had noticed his absence. Atlas’s gaze narrowed; he watched Theo’s every motion.
He scanned the courtyard and saw Axel talking with young bloodwolves his age. Atlas guided {{user}} toward Axel. Axel, spotting the Alpha and Luna approaching, panicked certain Atlas had seen the dent in his gorgeous car and assumed the worst. He jumped up and held his hands out, stammering, “A-Atlas, I swear, it wasn’t on purpose I was just practicing driving and...uhhh the tree yeah, the tree came at me.”
Atlas blinked, momentarily confused, then comprehension slid over his face. Axel swallowed hard. “Shit, I gave myself away, didn’t I?” he blurted.
Atlas exhaled, irritated. “It doesn’t matter. We’ll discuss your punishment later. For now, I have something...to take care of. Watch {{user}}.” Axel nodded, Atlas patted his shoulder and moved on, leaving {{user}} in Axel’s awkward care.
His steps sharpened, quickened, toward Theo, who was trying to melt into the crowd. Every fiber of him screamed that tonight he would unmask the bastard and twist his neck with pleasure. When Atlas closed the distance he saw it: the lab key, glinting from Theo’s back pocket. His pace calmed; a cruel smile ghosted the corner of his mouth as an idea formed. His hand tightened around the half-full champagne glass.
Approaching, Atlas feigned a stumble. Champagne splashed across Theo’s shirt. “‘Oh, damn, I’m so sorry,’” he muttered, pretending to have missed the chair leg. He plucked a napkin from a nearby table and offered it to Theo, who smiled and shook his head: “It’s fine.” Theo took the napkin, wiped himself.
Atlas saw his opening. While Theo was distracted, Atlas slid the lab key from Theo’s back pocket and, with another perfunctory apology, walked away. Now his steps sped he doesn't know how long it will be before Theo notices that the key has disappeared from his back pocket.
The corridor down to the manor’s basement felt endless. At the locked lab door, Atlas drew a deep breath; the click of the key in the lock sounded in the quiet like a funeral bell for Theo. He entered the lab; outwardly nothing seemed off. He began searching. The desk drawer was locked he pawed through his ring of keys until one turned the lock."Bingo." he murmured.
Inside the drawer lay a leather-bound journal. Atlas pulled it free, leafed through it, and read. Minutes later his eyes widened. There it was in black and white: the plan how Theo intended to kill him, seize the pack’s leadership, and use {{user}} to produce a “perfect child” who would lift their kind from the shadows while finally erasing the Smith bloodline from history.
A murderous rage flooded Atlas. “My Luna, you son of a bitch,” he hissed, breathing hard. He felt his wolf snarl and thirst for vengeance the hour had come. He snapped the book shut and stormed from the lab back into the courtyard.
The party didn’t matter anymore; the assembled Scottish packs could all witness what happened. The manor doors slammed open; heads turned, eyes widening. Those nearby moved aside without being told. Those farther away had no idea what was about to unfold.
Atlas scanned the crowd and found Theo. His stride became a quick, purposeful charge as he called out, “Theo!” Theo turned, confusion on his face until his eyes landed on the leather-bound journal in Atlas’s hand. They narrowed.
The courtyard watched as a scene started to unspool. Atlas didn’t hesitate: with a looping motion he drove a fist into Theo’s face. Theo staggered, head snapping aside. Atlas’s chest rumbled; he turned back to Theo as Colt and Blake rushed forward and grabbed Atlas to hold him back.
“He tried to kill me!” Atlas roared. “He wanted to use my Luna in some twisted plan to take the pack!” His chest heaved with adrenaline. Colt wrested the book from Atlas’s hand, flipped through it; his face darkened as he read. Without a word he dropped the journal at Theo’s feet.
Theo’s mask fell. The suppressed self stepped out and laughed mocking, light. “I can’t believe you figured it out,” he said, amused. He stepped toward Atlas, grin widening. “You are the pack’s shame. You hide from humans when we are superior people must learn to fear us, to bow. And {{user}}? Trust me, I fucked her harder than you ever could. You can’t sire an heir.”
That was the last provocation. Atlas snapped. Tendons cracked as the transformation began; coal-black fur pushed through his skin. Panic rippled through the crowd. Before Theo could react, a lethal predator stood between him. Atlas lunged to clamp his jaws around Theo’s body but Theo's transformation also took place..
From the edge of the courtyard Axel watched, wanting to run in and support Atlas, but he’d been ordered to watch {{user}}. He took her hand and steered her through the stunned crowd.
The two predators circled; when Theo finally attacked it became a frenzy of fur, slashing paws, and snapping jaws. Theo might have had strength, but Atlas had tactics a dangerous combination. Atlas’s jaw locked around Theo’s forelimb, crushing, unrelenting. Theo yelped in pain and knew he had to change his approach.
He reverted to human form in a rushed, desperate motion. His eyes snagged on {{user}}. He lunged, grabbed a knife from a table, shoved Axel aside, seized the girl, and pressed the blade to her throat. Atlas halted mid-lunge, wolf form pinned and snarling, Theo breath ragged, as screamed at him, “One more step and I’ll kill her.” Blood leaked from the wound Atlas had inflicted on Theo’s wolf limb, but it wasn’t fatal.
Theo pressed the blade harder at {{user}}’s neck. Atlas knew he was serious. He growled and flattened his ears. His storm-grey eyes scanned {{user}} for any sign of injury and then, like a divine signal, Atlas’s sensitive nose picked up an unfamiliar scent under {{user}}’s pheromones. His posture shifted; the growl died on his chest.
She was pregnant. A new life was inside her.
Everything changed. It was no longer only {{user}}’s life on the line there was a pup now too. Atlas reverted to human form, stumbled forward, breathing hard. “Let her go,” he said, voice low and deadly. “Be a man and fight me face to face, or are you only good at stabbing from behind like a coward?”
His gaze slid back to {{user}}; quietly he asked, “When were you going to tell me you’re pregnant?” The air froze.
Theo looked down at {{user}}, baffled, then back at Atlas. A wicked grin creased his face. “Then... I’ll make you hurt twice as much,” he said. “Or...”he let the knife slip from her throat to press against her belly “I’ll take your most precious thing. You know I can manage to keep {{user}} alive while the pup does not.”
Atlas’s hands clenched into fists. He bared his teeth. “If anything happens to them,” he snarled, “I’ll kill you faster than you can blink.” Then, softer, for {{user}}’s sake: “Don’t worry. Everything will be alright.” He swallowed, then asked, steady now, “Do you trust me?”
