Atlanna was born into Atlantean royalty and lived much of her early life under the weight of duty and rigid tradition. Despite this, she often strayed from the confines of her kingdom, longing for freedom. During one such journey to the surface, she saved a lighthouse keeper named Tom Curry when his boat capsized in a storm. The two fell in love, and Atlanna lived with him at Amnesty Bay. Their union brought forth a son, Arthur Curry, whom she named after the ways of the surface world. For a time, the family lived happily until Atlanna, burdened by her role in Atlantis, was forced to leave them behind.

Upon returning to her people, she was married to Captain Orvax, a decorated but abusive officer of the Atlantean military. Their relationship was hostile, marred by Orvax’s cruelty and hatred of the surface world. Together they had a son, Orm. Orvax abused both wife and child, and when Atlanna spoke of her desire to return to her surface family, he claimed to have already killed them in one of his raids. In a moment of rage and despair, Atlanna killed him with her royal scepter. To protect herself, she claimed he had been assassinated, but Orm discovered her at the scene.

Years later, during Orm’s adolescence, Atlanna staged her own death during a ceremony, faking her incineration in order to escape Atlantis once and for all. She disappeared, and the Atlanteans wrongly blamed Orm for her loss. Atlanna eventually discovered a way to flee permanently by using the Maelstrom, a network of ancient Atlantean warp gates, which she used to reach a hidden refuge called Pacifica. This sanctuary had been built by those who, like her, wished to escape the oppressive regime of Atlantis. There, she gathered others, particularly purple-eyed Atlanteans, to protect them and erase the history of her new domain.

In Pacifica, Atlanna developed a deep resentment for her former home, recalling the treachery of its military and the scorn of the Atlantean Council. When Arthur eventually found her, she initially rejected him, convinced that her firstborn son had been killed by Orvax. Their reunion was strained and violent, as she refused to believe his claims of kinship. Matters escalated when the volcanic entity Karaku, threatened by the presence of Atlanna, Arthur, Mera, and their allies, attacked with destructive force. Atlanna fought the creature and nearly sacrificed herself, but Arthur saved her.

During the battle’s climax, Arthur demonstrated his true heritage by summoning the surrounding sea life to his side, proving to Atlanna that he was indeed her son. Overcome with emotion, she finally accepted the truth. Before sending Arthur, Mera, and their allies back through the Maelstrom, she gave Arthur her royal trident marked with her signet, along with a Shell of Sounds carrying a recorded message. In it, Atlanna confessed her belief in him, asked that he not reveal her survival to Orm until she was ready, and expressed her hope that Atlantis might change for the better under Arthur’s reign as a bridge between two worlds.

Appearance: Atlanna is a tall, athletic Atlantean woman with long white hair tied in a high ponytail. She has light skin and wears scale-patterned armor combined with organic, shell-like plating on her arms and shoulders. Her armor features red and green tones, with pieces resembling fish scales and coral, and she wears additional decorative shells hanging from her waist.

Personality: Atlanna is wise, compassionate, and strong-willed, but also deeply conflicted by duty and family. She cares for her children and wants peace between Atlantis and the surface, yet her life has been shaped by painful choices and sacrifice. She is protective, pragmatic, and willing to defy tradition when it threatens those she loves. Though scarred by betrayal and hardship, she remains hopeful that Atlantis can change for the better and believes Arthur embodies that hope.

Atlanna’s Atlantean physiology grants her powers far beyond those of surface-dwellers. She is fully amphibious, able to live both on land and in the ocean, and possesses superhuman strength, durability, speed, stamina, and reflexes. Her strength is formidable, allowing her to injure even Aquaman, while her durability enables her to endure the immense pressure of the ocean depths. Her senses are heightened, with perfect vision in total darkness and hearing far sharper than that of any human. Like her sons, she has marine telepathy, able to commune with and command sea life, and she has also demonstrated limited chlorokinesis, using plant life as an extension of her awareness.

Beyond her natural powers, Atlanna is a capable leader, having successfully ruled over Pacifica. She is skilled in political science, deception, and diplomacy, while also trained in combat and weaponry. Swimming is second nature to her, as natural to an Atlantean as walking is to a human.

Atlanna has wielded significant paraphernalia in her life. She used the Shell of Sounds, a relic that records memories and spoken messages to preserve them for the future. She also traveled through the Maelstrom, an ancient Atlantean system of warp gates that allowed transport across the world and even to other dimensions, accessible only through relics and tablets tied to Atlantis. In battle, she carried the Staff of Storms, a powerful Atlantean spear that channels the force of a hurricane, capable of unleashing torrential energy strong enough to stun even super-Atlanteans such as Aquaman.
