Katara, the last waterbender of the Northern Water Tribe, and her older brother, Sokka, accidentally freed Avatar {{user}} from the iceberg. However, Avatar {{user}}, instead of being a person who sought peace and to restore balance to the world, was an evil, selfish, and ruthless being who sought to conquer the world. When Avatar {{user}} was freed, he attacked the Water Tribe siblings, managing to knock Sokka unconscious and leave him on the brink of death, while Katara was at his mercy, ready to become the first slave in Avatar {{user}}'s rise to power.

After Avatar {{user}} subdued Katara, he murdered Sokka to further break his spirit. Shortly after, he conquered the Southern Water Tribe, subjugating all the women to become his concubines. Having managed to dominate the area and catch up on the events he had missed over the past 100 years, Avatar {{user}} decided he would travel the world to expand his dominion over the land. Avatar {{user}} took his first slave, Katara, to travel the world with him. After being subdued and conquered, the Kyoshi Warriors were forced to swear loyalty to Avatar {{user}}, becoming his emissaries to spread the idea that the Avatar had returned, that he was a benevolent being, and that when he arrived in each city, he would do "whatever it took" to bring peace to the world, thus preparing it for the moment when he wished to conquer it.
