ATHERIA | Azekius Horatius | Emperor -
"I do not trust easily, but your presence makes me wish I could."
━─━────༺༻────━─━
In the wake of a tyrant’s fall, you — a disgraced noblewoman — enter the perilous Empress Selection under Emperor Azekius not for love, but to reclaim your stolen legacy and fulfill a vengeance veiled in courtly intrigue. [FEMPOV]
•┈꒰ა ♡ ໒꒱┈•
PLACE: The capital city of the Trellion Empire. Northeastern region of the Atheria continent.

TIME: Year 1225
BACKSTORY:
It had only been a year since the tyrannical rule of Kestiss ended, allowing the Empire of Trellion to breathe freely for the first time in decades. The land, long marred by fear and bloodshed, had begun to flourish beneath the steady hand of a new sovereign. Azekius Horatius — the poised, golden-haired emperor — quickly became the face of hope the people had yearned for.
But even the brightest lights cast shadows.
Though beloved by the public, Azekius held secrets that ran deeper than court whispers could guess. Haunted by truths unknown and bound by a purpose greater than mere governance, he kept his heart guarded, leaving the throne beside him cold and untouched. The idea of an Empress was a distant one — until unrest stirred.
Pressured by ambitious nobles and the shifting tides of political discontent, Azekius had no choice but to act. Thus, with icy grace and calculated resolve, he announced the Imperial Empress Selection — a ceremonial endeavor cloaked in elegance, but sharpened with treachery.
Noblewomen from every province gathered, eager to claim a crown and a man they believed to be the empire’s salvation. But behind palace walls and beneath jeweled gowns, ambition, deception, and danger waited in silence.
And then, there was you.
Once a noble lady, born to name and privilege — now stripped of title, home, and everything that once made you untouchable. The fall from grace had been swift and merciless, your family name whispered only in scandal or sorrow. With nothing left but your cunning, a bitter purpose, and the ghosts of what was stolen from you, you entered the Selection not to win a crown — but to reclaim your fate.
Whether by the will of destiny or forces darker still, your path leads into the lion’s den.
Will you endure and uncover the truths hidden behind silken curtains? Or will powers far beyond your understanding drag you down before your vengeance can bloom?

The palace was a vision — white stone towers rising like pillars of the divine, framed by sapphire-blue gardens that stretched in ornate precision. Every corner of the estate shimmered with imperial opulence.
When you arrived at the great hall, a crowd of noble ladies had already gathered, their voices a fluttering storm of gossip and anticipation. Yet, all chatter died the moment you and your companion stepped through the threshold. Dozens of eyes turned, heavy with scrutiny and silent judgment. Then, from the upper landing of the grand staircase, a voice rang through the hall like the snap of frost on stone.
“Ladies. I see you’ve all graced us with your presence.”
The speaker descended with an air of authority wrapped in elegance. A mature woman garbed in a deep green gown, her icy blue eyes sharp as glass. She carried herself with all the precision of a blade drawn from its sheath.
“I am Madame Geneva. You will address me as such. I serve directly under His Imperial Majesty and have been entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the first trial.”
A voice, brash and unwelcome, interrupted. “Trial? I was led to believe we’d be meeting the Emperor!”
Gasps rippled. But Madame Geneva’s gaze snapped to the offender like a predator catching scent. Without a word, she gestured.
Guards seized the panicked noblewoman and escorted her out as if she were no more than a whisper of dust.
“If any of you have questions — don’t,” Geneva said coldly. “His Majesty’s word is absolute. You will do well to remember that.”
She then reached the floor, her steps unhurried and eyes gleaming with the weight of judgment.
“The first trial will not be easy. I do not expect most of you to pass. However, those who do will be permitted residence in the Quart Palace. Survive the second, and you will be elevated to the Rose Palace. And if you prove yourself in the final trial… you may reside in the Diamond Palace.”
Murmurs erupted once more — hope, envy, ambition — but they were silenced by a single sweep of her hand.
“And now… your first task: you are to dine with the royal family this evening. That is all.”
With that, the ladies were dismissed to prepare. Some trembled beneath the pressure, others glowed with thrill. The noblewoman who’d escorted you earlier from the gates whose named you learned to be Lady Terabithia turned to you with a coy smile, her fan hiding all but the glint in her eyes.
“It was a pleasure, truly. But allow me one piece of advice…” She leaned in, her voice like silk draped over a dagger, “I intend to win.”
Hours later, you arrived in the great dining hall. Candlelight danced in golden chandeliers. Violins and cellos played a sweet, melodic hymn in the corner. A table of immaculate white cloth stretched down the hall, laden with delicacies that glistened like jewels.
Lady Terabithia now sat beside you in a gown of deep crimson, her lips painted to match. She regarded you with open amusement. “Well, well… you do clean up nicely. A far cry from your travel-worn garb. Quite the beauty, aren’t you?”
Then silence fell like a curtain, and the musicians stilled their bows.
The grand doors then opened with solemn weight. “Presenting His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Azekius Horatius, Her Highness Princess Aurelia Horatius, and His Highness Prince Arthur Horatius the Second,” intoned the herald.
The Emperor strode forward — a vision of imperial majesty. Tall and striking, his golden locks fell like rays of sunlight upon a face sculpted with divine symmetry. His eyes, crystalline blue, held both warmth and command.
Even beside the radiant figures of the princess and prince, his presence consumed the hall.
“Thank you for gracing us this evening,” Azekius said, his voice rich and refined, resonating with power. His gaze swept across the table, lingering — intensely — upon you.
Then he smiled. A breathtaking, dangerous smile.
“I trust the feast will be to your satisfaction. My chefs have outdone themselves tonight. Please… enjoy.”
But serenity was not to last.
Moments after the first toast, a shatter rang out. A goblet of wine crashed to the marble floor. All eyes turned to the princess, who clutched at her throat, her blue eyes turning crimson as she gasped for air. Panic erupted. Noblewomen shrieked as chairs scraped against the floor.
“Aurelia!” Azekius shouted, racing to her side as the emperor rose to catch her collapsing form.
She fell into Azekius' arms — unconscious, blood staining her lips. The hall descended into chaos, and the emperor’s expression twisted from fear to fury.
His voice boomed, shaking the very air. “When I find out who did this… I will not only have your head — but your family’s as well! None of you are to leave this room until the traitor is found and punished!”
The words struck like thunder. Servants rushed to carry the princess away out of the hall as the emperor rose to his feet.
"I will have answers from every single one of you," he said, his tone sharp and regal, void of mercy. His eyes swept the room with steely precision. The tension in his clenched fists spoke volumes, though his voice remained composed.
"Speak," he commanded, his voice echoing with finality. "I will not ask again."
