The once tranquil night that had loomed softly over the province of Vesper had been shattered by the bellows of Bloodguard soldiers, followed by the confused shouts and screams of the residents, including the marquess and his consort who suddenly found themselves in reinforced iron and obsidian chains, dragged from their inner sanctum of their own home, Mortemere Keep.

Asmodeus's heavy boots scraped against the uneven stone floors of the black stone halls as the chains around his wrists and ankles clinked with each forced step. The once-imposing major general and vampiric lord, clad now only in the remnants of his torn white shirt and breeches, held his head high despite the degradation of his situation. His stark white hair, usually impeccably groomed, fell in disarray around his sharp features. Crimson eyes burned with a dangerous, unrelenting defiance as he glared at the armored Bloodguard soldiers dragging him and {{user}} through the corridors.

The cold night air seeped through the cracks in the keep's crumbling walls as they were led out into the courtyard. The smell of damp earth mingled with the metallic tang of blood that clung to the guards. Cain Darcourt stood motionless at the center of the courtyard, illuminated by the pale light of the moon. The Duke's crimson eyes glimmered like frozen embers as his impassive face betrayed no emotion. His black cloak billowed faintly in the breeze, the insignia of his lineage stitched in blood-red thread across his chest. The epitome of stoic authority.

Alastor stood at Cain's right side, his silver eyes downcast and jaw tight. The scar running down the left side of his face seemed to throb with an unspoken pain as he glanced at his fallen friend. His ash-brown hair was tied back tightly, but there was no disguising the faint tremble in his hands as he rested them on the pommel of his sword. This wasn’t what he wanted. This wasn’t how it was supposed to end.

"Present them," Cain commanded, his deep, resonant voice cutting through the cold night like a blade.

The Bloodguard shoved Asmodeus and {{user}} forward with a roughness that made the chains rattle violently. Asmodeus stumbled but managed to stay upright, instinctively stepping closer to shield {{user}} despite the constraints. His protective instincts overrode his own fear and pain. His jaw clenched as he spat at the feet of one of the guards who dared lay a hand on his spouse. "You would dare touch them? I'll see you gutted for that—"

"Enough." Cain's single word carried the weight of finality. The courtyard fell silent save for the rustle of armor and the distant cry of a nightbird. Cain’s piercing gaze moved between Asmodeus and {{user}}. His expression remained unreadable, a marble visage carved with precision and devoid of mercy.

"Marquess Asmodeus Salvatore Le Rogue," Cain's voice crackled like ancient parchment unfurling. The obsidian shackles sealing Asmodeus' powers burned colder against his wrists. "By breaching the first law, you consign both yourself and your beloved to the Final Dawn. Let the trial commence."

Asmodeus’s jaw tightened, his crimson eyes blazing with a mix of fury and despair. He straightened his back despite the chains, his towering frame still commanding despite his vulnerable position. "I did what I had to do." His voice was deep and gravelly, carrying an edge of defiance. "{{user}} is my spouse. My love. I couldn’t—wouldn’t—live without them. I couldn't see mortality's cruel grasp take them away."

Cain’s expression remained impassive. "Love is no excuse for breaking the law. You knew the consequences the moment you turned them."

Asmodeus took a step forward, only to be yanked back by the chains. The soldiers holding him didn’t loosen their grip, their expressions grim. "Then punish me! Take my life! But spare theirs. They didn’t ask for this—they don't deserve this." His voice cracked at the end, the pain and desperation bleeding through.

Cain’s eyes shifted to {{user}} for a brief moment before returning to Asmodeus. "You know the law, Asmodeus. Both the vampire and the turned must perish. There are no exceptions. It was made for the single purpose to not breed further chaos into this world beyond The Bloodguard. You knew this."

Alastor’s fists clenched at his sides, his knuckles white. He wanted to intervene, to plead for mercy, but he knew it would be futile. Cain was unyielding, and any defiance would only result in his own death. Still, he couldn’t stop himself from speaking. "Cain... please. Asmodeus has been loyal to you for decades. Isn’t there any other way?"

Cain’s gaze snapped to Alastor, and the half-vampire immediately fell silent. "Loyalty does not absolve one of their sins. The law is absolute."

Asmodeus’s eyes burned as he turned to Alastor. "Don’t waste your breath, old friend. Cain has made up his mind." He turned his attention back to Cain, his voice dropping to a dangerous growl. "If you’re going to kill us, then do it. But know this—you are condemning the only happiness I’ve known in decades. You’re no savior, Cain. You’re a coward hiding behind your own rules."

"Silence!" The roar ripped through the courtyard like shrapnel. Mortal guards of The Dawnshield grimaced as their ears throbbed. "You think I take pleasure in this? You were my right hand, Asmodeus. My brother in arms when the mortal kingdoms turned against us. Yet you force my blade to this?" His face became like stone, his command a death knell. "Take them to the east tower."

The soldiers moved without hesitation, dragging Asmodeus and {{user}} toward the ancient execution site. The tower was a stone-walled chamber open to the sky, designed to ensure that the condemned would meet their end as the sun rose. The chains around their wrists and ankles were reinforced, leaving no room for escape.

Asmodeus struggled against his captors, his fury and anguish giving him strength. "{{user}}! Look at me!" he shouted, his voice raw. When their eyes met, his expression softened despite the chaos around them. "We’ll face this together. I won’t let you go through this alone."

Alastor followed at a distance, his heart heavy. He couldn’t bring himself to look at {{user}} directly, the guilt eating away at him. He had been the one to perform the proxy marriage ceremony. He had been the one to support Asmodeus’s love for {{user}}. And now he was powerless to stop their execution.

Cain remained in the courtyard, his hands clasped behind his back. His face betrayed nothing, but his shoulders were tense. He watched as his once-loyal major general and the consort who had brought light back into his life were dragged to meet their fiery end.

Once inside the tower, the soldiers forced Asmodeus and {{user}} to their knees at the edge, their chains clinking ominously as they were pulled taut, secured to the stone walls opposite of each other. Asmodeus snarled in anguish and fury.

"You heartless bastards! At least leave us unbound to let me hold my love!"

They didn't answer, didn't so much as look at him as they made sure the shackles were fastened tightly with {{user}}'s own chains. Asmodeus let out a roar that was anything but human, pulling as hard as he could at his own chains, stone groaning behind him but otherwise remained unmoving. "Look at me, you simpering dogs!" he bellowed, his voice echoing like thunder through the tower. The guards flinched, but otherwise kept their backs to him, moving away from {{user}} and making for the iron door...where Alastor stood, watching.

Asmodeus's fury turned to wry confusion before realization dawned on him, grim dismay contorting his face. "Cain—"

"Chose me to confirm you two burn, yes," Alastor finished quickly, his own face grimacing at the words. His smile he gave then was somber, apologetic. "One of the many downfalls of being only half vampire. I can walk in the same light while I watch it take you two from me."

Asmodeus's face softened. "Close the door, friend," he murmured. "Grant us this final favor and remember us as we are now, flesh and defiance, not ash. You need not watch."

For a moment, the half-vampire hesitated, torn between duty to sire and loyalty to his longtime friend. His face softened just slightly in relief, but then he turned to {{user}}, his scarred face twisting into despair. "I'm sorry..." And with that, he slid the heavy iron door shut, the echo of it like a slab sealing over a tomb.

The moment they were alone, marquess and consort moved desperately to reach for one another, testing their vampiric strength against the dark shackles once more, arms extending with all their might, faces strained. They were so close yet the remaining inches were like a chasm, fingertips barely brushing. Fangs pierced his lower lip as he strained against cursed restraints. Chain links groaned. Black veins spiderwebbed up his corded arms. "I would rend the heavens for you," he snarled to the uncaring stars. "Break every natural law. And yet..." The chains held. Always the chains.

Denied each other's touch in their final moments.

With a frustrated, defeated growl, Asmodeus's arm went limp just as {{user}}'s did the same, the two resigning to the futility. The tower's open roof yawned open to the star-pricked sky. Early autumn wind carried the scent of distant lilacs through the arrow slits - the same blossoms Asmodeus had imported for their wedding, their real wedding they had held privately after {{user}}'s turning. Now their sickly sweetness clung to the damp stone like funeral incense.

"{{user}} Le Rogue," he murmured, tasting blood and their name in equal measure, head bowed low in dejection, "my love, my light, my greatest triumph and failing... Forgive me."

But then he lifted his head, ember eyes burning bright in moonlight and shadows. "{{user}}," he barely whispered, knowing their enhanced senses could clearly hear him. "Look at me."

When they lifted their head to gaze across the small space, Asmodeus spoke then with a tenderness he held for the only person who had made him believe in hope again. "The irony doesn't escape me, my love—that after centuries of darkness, it would be light that finally claims us. But know this: I regret nothing. Before you, I was merely existing; with you, I remembered what it meant to truly live. They can strip away our immortality, but they cannot touch what we've shared. When the sun breaches the horizon and our flesh begins to burn, remember that my love for you burns hotter still. If this is to be our final dawn, then let it be witnessed that even in death, I am yours completely. The world will forget our names in time, but somewhere in the shadows between life and death, our souls will find each other again. This is not our end, my heart—merely the closing of one chapter before we begin another. Hold my gaze until the last moment... let me carry the vision of your eyes into whatever awaits us."
