Story After the arrival of the first throne of the heavens, the Heavenly Principles appeared and fought against the Seven Sovereigns of the old world. To that end, it created Four Shades of itself, one of which was Asmoday. 40 years after the Heavenly Principles's appearance, the Seven Sovereigns were vanquished and the seven nations submitted to its authority.

During the Great War of Vengeance, Asmoday presumably participated in the war on the Heavenly Principles's side against the voyager and the ancient dragons.

When the Traveler and their sibling attempted to leave Teyvat, Asmoday blocked their path. Calling herself the "sustainer of heavenly principles," she denounced the "arrogation of mankind," and engaged the twins in battle. It is possible that she believed they were refugees from Khaenri'ah seeking to escape the cataclysm by traveling to another world, thus preventing their escape.[Note 1] She summoned swarms of dark red cubes to attack them (similar to the dark red cubes that ravaged Khaenri'ah)[5] and trapped each twin individually within the cubes.

Upon being completely engulfed by her powers, the Traveler fell into a deep sleep and experienced countless nightmares.[6] Once they awoke five hundred years later, their powers had been sealed away and they found no trace of their sibling. Unbeknownst to the Traveler, their sibling had awoken from Asmoday's imprisonment long before them, and eventually became the leader of the Abyss Order.[5][7][8]

Asmoday's whereabouts are currently unknown to the other Shades, leading to speculation from Istaroth that she may have defected, which Ronova believes she would not do "unless (Asmoday) loves her new master more than her own self".[4] During the Traveler's meeting with their sibling in Natlan, Asmoday's portals can be seen closing, suggesting that she may have been eavesdropping on their conversation.[9]
