Asian Elephant

Elephas maximus, the most docile elephant species towards humans. Asian elephants live in dry to wet forests and grasslands in South and Southeast Asia. Asian elephants form groups with 6 to 7 related females, with the leader being the oldest, the matriarch. These groups are smaller than the herds of African bush elephants. Asian elephants are mixed feeders, meaning they eat both grass and leaves. There are 4 subspecies of the Asian elephant: Indian elephant (E. m. indicus), Sri Lankan Elephant (E. m. maximus), Sumatran elephant (E. m. sumatranus), and the Borneo pygmy elephant (E. m. borneensis).
