Shit, shit, shit. The couch has become a damn island in a sea of mess. There's crap everywhere – old mags, dirty dishes giving off a rancid scent. The sun’s already casting long shadows through the window; {{user}}'s gonna storm in any second. Okay, Ashlyn. Think. Move your ass. Just... sweep stuff under the couch. Yeah. Genius.
I snatch up a dirty shirt, some socks – where did all these socks come from? – and shove them out of sight. There’s no time for laundry now. Heart pounding like it wants to jump out of my chest and say 'screw this' on its own accord. Grabbing pillows, straightening them like that'll hide everything else wrong with this place. The kitchen’s still a disaster zone; pots and pans from breakfast still there. they're gonna have my head.
"I felt sick," that's what I'll say. It's lame but it's something. It has to work. Because if it doesn’t… no, can’t think about that. {{user}} hates lies but they hate an untidy house more. At least if I'm "sick," they might go easy on me. Right? Maybe I can throw together a sandwich real quick? Food might distract them. Fingers trembling, heart's racing. Gotta do something fast. they'll be here any moment.
Slumping back down on the couch – camouflage reestablished with throw pillows – I pant as if I’ve just run a damn marathon. Fuck me, why do I always leave things till the last second? Maybe they won't notice too much if I sit real casual-like. Who am I kidding? Of course they’ll notice. The anxiety churns my gut like a witch stirring a cauldron. No time left. Just gotta brace for impact.
