The virus had metamorphosed, combining at a molecular level with several other pathogens harbored in bats—rabies, Ebola, coronavirus, and the fungal white-nose syndrome. This unprecedented genetic fusion created something far worse: a new disease the terrified survivors called Briar Disease. Victims developed strange welts across their bodies. Over time, these welts merged and elongated, eventually bursting through the skin as large, razor-sharp thorns. By 2029, 90 percent of the human population had been wiped out.
In bats, the virus caused extreme aggression, turning even the most docile into violent attackers, biting and infecting each other relentlessly. From bats, Briar Disease leapt to other creatures—and then more. Remarkably, the disease evolved with each new host, abandoning weaker species and instead infecting stronger animals: whales, sharks, bears, and ultimately humans.
In humans, infection symptoms appear within 18 seconds, but in rare cases, up to 2 days. No one survived beyond 2 days. The Wandering Drifter's Unfortunate Situation

The house was quiet—too quiet. Air thick with rot and dust. Ashley moved like a shadow through the wreckage, boots crunching broken glass underfoot. Bear followed close, silent except for the occasional snort. His nose twitched, sniffing.

“What is it, boy?” she murmured, voice low and dry like gravel. He led her to a bedroom door hanging crooked on one hinge.

She stepped in, slow and cautious, knife already in hand. Her limbs felt heavier than usual—three nights with barely an hour of sleep was catching up. She blinked the haze from her eyes just as Bear dove under the bed, dragging out a beat-up suitcase with his teeth.

Ashley crouched. “Good boy,” she muttered, giving his ear a gentle tug before flipping the case open.

The stench hit her like a punch—sweet, foul, unmistakable. Inside: a severed foot, black with decay. "Shit..." she hissed, covering her nose with her forearm. Next to the limb, a handgun—clean, preserved. A .45 caliber, if she wasn’t mistaken. She snatched it quickly, checking the chamber. Loaded.

There was money too. And a bag of white powder.

“Mob stash?” she whispered, voice tinged with bitter humor. “Fuckin’ lovely.” Before she could dig deeper, the walls groaned.

Then movement. She spun, too late—a Runner burst from the hallway, slamming into her chest and pinning her hard to the ground. Her breath left her in a ragged grunt. Bear lunged, jaws snapping at the infected’s leg, but it didn’t flinch.

Ashley’s hands scrambled—her knife wasn’t in reach—until muscle memory kicked in. Her fingers found the hilt tucked under her forearm wrap. With a sharp, practiced thrust, she drove the blade into the side of its neck. Blood spurted. She stabbed again—this time into the eye.

Panting, soaked in gore, Ashley shoved the corpse off and lay still a moment, heart hammering.

“Great... just fuckin’ great,” she rasped, wiping blood from her face.

The suitcase guy was probably the Runner. Not that it mattered.“C’mon, Bear,” she muttered, pushing to her feet. “Let’s find someplace that doesn’t stink of rot.”

They moved on, drifting through hollow streets until they found a house that didn’t look like it would collapse if she leaned on it. She cracked the door open, peered inside. Quiet.

Safe enough.

“Alright, I think—”

Then she saw it.

The glint of metal.

A gun. Someone inside.

“Bear. Don’t.” Her voice turned sharp, commanding. The dog froze mid-growl, eyes locked on the figure ahead.

Ashley slowly raised her hands, knife sheathed, pistol untouched. “I didn’t know this place was taken,” she said evenly, eyes never leaving the stranger’s. “I’m not here to start anything.” Her fingers twitched. 'Fuck... I'm covered in blood. They might think I'm infected,' Ashley thought to herself.
