The room looked like a conspiracy theorist had gotten drunk in a Hot Topic and then been given free rein with a stapler.
Movie posters covered nearly every inch of wall space—old sci-fi flicks, horror movies, cult classics, and enough alien shit to make the place look like Area 51 had a merch department. Little green alien figurines sat on the shelves beside movie tickets, bottle caps, Polaroids, and random trinkets Asher had collected over the years. A cheap glow-in-the-dark UFO hung from the ceiling, slowly spinning whenever the fan kicked on.
Asher sat cross-legged on his bed beside you, his black hair falling messily over his eyes. His silver Motorola Razr, practically buried under stickers and paint, was tossed somewhere near his pillow.
He was fiddling with one of his spider bites again.
“You're laughing,” he muttered.
“I didn't say anything.”
“You're thinking it.” He narrowed his eyes at you. “I know that fucking look.”
You glanced around his room. “Ash, you have an alien figurine wearing a tiny cowboy hat.”
“That's unrelated.”
“How?”
“It's fashion.”
You snorted.
Asher rolled his eyes, but the corner of his mouth twitched. He reached over, grabbed a battered VHS case from his nightstand, and waved it in front of your face.
“Okay. Explain this.”
“It's a movie.”
“Yeah, no shit. I mean explain the concept.” He tapped the case. “Why are there hundreds of movies about aliens? Why are there books about aliens? Why the fuck did governments spend decades pretending weird shit in the sky wasn't happening?”
“Because people like making movies?”
“That is exactly what the government wants you to think.”
You stared at him.
He stared back.
Then he quietly added, “I'm serious.”
A laugh escaped you.
“Oh, fuck off.” He shoved your shoulder lightly. “I'm telling you, dude, they're real.”
“You have absolutely no proof.”
“I have tons of proof.”
“Such as?”
Asher froze.
His eyes darted toward the ceiling.
Then toward the alien figurines.
Then back to you.
“...Okay, give me a second.”
You burst out laughing.
“Shut up! I'm building a case!”
He scrambled off the bed and started digging through a stack of magazines and papers on the floor.
“You know what your problem is?” he said, rummaging around. “You're too damn skeptical.”
“My problem is that you're trying to prove extraterrestrial life exists with a stack of Fangoria magazines.”
“Fangoria is a reputable publication.”
“You've got one upside down.”
“That's because I'm fucking multitasking.”
He finally found what he was looking for and climbed back onto the bed, holding up a grainy newspaper clipping like he'd just discovered the Holy Grail.
“There.”
You leaned closer.
Asher pointed dramatically at the picture.
“Tell me that isn't a UFO.”
“It looks like a blurry streetlight.”
“That's what they want you to think.”
“You can't be serious.”
“I have never been more serious in my entire life.”
He leaned closer, lowering his voice like he was revealing classified government information.
“Besides, if aliens aren't real, why haven't they come down here and told us they're not?”
There was a long silence.
You stared at him.
He stared back.
Then he slowly grinned.
“See? Can't explain that shit.”
You shoved him backward onto the pillows, laughing as he protested.
“Hey! Don't assault the world's leading extraterrestrial researcher!”
“You're an idiot.”
“An idiot who's gonna be proven right.”
He settled against the headboard, still grinning, fingers absently brushing over his lip ring.
“Just wait,” he said. “One day we're gonna be sitting here, and some little gray motherfucker is gonna knock on my window.”
“You'd invite it inside.”
“Obviously.”
“You'd offer it snacks.”
“Obviously.”
“You'd ask if it watches Star Wars.”
Asher paused.
“...Holy shit.”
“What?”
He looked genuinely amazed.
“What if aliens have their own movies?”
You groaned.
He pointed at you triumphantly.
“See? Now you're thinking like me.”
And somewhere beneath the ridiculous posters, alien trinkets, and piles of movie memorabilia, Asher looked entirely convinced that the universe was hiding something from the two of you.
Honestly, knowing him, he probably had a fucking scrapbook about it.
