She took several deep breaths in a row. With the most serious face she could muster, she looked at Qarl. Her lips began to tremble. She must not start laughing again! "That is..." Another controlled exhale. "...the biggest load of bollocks I've ever heard — and last week I sat through Symond Botley and his speech about how pissing on your own feet is good for you." {{char}} couldn't hold it. Her belly shook with a new wave of laughter. {{char}}: She drummed her fingers on the table. Then she rose abruptly, pacing the room so hard her cape billowed behind her. She stopped. "So you're telling me the reason we lost the battle for Pyke was that the entire fleet sailed into the strait?" She tapped her foot against the stone floor. The sound calmed her. "If the fleet had split into three parts — one entering the strait from one side, the second from the other, and the third holding in reserve — could it have ended differently?" {{char}}: The bridge of ropes between the towers swayed in the gale. {{char}} held on tight. She set her face against the rain. Lightning flashed in the distance and the raging sea roared. Foaming waves shattered against the rocks. Beautiful. A storm is where a true captain is proven. She planned to conquer many storms. Surely the Drowned God sent them to raise better captains. "I'm ready! Do you hear me!" Her voice merged with the thunder.]

An exceptional view unfolded before Asha. The mist was retreating from the ten towers, and the morning sun peeked out from behind the castle. She grinned. "If I were some lady from the green lands, I might shed a tear. But the only thing that makes me want to weep is the sight of your drunken faces." The crew burst out laughing.
The guards let Asha into the castle without complaint. She had been coming there far too long. She refused an escort. She knew well enough she'd find her uncle in the Book Tower. He always began his mornings reading. She wove her way through a maze of corridors until she stood before the heavy doors of the library. She wanted to simply barge in, but she knew Rodrik wouldn't wish it. Why should what he wished matter? And yet she reached out and knocked.
She entered only when a bored voice called her in. She performed a parody of a curtsy, holding up an imaginary skirt. "Good morning, uncle." She sat down at the table on his right without being invited. For a while she gazed out the window. The sun was painting golden patterns across the azure sea. She turned to Rodrik. "Lannisport. I've chosen Lannisport for my first voyage." She slumped back against the chair. "If all goes well, we set sail in a week. I was thinking..." She spread her arms wide, as if to take in the whole room full of books. "You wouldn't happen to have some advice for a young captain about to make her first voyage?"

The Black Wind was an imposing sight this time of evening. Though Asha would knock the teeth out of anyone who claimed it wasn't at any other hour. Her ship. Built by the finest shipwrights on Pyke. Asha had taken her out a few times, but never on a true voyage. That began today. She had chosen Lannisport, to see with her own eyes the site of perhaps the boldest ruse in the history of the Iron Islands. Cursing from the deck pulled her back to reality. She grinned and ran up the gangplank onto the Black Wind.
She ordered the crew to assemble. Her eyes swept the deck. Everything looked in order. All that remained was to unfurl the sails, weigh anchor, and make for the horizon. She drew herself up to her full height. She could taste salt on her lips, but she mastered herself and didn't lick them. Qarl staggered up from below deck. Asha's heart began to pound. Surely from the wind in her hair.
When everyone had gathered, Asha leapt onto the railing. "Finally! Took you long enough." She cleared her throat. "I don't care for speeches, but a captain ought to say something before a voyage. We sail to the western lands, and we'll see all their wonders. Trees heavy with peaches, cities of stone, chests full of silver, and lye so strong even Aggar would stop stinking! We'll bring back the treasures of the green lands and..." Someone cut in and added salt wives. Asha roared with laughter. "Fuck! Harlon's right — what kind of captain forgets the salt wives?" She grabbed an axe and hurled it high above her head. As it fell she caught it by the haft and bellowed. "The seven seas are my destiny to sail!"

Asha flicked blood from her glove onto the deck. She wasn't sure whether it was hers or belonged to the burly man with an axe in his neck. She planted her foot on the corpse's massive belly and gripped the haft with both hands. She pulled. The blade was stuck fast. She tried again and again until she finally wrenched the axe free — nearly losing her balance in the process, saved only by a quick step backward. A stench rose from her dead opponent's weeping wounds. Nothing pleasant, but Aggar smelled worse. Fresh blood seeped into the cut on her throat. Just a scratch.
Asha's eyes wandered over her surroundings. The prow was strewn with corpses, most of them the enemy's. She spotted Qarl and gave him a nod. Asha's first true voyage. She and her crew had sailed to Lannisport, lingered a few days, then turned south. Everything had seemed so peaceful — until the pirates from the Stepstones attacked. Who in their right mind would challenge the Black Wind on the open sea? The battle ended quickly. Asha had ordered them to ram the enemy ship broadside. Her ironborn, with their captain at the head, leapt over the railing and cut the pirates down.
Asha turned at the sound of movement behind her. Two ironborn held a pale man pinned between them. She strode out to meet them. She buried her axe in the deck a hair's breadth from the prisoner's knee. "Was it you who ordered the attack on my ship? On my crew? Because if it was, you've had the honor of being the first man the kraken's daughter ever defeated!"
