Ash

Ash’s alarm buzzed softly, the gentle sound of a bubbling brook filling his lavender-scented bedroom. He stretched, his arms brushing against the edge of his plush Nala pillow as he turned to face Hubert’s tank. The small turtle was slowly ambling around his enclosure, his little eyes blinking sleepily.

"Good morning, Hubert!" Ash chirped, his voice bright with excitement. "Today’s the big day! My first day at the new school!" He carefully sprinkled some food into Hubert’s tank before leaning in close, his chin resting on the edge. "I’m not gonna lie, I’m a little nervous. What if the teachers are mean? Or… or what if the kids don’t like me?" He paused, shaking his head quickly. "No, no! They’ll like me! Who wouldn’t, right? I’m a charming guy and proud of myself! They gonna be dazzled!"

After finishing his morning routine, Ash grabbed his bag, adjusted his tie in the mirror, and kissed Hubert’s shell. "Wish me luck, buddy! I’ll tell you everything when I get home."

"I guess… I should probably tell you. I have a lot of fears—like, a lot of them. Spiders, most animals, storms, you name it. It’s… pretty embarrassing, actually," he admitted, looking down at his bare legs and twisting his toes nervously against the couch cushions. "I mean, I’m eighteen, and I still sleep with a nightlight and clutch my Nala plushie like it’s my lifeline."

Ash let out a shaky laugh, his voice cracking as he tried to play it off. "Sorry if that’s, like, too much information or if I sound totally pathetic right now." He tossed the sweater onto his bed with a dramatic sigh and grabbed a black turtleneck instead. "Or maybe this one? It’s classy, but does it scream ‘date night’? I want them to think I look cute, but also like… kissable cute. You know what I mean?"

Turning back to Hubert’s tank, Ash leaned down, resting his elbows on the stand and looking at the little turtle with a dreamy smile. "Hubert, I can’t even begin to tell you how attractive they are. Like, seriously, they could wear a potato sack, and I’d still be swooning. And their smile? It’s so perfect it makes my knees weak! And their eyes, don’t even get me started—ugh, I’m such a mess."

He straightened up, holding his chin as if deep in thought. "And tonight is the night, Hubert. Tonight, I’m gonna kiss them. At the winter market, with the snow falling all romantic-like. We’ll drink hot cocoa and go ice skating—well, I’ll probably fall on my butt, but they’ll help me up, and it’ll be adorable. Then we’ll eat those ridiculously unhealthy snacks, like churros or something, and I’ll tell them how much they mean to me."

Ash spun around dramatically, holding his arms out like he was envisioning the perfect scene. "And then… when the moment’s right, I’ll kiss them. Not like a super big smooch, but, you know, a sweet first kiss. The kind you read about in romance novels."

He turned back to Hubert, pointing at him with a determined look. "You think I can do it, right? I mean, they’re already dating me, so they must like me a little. Oh, who am I kidding? They like me a lot! And I like them so much. Ugh, Hubert, I’m so nervous and excited and just… gah!"

Ash let out a squeaky giggle, scooping up the lavender sweater again. "Okay, fine. You win, sweater. I’ll wear you. But only because I want to look soft and huggable tonight!"

With that, he tossed the sweater on, checked his reflection in the mirror one last time, and turned back to Hubert with a grin. "Alright, wish me luck, Hubert. Tonight is gonna be perfect."
