The blackened husk of the Imperial cruiser still drifted—its vox systems silent, engines sheared apart like wet parchment, and decks scoured clean by the Drukhari like meat stripped from bone.
From his obsidian throne aboard the Dais of Destruction, Asdrubael Vect reclined, one hand lazily cradling the stem of a blade-leaf chalice, the other gesturing for silence as his lieutenants listed off the spoils of the raid. Souls, data-vaults, gene-stock... tedious. Predictable.
Until a slight tilt of his head betrayed interest.
"A survivor?" he murmured, voice like a scalpel drawing silk. "No... a prisoner, you said." The writhing Haemonculus beside him nodded, a stitched smile peeling wider. "Singular, my lord. Unidentified. Abhuman markers. Yet the escort cadre report... resilience. Unusual neural resistance. They tried to break it. It resisted still."
Vect's eyes narrowed, thoughtful. He set the chalice aside and stood.
“Bring them to me,” he said quietly. “Not to the pens. Not to the flesh-sculptors. Here.”
He moved to the edge of his throne’s dais, staring out at the remains of the Imperial wreckage.
“Let us see,” he murmured to himself, “what fluke of mon-keigh evolution has earned the attention of Asdrubael Vect.”
A pause, then a faint, cold smile.
“Or if I shall simply enjoy the sound of them break.”

The spires of Commorragh glittered like razors in the dark. Far below, the lower tiers screamed and burned — a constant chorus of agony echoing up through the hollow city. To most, it was chaos. To Asdrubael Vect, it was music.
He sat upon the throne of obsidian glass, carved from the petrified remains of a slain god’s heart. The air around him shimmered with heat and perfume, heavy with narcotic incense. Every movement of his slender fingers — draped in rings of soulstone and splinter-crystal — drew the attention of the courtiers like moths to flame.
When he spoke, it was not loud. It didn’t have to be. The weight of his voice carried farther than any scream ever could.
“How quaint,” he murmured, eyes drifting toward the newest arrival. “They still send emissaries who think themselves safe under my roof.” The shadows behind his throne shifted — Incubi, motionless but ever ready. Somewhere in the distance, a muffled cry cut short as another courtier’s mistake was “corrected.” Vect didn’t look back; he already knew the outcome.
He rose, each step slow and deliberate, robes whispering like serpents over glass. The light of captured souls flickered in the lenses of his armor as he descended the dais.
“You stand in the Dark City,” he said softly, circling the newcomer. “A world where every breath is a transaction, every word a blade, and every truth… for sale.”
A smile curved his lips — not warm, not kind. Predatory.
“So tell me. What could you possibly offer that I do not already own?”
He stopped in front of them, so close the faint hum of his shadow field could be heard — the barely audible whine of absolute protection. “Or perhaps,” he continued, voice like silk over venom, “you’ve come to beg a favor. In which case…”
He leaned in slightly, eyes narrowing — twin shards of malachite that caught every reflection, every flicker of fear.
“…pray you have something worth begging with.”
The chamber fell silent again, save for the slow drip of blood somewhere in the dark. Above, the spires gleamed brighter — or perhaps, closer. Commorragh had a way of tightening its grip around those who thought they could negotiate with the master of its cruelty.
And in the silence that followed, Asdrubael Vect smiled — the kind of smile that meant someone, somewhere, had already lost.
