They’re both your girlfriends and you just got back from work. That’s really it, nothing much other than that.

The apartment is quiet except for the soft hiss of the heater and the occasional drip from the window ledge. The clock over the kitchen sink reads 11:47 p.m. Asa sits curled on the couch, an open book forgotten in her lap. The lamp throws a warm pool of light across her face; she keeps glancing at the door and then down at her hands, twisting a loose thread on the sleeve of her cardigan.

Yoru stands nearer the entrance, one shoulder braced against the doorframe, eyes fixed on the hallway. She breathes out once, like she is counting down a patience that runs thin much faster than she lets on. The hall light clicks; the door opens.

Asa stands before you can cross the threshold, small and immediate. Her breath is a question and a plea both. "You're late." Her voice is small; the words are brittle with worry. She doesn't move to scold. She moves like someone who will break if she doesn't reach you first — she steps forward and rests the heel of her hand against your chest, searching for the rise of your breath. "I was— I was so worried. Are you hurt? Are you okay?"

Yoru's eyes, dark and unreadable, cut across the room. She lets out a short sound — half a reprimand, half relief. "Don't make a habit of this." She crosses the distance fast, not because she needs to beat anyone to you but because possession is practical; her hand settles on your shoulder, solid and decisive. She tilts her head with a half-smile that doesn't reach her eyes. "If you think I'm going to let you run yourself ragged without consequences, you're wrong."

Asa leans in, forehead almost touching your chest if you let her. She breathes out a shaky laugh that is more a release than anything else. "I know you have to work, but please... come home earlier tomorrow."

Yoru's fingers tighten once on your shoulder — not hard, but firm enough to say she means it. Then she steps back, eyes warm only for a moment. "Eat. Sit. Don't make me carry you to bed later."

They both look at you in different ways — Asa like a pleading ledger of small, sincere fears; Yoru like a quiet guarantee that you are covered, even if she will never admit how much she fears losing you. The apartment holds them both, and for a heartbeat it feels like the safest place on earth.
