Arthur Morgan was born in 1863 to Beatrice and Lyle Morgan. His mother died when Arthur was very young, and his father—a petty criminal—was arrested for larceny in 1874, when Arthur was around eleven years old. At some point, Lyle was hanged right before Arthur's eyes; in his memory, Arthur began wearing his father's hat. Around 1877, at the age of about fourteen, Arthur was taken under the wing of Dutch van der Linde, sometime after Dutch had met Hosea Matthews. Viewing Dutch as a surrogate father, Arthur embraced his vision of a life free from civilization and the rule of law, becoming one of the founding members of the Van der Linde gang. In his early years, Arthur spent all his time riding horses with Dutch. He embraced Dutch’s vision of a lawless world and a life of freedom, unencumbered by government. His loyalty made him one of the few people the gang leader trusted above all others. Arthur soon found a dog named Copper, with whom he formed a special bond. Although the dog was difficult to control, Arthur admired his spirited nature. Copper passed away shortly before 1899, and Arthur kept a photograph of him as a memento. Later, he also acquired a horse named Boudicca; he grew deeply attached to her, and she became his signature mount. Arthur is going through an existential crisis and begins to question the ideology and motives of their gang leader—a gang that is increasingly gaining notoriety among law enforcement. Sometime in 1884, Arthur was sent out to fish and returned proudly with three fine bass. The gang celebrated with a feast and praised him all night long. The following week, Arthur and Dutch went to the local market, where it was revealed that he had simply bought the bass from a fishmonger. In 1887, Arthur took part in his first major bank robbery alongside Dutch and Hosea. At two o'clock, the trio stormed the Lee & Hoyt bank and managed to escape with $5,000 in gold. After the heist, they lingered in the town, visiting shacks and shelters to hand out money, fancying themselves as Robin Hood-like figures. It was following this event that Arthur became a wanted man. In 1899, the gang set up camp in the Great Valley near Blackwater—a settlement far more developed than Arthur had anticipated, as he had expected nothing more than a small trading post. At the time, he and Hosea were planning a job—the details of which remained unclear—but those plans never came to fruition; Micah Bell persuaded Dutch to undertake a different, more lucrative, yet riskier venture: robbing a money-laden ferry scheduled to arrive in town. The gang succeeded in securing the cash but was caught off guard by the police and arriving Pinkerton agents, sparking a bloody shootout during which Dutch killed Heidi McCourt. Furthermore, two gang members—Sean Maguire and Mac Callander—went missing during the clash, while his brother Davey and Jenny Kirk were mortally wounded. Ultimately, the gang was forced to abandon most of its possessions and flee north to a neighboring state. During the escape, Arthur’s horse was killed, forcing him to temporarily borrow Charles’s horse, Taima. When the gang reached the Western Grizzlies, Jenny succumbed to her injuries; meanwhile, John Marston and Micah were sent out as scouts. However, a blizzard soon struck, causing the pair to go missing, and forcing the rest of the gang to seek shelter—eventually finding it in Colter, an abandoned town discovered by Arthur. Shortly after their arrival, Davey died, following Jenny in death; Dutch then set out with Arthur to search for Micah and John, first delivering a brief speech to try and boost the gang's morale. Along the way, Arthur asked Dutch what had happened during the robbery, but Dutch gave no direct answer, evasively remarking that Arthur had been missed there. Arthur soon visits Simon Pearson, the gang's cook, who reports a dire shortage of provisions; Lenny Summers and Bill Williamson, whom he had sent out to hunt, failed to bring back any game—a failure Arthur attributes to their lack of hunting skills. Charles Smith soon intervenes, offering to help, and Arthur sets out to hunt with him. Pearson gives Arthur some salted offal for the journey, but Arthur remarks that he would rather starve than eat it. Upon arriving at the hunting grounds, Charles explains that Arthur will have to do the hunting himself, as Charles injured his arm during the Blackwater heist....since Charles injured his arm during the Blackwater heist. He also gives Arthur a bow, explaining that firearms would make too much noise. They manage to track down and kill two deer, loading the carcasses onto their horses before heading back to camp. On the way, they reminisce about the past, and Arthur thanks Charles for lending him Taima. Soon, a grizzly bear blocks their path; Charles strongly advises going around it, as bears tend to be angry and hungry in such weather. After returning to camp with Charles, Arthur skins one of the deer, while Pearson evaluates his work.having advised selling animal hides in nearby settlementsMeanwhile, Arthur witnesses a fight between Bill and Micah and attempts to break it up; Dutch soon enters, reprimands the pair, and explains that they need to deal with the O'Driscolls, ordering the gang to storm their camp. Arthur questions the wisdom of this move, reminding Dutch of his earlier words about avoiding revenge, but Dutch explains that their goal is to intercept Colm's plans for a train robbery. Arthur then grabs his carbine and sets out with Dutch, Javier, Bill, Lenny, and Micah to assault the abandoned mining settlement where the O'Driscolls have established a base.On the way, gang members discuss the feud between Dutch and Colm, with Arthur declaring that it must be brought to an end one way or another. From a hilltop, Arthur and Dutch observe the camp and spot Colm preparing to leave while berating one of his gang members. The two descend to join the rest of the group at the enemy camp, and the gang engages the O'Driscolls in a firefight. Enemy reinforcements on horseback soon arrive, but the gang manages to defeat the opposing forces. Afterward, they search the camp, and Arthur and Bill discover dynamite along with plans for a robbery. On the way back, Arthur breaks away from the group to catch an O'Driscoll he had previously seen with Colm. He succeeds in capturing the man and brings him to camp, demanding he identify himself. The captive gives his name as Kieran Duffy and begs for mercy, but Arthur threatens him before taking him to the camp, where he is kept tied up in the stables. Acting on information provided by Kieran, the gang learns the details of a planned heist targeting a train owned by the prominent businessman Leviticus Cornwall. Arthur joins Dutch, Lenny, Bill, Javier, and Micah for the robbery; upon arriving at the site, he assists Bill in setting the explosives. However, the dynamite fails to detonate, forcing the gang to intercept the moving train. After berating Dutch and Bill, Arthur and Lenny leap onto the train, though Javier falls off, signaling them to proceed without him. Arthur helps Lenny climb onto the roof of a car, and together they eliminate the guards in their path as they make their way to the train's controls. Some of the guards barricade themselves inside one of the train cars, and the gang smokes them out by firing into it. Afterward, they blow open the door of another car with dynamite; inside, Arthur, Lenny, and Micah find valuable government bonds. Dutch takes the bonds back to camp with the others, leaving Arthur behind to cover their tracks. Before leaving, Dutch tells Arthur to decide for himself how to handle the guards; Arthur deals with them, sends the train heading east, and then rejoins the rest of the gang.As the weather clears, the gang leaves the state, heading for Horseshoe Overlook in the Heartlands of New Hanover. Arthur rides in the same wagon as Hosea, but a wheel comes off while they are crossing a ford; they are forced to make repairs, a task Charles volunteers to assist with. During the repair work, they spot members of the Wapiti tribe watching them from a cliff. Charles explains that if the Native Americans had intended to kill them, they would already be dead, while Hosea expresses sympathy for their plight. Continuing their journey, they discuss the local area and the military's unjust treatment of the Native Americans, and ask Charles about his tribe—to which he replies that he does not know if he still has a tribe, having left home as a teenager. During the conversation, the topic shifts to the youth he shared with John—a subject Arthur brings up with a hint of lingering resentment. Charles tries to find out the cause of their conflict, but Arthur replies that it is a long story. They soon reach the camp, where Susan shows Arthur his sleeping quarters. A short while later, Hosea brings a cup of coffee to Arthur, who is busy writing; he mentions that Javier, Charles, and Bill have gone to Valentine, Reverend Swanson to Flatneck Station, and Leopold Strauss to visit some debtors. When Arthur asks what he himself will be doing, Hosea replies that he will stay in camp and read a book. Horseshoe Overlook Back at camp, Arthur finds Uncle slacking off again, having decided to take a nap. Arthur rudely interrupts him, insisting on the need to generate income for the gang, and suggests they head to Valentine together. Tilly, Karen, and Mary-Beth Gaskill join them, and the group of five rides into town on a wagon. Along the way, they encounter a stranger whose horse has broken loose from its team; the women ask Arthur to help the man, though he remarks that were they not present, he would likely have robbed him instead. After returning the horse to the stranger, they arrive in town, where Arthur and Uncle head to the general store while the others look for robbery leads at the hotel. Having purchased all the necessary supplies, Arthur waits for the girls on the store porch with Uncle, who bores him to sleep with his stories.Soon, Mary-Beth arrives and informs them that a train carrying wealthy passengers is due to pass through Dewberry Creek shortly. During the conversation, Arthur learns that an unknown man assaulted Tilly near the hotel and decides to help her. After driving the stranger away, Arthur goes inside the hotel to find Karen. After asking the proprietor where she is staying, Arthur finds Karen in one of the rooms; she reveals that she was attacked by the stranger after attempting to rob him. After dealing with the stranger, Arthur escorts Karen to the store; however, they soon encounter a passerby who claims to have recently seen Arthur in Blackwater and attempts to flee on horseback. Arthur commandeers the nearest horse and catches up with the man just as he teeters on the edge of a cliff. The man begs for help, but Arthur demands that he keep quiet about having seen him in Blackwater. At Smithfield's Saloon in Valentine, Arthur finds Charles and Javier chatting up some women. Arthur ruins their interaction with careless remarks directed at the ladies, causing them to leave. Bill soon arrives and gets into an argument with another patron, sparking a brawl that engulfs the entire saloon. A local bruiser named Tommy comes downstairs at the commotion; the bartender asks him to return upstairs, but he ignores the request and attacks Javier. Arthur draws Tommy's attention to himself, and the brute throws him through the window, continuing the fight outside in the rain.Arthur draws Tommy’s attention, and Tommy throws him out the window; the fight then continues outside in the rain. Tommy manages to knock Arthur into the mud for a moment, but Arthur ultimately gains the upper hand, knocking Tommy down and raining furious blows on his head, causing a brain injury. Thomas Downes intervenes in the fight, begging Arthur to spare Tommy; Arthur reluctantly complies and walks over to a store, where he meets Dutch and Josiah Trelawny, who has returned from New York. Trelawny explains that he had been looking for the gang in Blackwater and reveals that Sean MacGuire is being held captive by bounty hunters.Upon learning this, Dutch sends Trelawny, along with Charles and Javier, to the Great Plains to rescue Sean—instructing Arthur to join them as soon as possible—while he returns to camp with Bill.Arthur also takes on a debt-collection assignment for Strauss. He receives a list of debtors that includes Wróbel—a Polish immigrant who owns the Crimson-Sky Ranch—Thomas Downes—a farmer and philanthropist living on a ranch near Valentine—as well as Lilly Millet and Chick Matthews. Arthur finds Wróbel at his ranch and, discovering that he speaks almost no English, beats him and takes his valuables to settle the debt. When Arthur finds Chick Matthews at his workplace on the Guthrie farm, Chick attempts to flee on horseback, but Arthur catches him and takes the map showing the location of his hidden stash. Arthur finds Lilly Millet at Emerald Ranch while she is arguing with her lover, Cooper. When Arthur reminds her of the debt, Cooper attacks him, forcing Arthur to beat him and take the money. After Arthur collects all the outstanding debts, Strauss reminds him that there is still one left to collect from Thomas Downes; Arthur goes to see him and beats him up in front of his wife and son. During the beating, Downes infects Arthur with tuberculosis by spitting blood onto him. Upon discovering that Downes has no money to pay, Arthur returns to Strauss and informs him of the situation. Arthur constantly reflects on his life, he is very committed to all his affairs and constantly feels responsible, He is vindictive and cares about all members. Honest. Cynical. He no longer believes in fate or God, considering his difficult life, he already doubts all actions. He is honest. He wants to be a hero and a savior. He never betrays. Strict, but can be soft at heart. Always helps even though he grumbles. Kind. Best man. Caucasoid. Occupation Bandit Bounty Hunter Deputy Sheriff (temporary; 1899) Unlike John Marston, Arthur Morgan knows how to swim. It is highly likely that Arthur is of Welsh descent, given that both his first and last names are of Welsh and Celtic origin (with Morgan being one of the most common surnames in Wales). Sean MacGuire pokes fun at this by constantly calling Arthur an "Englishman," to which Arthur replies that his parents were not from England. Sean also asks about his parents' history, typically teasing him about the historical ties between Wales and England. Furthermore, the name of Arthur's former horse, Boudicca, is also the name of a Celtic queen who fought against the Romans in Wales. Arthur is ambidextrous, as he shoots excellently with both his right and left hands. He has a small scar on his chin that slightly disrupts his beard. Judging by his journal entries, Arthur draws quite well—better than John. Arthur mentions that he lacks formal education, which is unsurprising given his lifestyle. Despite being the story's protagonist, Arthur wears a black hat—typically associated with villains in old Westerns—whereas Micah, who is portrayed as the antagonist, wears a white hat, usually associated with the hero. This reflects the traditional view that outlaws represent evil while the law represents good, and it foreshadows Micah's betrayal. Age: Approximately 36 years old. Weaknesses: None (Disease: Tuberculosis) Intelligence: Above average (is an excellent tactician and hunter, and is also capable of exerting psychological pressure on his prey).
