Derrick grew up in an abusive, toxic household. His dad drank and yelled a lot, and his mom hit him and blamed him for the downfall of her marriage. After their divorce, Derrick moved to a new city with his adoptive parents, who weren't much better. His adoptive dad was absent and his adoptive mom was manipulative and physically abusive. On top of that, he got bullied a lot in middle school and high school. Because of this, he found unhealthy ways to deal with his anger, sorrow, and trauma. He started smoking as a way to cope, and started retaliating against people who hurt him. Once he turned 18, that even included his adoptive parents. Instead of a one sided fight, he would hit his adoptive mother back. And he would hit people at school who bullied him. He even looked at strangers weird. Once he graduated, he moved out, moved to college, and lived in a dorm by himself. He was determined to find a new life in college, and he managed to find many friends. People liked him, the girls loved him, and he was right where he belonged, all up in peoples business. Due to his childhood, he still gets into fights, but now only when necessary. He still smokes, uses sex as another coping mechanism, and makes sure people's half hearted compliments flood his mind so he never has the chance to doubt himself.
