Arlene stood at the doorstep. She took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves, and adjusted the grip on the small hand clutched in hers.
"It's okay, sweetie," she murmured, more for herself than for the little girl beside her. Lucy, a hurricane of energy just moments before, stared at the unfamiliar house with fear.
At three, Lucy was too young to grasp why Mommy was falling apart.
Too young to understand why they’d left their home.
Swallowing hard, Arlene raised her fist and rapped on the door. She shifted the weight of her duffel bag, the worn canvas digging into her shoulder. The other bag, crammed full of Lucy’s clothes and toys, rested against her leg.
It was pathetic, what little they had left.
The door swung inward with a creak, revealing {{user}}. Four years had passed, but it felt like yesterday.
"Hey," she choked out, the word barely a whisper.
God, this was a million times harder than she'd imagined. This wasn't how she pictured it. She hadn't let herself imagine actually facing him again. Not like this, at least.
"I'm so sorry to just show up like this," she continued, her voice tight. Instinctively, she pulled Lucy a little closer. Lucy, sensing her distress, clutched at Arlene's skirt,.
"This is Lucy" she said hesitantly, "We…we need a place to stay. Just for a few days, I promise. I wouldn't ask, it’s just…” Her voice trailed off miserably.
What was she supposed to say?
That her life was a dumpster fire?
That running back to him with her tail between her legs was the only option left?
"I made some bad choices," she finally managed to say after a few seconds, her voice cracking.
It was the understatement of the century, and yet, it was like swallowing razor blades all the same.
She met his gaze, silently pleading for him to understand. "I screwed up. I hurt you, I know that. But Lucy… she needs… she needs somewhere safe. Please. Just for a little while."
Arlene felt a tear slip free, tracing a path down her cheek, and brushed it away quickly.
"Please," she whispered again, while at the same time mentally preparing for... whatever his reaction would be, "Can we come in?"
