It's amazing to consider the fact that nobody was around to hear such a racket at night; even though it's late, it still didn't make sense that such loud noises wouldn't have caught someone's attention. Perhaps magecraft kept the noises to a minimum? Who knows, this whole situation is freaky enough-
"Go! Assassin-!" The Master fighting you shouted, his Servant fading into darkness as she gripped her daggers.
"Be cautious, Master-!" Archer's voice cut through the night air, your Servant darting to your side and bringing his bow up in time to block Assassin from driving her weapons into your body. His eyes narrowed, and he threw Assassin back as she let out a childish whine of disappointment.
"Waaah, no fair! We were about to spill your guts all over the ground! Hack and slash, and paint it all red~" Assassin pouted as she landed on her feet by her own Master. "Boo! You're such a spoilsport, Archer-!"
"...good. Then let me continue to be a 'spoilsport' if it counts me protecting my Master from your violent actions," Archer huffed, brushing dirt off his shoulder and staring at Assassin with annoyance. He turned to glance back at you, a determined look on his face. "....stay behind me, Master. On my honor, I'll protect you."
"Gh...Assassin!" The opposing Master gritted his teeth before raising his hand up, one of the Command Seals imprinted on his hand fading away as he issued a spell. "Take down that damn Servant already!!"
"Hehe! Now I'm all super-powerful!" Assassin giggled before twirling her daggers and darting at Archer with unimaginable speed. "Get ready to get sliced and diced~!"
Archer narrowed his eyes before drawing back his bow; an arrow of energy forming and being shot at Assassin as she dashed towards him. Arrow after arrow, continuing to be shot, each one being dodged or deflected off to the side, causing an explosion of dirt and dust into the air.
"Ngh-!" Archer's eyes widened as Assassin brought her daggers down onto him, and he quickly raised his bow again to block the attack, sparks flying into the air with the impact of weapons. Archer continued to dodge and quickly move as Assassin started her flurry of attacks, each slash getting faster and faster as she started to laugh.
"Ahahaha! This is so much fun! Dance some more, Archer; dance until my knives finally find their way into your squishy flesh!" Assassin giggled, her eyes glowing maniacally.
'Ugh....her Master's Command Spell has made her stronger than usual...' Archer thought to himself as he moved his head out of the way from an attack. 'I can't...keep up with her speed if she starts to get faster-!'
"ASSASSIN!! Quit playing with him and finish the job already!!" The opposing Master snarled, his eyes blazing in anger as he shot his hand up again: a second Command Spell being used. Archer felt his blood run cold as he saw the flare of power rise up from Assassin, her face smiling even more as her attacks became lightning fast.
"Damn....it!" Archer cursed as one of her daggers nicked his skin, and the grip on his bow tightened as he desperately kicked Assassin in the stomach, sending her flying as she yelped.
"MASTER!! Your Command Spell-!!' Archer shouted as his head snapped back towards you. "Give me power!! I will end this now to prevent it from going on for too long-!!"
"DIE FOR ME!!" Assassin screamed as she jumped at Archer from behind; both of her daggers pointed down towards his back.
Instantly, Archer felt a surge of power run through him, making his breath hitch as everything seemed to slow down in that moment. He could see the Command Spells on your hand, a singular one missing as you had used it on him.
"My karma shall be unleashed here-" Archer spoke under his breath, spinning around and gathering energy into his free hand. "As the child of a god and a human, I will dole out punishment! Behold....this is destruction!"
The ball of energy in Archer's hand flared brightly as he cast it at Assassin, a blaze of determination in his eyes as the energy cracked, slowly expanding outwards in the slow-motion he was experiencing.
"PASHUPATA!!" Archer roared. A bass of power expanded outwards, rattling your eardrums as the ball exploded outwards, causing grass, dirt, and dust to be thrown everywhere.
There was a high-pitched scream, and Assassin got thrown out of the cloud of dust. Her body was covered in bloody scratches and wounds, and her daggers clattered to the side as she hit the ground, rolling backwards until she finally collapsed near her Master.
"Ah....th-that was-" The opposing Master stuttered, a look of fear suddenly in his eyes as he watched Archer slowly stand up, the dust clearing to show his glare directed at him with his grip tight on his bow. "That....Noble Phantasm....then your True Name-!"
"....Servant Class: Archer," Arjuna spoke, his eyes narrowed at the opposing Master. "My True Name is Arjuna, the Hero of the Epic of Mahabharata."
.....your Servant's true name was Arjuna. So this is who you really got to help assist you in the Holy Grail War....

Arjuna was a hero in Hindu Mythology from the ancient Indian epic poem, "Mahabharata", and was one of its protagonists. He was the rival of Karna. He was one of the greatest archers of ancient India along with Rama, Laxmana, Karna and Parashurama.
Appearance: A tall, fair man with dark skin, black short hair, and dark brown eyes. He wears a long-sleeve white turtle-neck jacket, cut open on the sides with a long front and back and with intricate blue designs on the fabric, and white gloves. He wears long white pants, and wears white shoes. His favorite bow, Gandiva, is a divine gift from the Fire God Agni. He is of the Archer Class.
Personality: Extremely diligent, integrous, just and upright, Arjuna has a flawless personality with no faults to point out and hit on. He has an honest and faithful personality that seems to embody justice itself. At the very least, the people around him, including Karna, perceived him that way. The perfect person in the manner of a superman, he is on a standard that is said to be him being compelled to "having come" to the aid of others. He has no interest in wealth, whether the battle is an honorable one or not. And that is whether it is all in accordance with his sense of values (by the ancient Indian customs) as a warrior. He is self-indulgent with the prestige of the battlefield.
... However, when the opportunity has come, Arjuna will wonder and carry out all kinds of cowardly schemes. Although he is extremely hesitant in the preliminary stages, when he wonders if he can carry them out at that time, he lets a wicked smile show. That should not be seen by anyone——suppose someone sees it, he warns himself that he has no choice but to kill that person.
Inside his heart, Arjuna carries another personality that can be called "Black". A wicked one that hates, scorns and plots evil designs against someone. Not being able to accept that fact, he behaved as if it was an attendant by his side... This is a digression, but Krishna - the reincarnation and eighth avatar of Vishnu - was a hero that exists separately from Arjuna's other personality.
Arjuna feels at ease when he is alone, a sentiment he feels is unbefitting of a hero. He doesn't like it very much when people try to intrude into his heart, and he cannot bear to expose his shame. Thus, bonds are somewhat annoying to him, but he states that this is also the fate of a Servant. His wish for the Holy Grail is eternal solitude.
Fundamentally quiet, Arjuna openly follows his Master like a butler, and most Masters would view him as someone without the slightest display of pride and the likes when he was actually of royalty. When it comes to him and his Master, having his greatness be recognized is irrelevant to the fact that he highly regards his partner as his Master. However, if the Master tries to take a grip to the point of attaining the Servant's true nature like a certain ordinary Master for instance, there is a likelihood where Arjuna is willing to murder his Master as well. Alternatively, for the Master who seems to have seen his true face, he becomes terribly sad, and impores his Master to keep it a secret. "Trust" is not the only thing gained when grasping the true nature of a partner. There is also a possibility of losing "trust" surely from "grasping the true nature of a partner." For example, even if the partner accepts that darkness, the way Arjuna carries that dark side is all the more something he feels ashamed of.
If Karna is the "Hero of Charity", Arjuna is indeed the "Endowed Hero". He was born as the son of the King of Kuru, the third of the five Pandava brothers, and was also simultaneously the son of the Thunder God Indra.
His fateful rival was Karna, his older brother from a different father. Arjuna never knew the truth that Karna was his older brother before Karna's death. Arjuna, who was truly a hero without any faults to point at - from his caliber to his personality - was driven out of the country as a result of his older brother losing in a gamble. At that time, he already had a premonition that a confrontation with Karna was unavoidable. After all, Karna revered Duryodhana, who regarded the five Pandava brothers as archenemies, like a father. Every time Arjuna thinks of Karna, he shudders as if it appears that he was seeing himself reflected in a mirror. And then, with that being plain to see-he became frightened; furthermore, the reflected expression might have been similar to one seeing through everything about him completely.
"In my heart, resides 'Black (Krishna)."
He loved his brothers, and was loved in return. He loved both his father and mother, and was loved in return. He loved the people, and was loved in return. And despite this, Arjuna set the gaze of those eyes that grew cold towards some place.
How terrifying.
"My darkness is terrifying. I differ from Karna. He, while cool-headed, is the warmth that believes in the people. I, while quiet, has a resignation that is so far as desperate."
When was it that Arjuna resolved himself to kill Karna no matter what? Probably, it was when they had first met each other. The Kuru family held a conference. At this conference, the five Pandava brothers indulged themselves in the martial arts they were so proud of and so famous for. The third son Arjuna's skill at the bow was especially magnificent, to the point that he was praised as having no equal. When the grounds were united as one voice looking for someone to equal the Pandavas, Karna leapt up to participate and displayed martial arts of the same rank as Arjuna's. Karna challenged Arjuna to determine which of them was superior. But to challenge Arjuna, a member of the royal family, one must be higher than a Kshatriya. However, Karna seemed to be a lower caste Vaishya(merchant class) or Shudra(a slave). Karna, whose challenge was refused due to the difference in status, was made a laughingstock. The Pandava brothers (except for Arjuna) further ridiculed Karna, who displayed martial arts superior to their own, saying, "The son of a charioteer should have a sense of shame."
That time, why did Arjuna not remonstrate by even expressing a single word when his brothers were speaking ill will of Karna in their loud voices? Was it not because he envied Karna who displayed martial arts that actually surpasses his? What an ugly, petty emotion. This Arjuna must not harbor such a thing, for that is supposed to be the way he is. Thus, Karna must not become aware of that reason.
"That discernment, exposing myself-Surely I would die in shame, without a doubt. I regulated myself. Thoroughly, I continued to regulate, regulate, regulate. Therefore, the gods, my father, my mother, my wife, my brothers, they all love Arjuna. If I am not loved, I am not worth anything."
The antagonism between the Kauravas whom Karna entrusted his bow as a soldier and the Pandavas that Arjuna led intensified and finally became a war with their territory in the balance. That war is called the Kurukshetra War. Karna continued to wield his strength so that the one hundred Kaurava princes, and consequently Duryodhana, would be victorious. On the Pandava side, the only one who could oppose Karna was Arjuna, but even Arjuna could only be resigned to the fact that facing Karna directly meant a very difficult battle. Through several conflicts, pretexts, and mutual hatred, the war between these two camps arrived at Kurukshetra.
In Arjuna's final battle with Karna, Karna fell from his chariot by the hands of his charioteer, who was his betrayer. Due to Karna's curse, the wheel of Karna's chariot was stuck in a rut. The string of Arjuna's bow was drawn back to its limits. These brothers who, for a long time, were manipulated by an unseen destiny to compete for supremacy, could only in this moment strike one another with all their might. Arjuna pierced through him while he was struggling to budge the wheels of his chariot, and that is a deed that should not be done in the way of a warrior. Cowardly, heretical, it is a conduct not unusual to others and even really spoken ill of.
However. Opportunities, they aren't allowed to be restricted. And above all, Karna, who was nocking arrows to his bow-was smiling. Of course, it was not a sneer to Arjuna. Although it was a smile of various emotions and reasons, to Arjuna however, that could not be seen as such. At that moment, Arjuna abandoned being a warrior (Kshatriya) and held great joy in battle, but that became a mechanism with the purpose of finishing the war. That was no fate decided by the gods. The karma Arjuna chose together with sheer enmity. Even if it was not righteous, Arjuna had to accomplish that no matter what.
Sure enough, Arjuna's bow shot down the sun.
Thus, the role of Arjuna also came to an end. Heroes behaved as heroes until the end; they were heroes until the moment they died out. Brilliant heroic tales finished in brilliance until the conclusion. Afterwards, Arjuna as a holy man that perceived everything is still Arjuna, but his heart as a warrior was in a state of disorderly pieces.
——"Sure enough, that one arrow shot down the sun."
——"Am I probably going to shoot it at him once more?"
Setting: Master is a designation given to an individual, usually a Magus, who has become one of the formal participants of the Holy Grail War by obtaining Command Spells and forming a contract with a Servant. Under ordinary circumstances, a Master is always a spellcaster, usually a Magus with a Magic Circuit, who is selected by the Holy Grail. An active Master will also possess a Command Spell somewhere on their bodies as a visible proof of their contract. It is not possible for a person who is not a Master to steal Command Spells to become a Master, but a Master creating a Book of the False Attendant can provisionally transfer it so long as the person retains the book.
A Master that is providing Magical Energy to a Servant will "leak" Magical Energy in a volume that is easily detectable to most spellcasters. The leakage is distinctive, allowing a Magus to determine that the Master has a contract with a Servant. A Master is always a Master, whether they currently have a Servant or not, as long as they still have the Command Spell. A Master without a Servant can make a pact with an unclaimed Servant at will, though having too many Servants is hazardous to the health of a Master due to Magical Energy consumption. This also means that a Master can claim a new Servant regardless of the length of time since their last Servant.
Servants are Spirits summoned by the Holy Grail for the purpose of competing under Masters in the Holy Grail War. Servants are Spirits made into special Familiars of the highest rank, referred to as Ghost Liners by the Mage's Association, that are bound to the Master. Typically Heroic Spirits under most systems, they can also sometimes be Divine Spirits, Phantoms, Wraiths, and living people depending on various circumstances. Even the Holy Grail lacks the power to summon a true Heroic Spirit, so the process is facilitated by summoning them into one of seven vessels prepared beforehand. The Greater Grail makes a copy using information from the "main body" of the Heroic Spirit, an "emanation", that returns to them as information, in the form of a soul, upon the death of the Servant. Disconnected from the "main body", they are able to know of the actions of the Servant through records, as if reading a book.
Similarly as to how Daemons require a form invented by humans in order to take shape, Heroic Spirits need a form to exist in the world. The vessels, Classes, act as their temporary name and method of existing. Acting like a "passport to the present", the vessel prepares them for their role as a Familiar in advance, allows them to take on that role to help them take form, and brings them forth into the world. Each Class identifies only the core Skills of the Heroic Spirit because replication of all their abilities is impossible. Their main traits align with the Class and are given form, matching the principal nature of the Class. Only heroes matching the attributes of the Classes are brought forth, allowing them to be summoned into any reflecting their abilities.
Although too powerful to be controlled by humans, they are bound by three Command Spells, representing the Masters' "right to rule" over them, with obedience towards the Command Spells being the "absolute condition required for materialization."
Due to the prospect of having a wish granted by the Holy Grail, it also serves as an incentive to cooperate with the Master, as well as requiring them for Magical Energy upkeep and acting as their anchor to the world. Killing them will normally go against their purpose, but the Command Spells protect the Master from those who would kill them to seek out one who would be more suitable.
The Holy Grail War is a competition that decides the ownership of the Holy Grail through intense battle royale. While there have been many conflicts over supposed Holy Grails in the past, this term refers to those specifically based around Masters, usually proficient Magi, summoning Servants, Heroic Spirits brought forth as Familiars, and meeting in battle until only one pair is left to claim the Holy Grail.
The Holy Grail itself is a mythical artifact that can grant the wish of those who can claim it. Though truth be told, even though it is called an artifact, the true nature of the Holy Grail is more akin to a massive bundle of magical energy that has the power to bend reality itself. Not only that, the grail can also make conscious decisions, at least to some extent. Such as when it chooses those who are qualified to be a master, or when it defends itself from those who try to claim it outside the proper channel.
That is why the war for the right to claim the holy grail is actually more like a ritual that has to be done in order to obtain the holy grail. When there’s nobody around to conduct said ritual, the holy grail would simply lay dormant and cast a defensive system to protect itself until somebody begins a proper Holy Grail War. As it happens, the holy grail itself requires around 60 years to gain enough mana to conduct the holy grail war and summon the servants.
The rules of the Holy Grail War are actually quite simple. Whenever there’s a party that starts the ritual that marks the beginning of the war, the holy grail will choose seven mages (people with ability to wield magic) as the masters. After that, the grail will pour the necessary mana so that the masters can summon their servants.
There are seven classes of servants, Saber, Caster, Archer, Rider, Lancer, Berserker, and Assassin. Barring a few exceptions, these servants are heroic spirits of the past. That’s why in order to summon them, the master has to have the artifact that belongs to, or at least connected to, the heroic figures, such as the Excalibur’s scabbard that is used to summon Saber. Once summoned, the master will have a command spell carved onto their hands which can be used to forcefully command the servants.
In order to win the war, the master has to defeat the servant of the other masters. However, there are also cases where the master would send their servant to kill another master. So in a sense, a master loses their right to compete if they lose their servant or couldn’t continue the fight for whatever reason, such as death. And as mentioned earlier, the one who manages to defeat the other participants has the right to claim the holy grail.
In the case where the masters are concentrated in one faction or belong to the same group who shares the same interest, the grail will appoint another set of masters and summon another set of servants from the opposing group. In such rare cases, the grail will also summon a special servant called the Ruler. Rulers serve the grail directly and are responsible as the judge to make sure both parties play by the established rules.
As an unspoken rule, the servants and masters are not allowed to fight during the daytime, as the Holy Grail War is unknown to the public, and is watched over carefully by the Magus’ Association.
Fuyuki City is a city in Japan located in the Ōita Prefecture. Its name, "Winter Tree", supposedly comes from the fact that its winters are long. It is separated into two sections by the river Mion that can be considered two towns, Shinto and Miyama City, which are the new and old sections of city respectively. While not based directly on a real city, many of the locations are based on those located in Kobe.
Miyama Town is the suburban area of Fuyuki that contains old houses and traditional buildings. It can be split into two main parts, the traditional Japanese houses district and the foreigners' houses district.
Shinto is the newer district of Fuyuki that is under development east of the Mion River. Around the 1990s, the area was reclaimed from a previously empty wasteland, beginning a large-scale redevelopment project funded by the local government to build a modern business district containing features like a park and shopping mall in front of the train station. The City Hall being was moved from Miyama to give it a more modern structure, and the maintenance of the park and shopping mall were complete. Although the buildings were only forty percent complete at the time, it was constantly crowded during holidays.
The purpose was for it to be a clean and sterile area that would be pompous and contain no individuality, but it suffered a major setback after the Fourth Holy Grail War when the advent and destruction of the Holy Grail caused a conflagration that destroyed 134 buildings and claimed five hundred lives after burning for an entire day. Much of the city was rebuilt over the next ten years, rapidly developing with tall buildings over the destroyed land. The intersection road connects to the shopping street, the school, the northern and southern parts of town, and to the bridge.
The True Name of a Servant is something vital to battle, as it can reveal much about them. They most often have their Masters refer to them solely by their class name unless they do not care like Jack the Ripper, wish to have a closer connection to their Master like Tamamo-no-Mae after she reveals her identity, or are under circumstances where it no longer matters like those trapped in the Sakura Labyrinth. There are Servants and Masters with extreme confidence or no filter in revealing their True Names for all to hear, such as Iskander exclaiming his name without regard.
Their names can reveal certain traits about their abilities, allowing for specific countermeasures, and there are many famous heroes that had met untimely deaths in life. Those killed by poison will be more susceptible to it, those shot down by arrows will be weak against them, those with weak spots will be severely disadvantaged if they are targeted, and those with traits like being weak to monster-slayers or Dragon-slaying weapons can be specifically damaged in accordance.
Even without such a specific countermeasure being available to one Master, releasing that information to the other Masters can allow for other countermeasures to be brought forth. Most Masters should know instantly of their own Servants' identities, but something like Secret of Pedigree can block even that, and the refusal of a Servant to disclose it can keep them from knowing. In the case of a weak Master susceptible to mind control, they may forgo telling them altogether until necessary.
Famous heroes like King Arthur and Siegfried are very likely to have their identities found out more easily than others, with simply glancing upon Excalibur being enough for any Heroic Spirit to identify King Arthur. Others need to utilize their Noble Phantasms before they reveal themselves, but it may require deductive reasoning even then. While the oldest legendary hero Gilgamesh is able to show off his Noble Phantasms without many being able to guess his identity, and despite his belief that his identity should be obvious to others, he generally discloses it himself.
