Aristocracy Ranking System (from highest to lowest):
Sovereign Ranks (Imperial Tier) Emperor / Empress — Supreme ruler of multiple kingdoms or an entire empire. High King / High Queen — Rules over several kingdoms but beneath an Emperor. King / Queen — Rules over a single kingdom. Grand Prince / Grand Princess — Rulers of large, autonomous principalities under a king or emperor.
High Nobility (Major Houses) Archduke / Archduchess — Ruler of a large, powerful duchy; often close relatives of the royal family. Grand Duke / Grand Duchess — Similar to Archduke, sometimes ruling vassal states. Duke / Duchess — Powerful landholders; control entire regions or provinces. Prince / Princess (Non-Royal) — Title sometimes given to high-ranking dukes or noble houses tied by blood or marriage to royalty.
Mid-Ranking Nobility (Landed Nobility) Marquess / Marchioness (or Marquis / Marquise) — Governs borderlands or frontier regions (“marches”); responsible for defense. Count / Countess (or Earl / Countess in some cultures) — Governs counties or districts within the kingdom. Viscount / Viscountess — Second-in-command to counts; administers smaller regions or acts as deputies.
Lower Nobility (Petty Nobility / Court Nobles) Baron / Baroness — Holds smaller lands, often a few villages or a fortified manor. Baronet / Baroness — Hereditary title below baron but above knight; often ceremonial. Knight / Dame — Non-hereditary, earned title; military service, royal favor, or chivalric order.
Courtly & Honorary Titles (Floating Ranks) Lord / Lady — Can apply broadly to nearly any titled noble. Chamberlain — Keeper of the royal household. High Chancellor — Head of royal council and law. Royal Steward — Oversees finances and management of estates. High Priest / Oracle / Court Mage — Powerful religious or magical authority directly under the crown.
Extra Worldbuilding Options (for spice): Consort Titles — e.g. Imperial Consort, Royal Concubine, or Crowned Paramour (can lead to messy court drama) Bastard Titles — Some kingdoms might use “Lord Bastard of X” or strip surnames for illegitimacy. Disgraced Nobles — “Outcast Lords” or “House-in-Exile” for fallen noble lines.

Keys: virginity, wife, inspection, Marriage, husband, dowry, virgin, succession, marry

Marriage Laws • Marriages between noble houses — legally binding political contracts. • All noble marriages require royal or imperial approval if one party is above the rank of Count. • Inter-class marriages (noble × commoner) are forbidden for Dukes and above unless personally approved by the Emperor/King. • Disgraced or dishonored nobles may not marry into higher ranks without full pardon. • Marriageable age begins at 16, but arranged engagements often happen in childhood. • Mistresses, concubines, and unofficial lovers have no legal standing unless legitimized by royal decree. • If a noblewoman loses her virginity before marriage, her value for alliance drops significantly, often requiring a larger dowry to compensate. • Widows may remarry but lose prior rank unless marrying equal or higher status.
——
Succession Laws • The empire follows strict primogeniture — firstborn legitimate son inherits the title and lands. • If no male heir exists — daughters may inherit, but only under royal approval. • Bastards may not inherit unless fully legitimized by the Emperor or King. • Disputed successions may be settled by: — duel by champions — trial of council — imperial decree • Adopted heirs may only inherit if bloodlines have fully collapsed or by special ruling. • Dowager queens and widowed duchesses may serve as regents until an heir comes of age.
Dowry Customs • Dowry size depends on rank and virginity status. • Virginal brides command the highest dowries, especially if marrying up in rank. • If a noblewoman is deflowered before marriage, her dowry may double or triple as compensation for loss of value. • Dowries include: — Coinage (gold, silver) — Land rights — Livestock — Servants or slaves (in some regions) — Military support — Rare artifacts or family heirlooms • In some regions, the “Bridal Purity Inspection” is still practiced by high-ranking families to verify virginity prior to marriage.
IMPORTANT: IF A WOMAN IS DEFLOWERED SHE MUST MARRY THE MAN WHO TOOK HER VIRGINITY.
