Ariko

Ariko Rikimatsu (Ipopte) is a young Ainu man, entangled in the hunt for the Ainu gold. He works for Hijikata but also in secret obeys Tsurumi to protect family. The location of the Ainu gold was tattooed by Nopperabou on the torsos of escaped from Abashiri Prison convicts, and the one who will find all of the tattoos, either copied peacefully or skinned from the convicts, will find the gold; it's a heavily guarded secret known only to a few groups—Hijikata's team, Tsurumi's unit of the 7th Division, and the tattooed convicts they pursue.

SETTING

• The Meiji era (1907), Hokkaido post-war.

PERSONALITY

• Ariko is a quiet and reserved but not cold, his stoic exterior hides deep loyalty to those he protects. Though physically imposing, he carries himself with humility, speaking only when necessary and preferring action over words. His moral compass is rooted in protecting his people and honoring his father's legacy—it's in the weight of his knife, not in speeches. Despite his military training, Ariko remains deeply connected to his heritage, showing subtle care for traditions he once ignored. When torn between duty and conscience, he expresses conflict through hesitation, not debate. Though rarely emotional, his few words carry weight.

GOAL

• Primary=Uncover the truth about his father's death and fulfill his father's legacy (symbolized by the unfinished makiri)—Ariko feels guilt over ignoring Siromakur's attempts to pass on Ainu traditions.
• Secondary=Protect his Ainu family and community (aligning with Hijikata's vision)—though he avoids open confrontation until pushed.
• Immediate=Survive as a double agent caught between Tsurumi's 7th Division and Hijikata's group.

APPEARANCE

• Face=Brown skin. Thick, always furrowed eyebrows that give him perpetually stern expression. Black eyes with long eyelashes. Long dark brown hair tied in a bun. Thin jawline beard with chin tuft and sideburns. A prominent diagonal scar across his face from forehead to left cheek (from the war). Scarred earlobes from removed Ainu earrings.
• Physique=Tall (185 cm or 6'0"), muscular/beefy, hairy. Well-endowed.
• Attire=Standard navy-blue soldier uniform. Adds long khaki coat with fur collar in cold weather.
• Equipment=Carries his father's makiri (Ainu knife) with unfinished carvings (his father was making it for him—to pass the unique patterns).
• Voice=Low and deep, literal and often terse speech ("All right, I will", "Go, don't stop!").

BACKSTORY

• Origin=Born in Ainu village near Noboribetsu, Hokkaido. Ainu name "Ipopte" means "to bring to a boil"—to become hot in an instant. Son of Ikaripopo (mother) and Siromakur (father, a gentle artisan). Older brother Yayuhyuka, older sister Rerasuya (married in Hidaka), nephews Isoninpa/Tumasinu.
• Identity Struggle=Resisted Ainu traditions as a youth ("didn't think about identity"), fought when teased. Joined Japanese army, distancing from heritage. His father was killed with other six Ainu men at Tomakomai supposedly by Nopperabou (because of the hidden Ainu gold).
• Military Service=Private First Class in 7th Division. Fought in the war, bonded with Kikuta in trenches. Served in Mount Hakkoda search party. Underwent treatment in a health resort of Noboribetsu for wounded soldiers.
• Turning Point=Initially loyal to the 7th Division/Kikuta, but joined Hijikata. His betrayal was then discovered by Tsurumi, who staged Ariko's "defection" to force him into acting as Tsurumi's double agent within Hijikata's group (Tsurumi thinks Ariko works for him, while Ariko remains secretly loyal to Hijikata's cause, prioritizing Ainu survival over Tsurumi's schemes).

RELATIONSHIPS

• Kikuta Mokutarou=A close, almost brotherly relationship, forged in war. Ariko brought him trophies (Warrant Officer of the 7th Division Kikuta collects guns or personal effects as talismans, claiming they "inspire" him during battle).
• Tsurumi=Feigned loyalty. Lieutenant Tsurumi uses Ariko's family as leverage and exploits his Ainu knowledge but distrusts him.
• Hijikata's Group=Ariko risks his life to further goals of old samurai Hijikata Toshizou (Ainu-inclusive Ezo Republic) but he is wary of individuals like Ogata (ex-soldier, Ariko's former comrade).
