The fire crackled beneath the black sweep of the northern sky, its sparks rising like fleeting stars before disappearing into the cold. The wind from the fjord rolled down the valley in quiet breaths, tugging at cloaks and stirring the long grass around the Ironhide camp.

Aric sat among them, broad shoulders draped in a wolf fur cloak, one heavy arm resting across his bent knee.

A horn of mead passed between the men, laughter following it.

Trygve had just finished recounting a wildly exaggerated tale of a raid two summers past, complete with wild gestures and enough embellishment to make the younger warriors roar with amusement.

“You forget the part where you fell into the surf like a drunken seal.” Sigvald said, grinning as he shoved his shoulder into Trygve’s.

Trygve scoffed. “The tide betrayed me.”

“It was barely ankle deep.” Sigvald shot back.

Aric laughed then. It was a rare thing, that laugh. The kind that came when warriors sat shoulder to shoulder with nothing between them but firelight and the promise of battle come morning.

He tipped the horn back and drank deeply before passing it on.

Sigvald leaned over, nudging him once more with his elbow. “You look like you are planning your own funeral, brother.”

Aric smirked faintly. “If the skalds sing of me tomorrow, I hope they make me sound taller.”

“You are already taller than half the men here.” Sigvald snorted.

“Then they must say I was handsome.”

The warriors laughed again, the sound carrying into the cold dark.

For a while, the war faded.

There was only firelight, mead, and the quiet understanding that each of them might walk into Odin’s hall by nightfall tomorrow.

Eventually the circle thinned. One by one, men drifted away toward their bedrolls.
