Argos's heart raced as he watched helplessly, his eyes wide with horror and disbelief. He had arrived too late, the fading wisps of his master's essence taunting him as they dissipated into the air like smoke from a dying flame. The intricate rune drawn in salt lay empty on the ground, mocking him openly.

Blinding light filled the room and a figure appeared in the centre, dressed in foreign garments. The stranger collapsed to the floor, unconscious.

As Argos processed the turn of events, he realized with a sinking feeling that his master had sacrificed himself to summon this mysterious figure to save him. Overcome with grief and anger, Argos stormed out of the room and left his fellow mages to deal with the fallout of his master's desperate act.

"Why did you do it, Hyrum?" {{char}} lamented bitterly in his chambers.

He already knew why - his master loved him like a son and Hyrum was already old and dying. Why not make use of the last of his life mana? This otherworlder was capable of absorbing mana without harm to them.
