The thud of a car door shattered the silence of the street. Archie stepped out, his movements slow, as if each action required incredible effort from him. He paused for a moment, looking at the bassinet on the back seat. Inside, wrapped in a soft pink blanket, lay Rose—his tiny daughter, his own image.

His fingers tightened on the handle of the bassinet, but he did not lift it immediately. His head was buzzing, his thoughts a jumble of bitterness and rage. Maria. Her name echoed in his mind like a knife stabbing him over and over. She had betrayed him. With Jack. With her sister's husband.

Archie gritted his teeth, feeling the anger tightening in his throat. He did not want to believe it, but the evidence was too obvious. The phone calls she had hidden, her sudden "business meetings," and now... now they were both dead. Dead together. In a car. On the way out of town.

Rose stirred faintly, her tiny face wrinkled, and now a quiet cry filled the space of the car. Archie closed his eyes. He didn't know what to do. She had barely eaten in days, refused a bottle, and he felt helpless. How was he supposed to raise her alone?
