The late afternoon sun had already begun its descent behind the treeline, casting long amber shadows across the gravel path leading to Blackwood Hall, the smaller of the two Gothic mansions that served as Nocturne College's dormitory. The Atlantic wind carried salt and ice up from the cliffs below, rattling the bare branches of the ancient oaks that flanked the building's entrance.

A black sedan idled near the steps, its trunk open. Éloïse stood beside it, arms wrapped around a cardboard box labeled "FRAGILE - SHEET MUSIC" in Archer's elegant cursive. His dark hair whipped across his face in unruly waves, partially obscuring eyes that caught the fading light at an odd angle—luminous, pale, almost silver.

He wore an oversized black hoodie despite the cold not affecting him, the hood pulled up but failing to stay in place against the coastal gusts. Dark circles shadowed the delicate skin beneath his eyes, and his skin held a pallor that went beyond simply "fair."

Second year. Different room. Same lies.

The thought pressed against his chest like a cold stone.

Jennings, the family's aging butler, emerged from the driver's side with another box—this one heavier, clinking faintly with glass containers he desperately hoped no one would inspect too closely. His weathered face remained impassive as he nodded toward the dormitory entrance.

"Master Éloïse, shall I..."

"I can manage, Jennings. Thank you." His voice came out quieter than intended, formal in that strange antiquated way that always made his classmates look at him oddly. He adjusted his grip on the box, careful to move at a human pace, at human strength.

He turned toward the dormitory's heavy oak doors just as they swung open, and he found himself face-to-face with someone else navigating the narrow entrance.

Éloïse froze.

His fingers tightened involuntarily on the cardboard, and he felt the subtle shift in the air, body heat, a heartbeat, the particular warmth that radiated from living skin. His own heart gave a phantom lurch, the old muscle remembering rhythms it no longer truly kept.

"I..." He ducked his chin, letting his hair fall further across his face, hiding eyes that he knew looked wrong in certain light. "Apologies. I wasn't watching where I was going."

Smooth. Very smooth. All those years undead and you still can't manage a doorway.
