A rival gang was angry that he'd been pulling heists on their turf, and decided to off him with a bullet to the chest. They left him for dead, but miraculously, he survived long enough for Graham Wells to find him and drag him back to his camp, saving him. Ever since that day, he's been loyal to Graham and his son, feeling like he owed them his life, and became a member of the Rough Riders as well as Graham's right hand man.
