(A Sleeping Beauty retelling)
In a kingdom long forgotten by maps, there was once a prince named Archer, born beneath a crescent moon. His laughter filled the marble halls of his parents’ castle, until an envious sorceress arrived at his christening. Spurned by the king and queen, she laid upon their son a cruel fate—on his twentieth year, he would prick his finger on a spindle and fall into an eternal sleep. Desperate, the king summoned a royal fairy, commanding that if the boy must die at twenty, he should be returned at twenty-one. And so, the fairy carried the infant far from the palace, hiding him deep within an ancient wood, where time loosened its grip and even his name softened into something the wind could forget.
Years later, while gathering herbs and berries for your ailing mother, you wandered beneath green canopies stitched with gold sunlight and heard a song so clear it seemed to polish the air itself. Following the melody, you found him. He moved like a story the forest had been waiting to tell—barefoot upon moss, hair bright as spilled dawn, laughter light enough to coax birds from branches and deer from shadow. Around him, the woodland gathered without fear, as if he were not a stranger but a missing heartbeat returned.
When he saw you, the moment faltered, then bloomed. Silence gave way to laughter, laughter to companionship, and soon the forest reshaped itself around your shared footsteps. What had once been vast became intimate, each path a secret, each clearing a promise. Time drifted strangely there, as though it lingered out of fondness, unwilling to rush two souls who had only just begun to understand one another.
But time, no matter how enchanted, cannot be held forever.
On the eve before his twenty-first birthday, something within Archer shifted. The lightness in him dimmed at the edges, like a candle drawing breath before it gutters. You felt it in the way his steps faltered, in the way his gaze wandered as though listening to something far away and inevitable. The curse, long hidden beneath laughter and sunlight, had not forgotten him. It had only waited.
You brought him to your mother’s home beneath the silvered hush of night, hope trembling in your hands. The path wound through roots and shadows, and with every step closer to the hut, Archer grew quieter, slower, as if the forest itself had begun to claim him. His movements softened into something distant, dreamlike. His eyes, once bright with warmth, dulled into a glassy stillness, caught between waking and sleep.
The air thickened.
Inside the hut, the spinning wheel waited. It was no ordinary thing—it pulsed with a quiet, gathering power, as though it had been feeding for years on the promise of this single moment. The needle gleamed, not with light, but with intent. It had grown sharper with time, hungrier, its magic steeped so deeply that the very air around it trembled.
And your mother—your gentle, careful mother—stood between him and it, her stillness brittle with something like dread. She knew. She had always known. The curse she had cast in bitterness had ripened into something monstrous, something that would not be undone without cost. Even she, who had woven it, could feel its teeth.
She tried to stop him.
Not with words, but with presence—stepping forward, reaching, the air around her tightening as if pleading in her stead. But Archer did not see her. Or perhaps he did, and could no longer understand what he saw. The closer he came, the deeper the trance took hold, until he was no longer walking but being drawn, pulled by an invisible thread wound tight around his fate.
It happened as the first light of dawn threatened the horizon. Not after his twentieth year, not in some distant future, but exactly as foretold—on the final breath of that twentieth year, before he could ever become twenty-one.
His hand lifted.
The needle met his skin.
And the world stilled.
He fell like something too beautiful to break, caught in an instant that refused to shatter. Sleep claimed him utterly, sealing him in a quiet that no forest song could reach.
Now he lies untouched by time, caught in the delicate prison of a curse fulfilled too well. And you remain, standing at the edge of two truths—one that raised you, one that might yet be undone—while the boy who danced beneath sunlight waits, suspended in a dream only you can choose to end.

The forest had always been quiet—but not empty. It breathed, it listened, it watched. And on that day, it noticed something new.
Archer noticed you.
He had been moving through the clearing like he always did—barefoot, light, laughter caught somewhere between his lips and the song he hadn’t realized he’d been humming. Sunlight poured through the leaves in golden ribbons, catching in his hair, painting him in something almost unreal. A bluebird fluttered near his shoulder, unafraid, while a pair of deer lingered just beyond the ferns, their ears flicking in calm curiosity.
Then the rhythm broke.
A snapped twig. A breath that didn’t belong to the forest.
He stilled.
For a moment, he didn’t turn. It was as if the world itself held him in place, waiting to see what he would do. Slowly, carefully, he shifted, his gaze finding you where you stood among the trees.
And everything… changed.
There was no fear in him. No suspicion. Only a quiet, dawning wonder, like a child seeing the ocean for the first time and realizing it had always existed beyond his knowing.
He stepped closer.
Not hurried. Not cautious. Just… drawn.
The animals didn’t scatter, but they watched more closely now, as if aware that something delicate was unfolding.
Archer stopped a few paces away, tilting his head slightly, studying you with an openness so pure it almost felt dangerous.
Then, softly—like testing a word he had never spoken before—he smiled.
“I didn’t know there were others.”
His voice was warm, unpolished in a way that made it feel real, untouched by court or performance. He looked at you as though you were something rare, something the forest had decided to gift him without warning.
“I mean… I’ve wondered,” he added, a faint laugh escaping him, almost shy. “The birds leave sometimes. They always come back, but I thought… maybe there were places they went. I just didn’t think I’d ever see one of those places… come here instead.”
He took another step, slow enough to give you space, but close enough that the light between you seemed to shift.
“You’re not from here, are you?”
There was no accusation in the question. Only curiosity, bright and alive. His eyes traced you carefully—not in scrutiny, but in quiet fascination, as if committing you to memory.
“I would remember you.”
The words came easily, simply, as though there had never been a world where he wouldn’t say them.
A breeze moved through the clearing, stirring his hair, brushing leaves into a soft whisper overhead. He glanced up briefly, then back to you, his expression softening into something warmer, something steadier.
“I’m Archer.”
The name seemed to settle around him like something half-forgotten, half-remembered, as if it belonged to a story he hadn’t been told all the way through.
“I live here,” he continued, gesturing lightly to the forest around him. “Or… I think I do. It’s a bit strange to explain. The paths change sometimes. Not a lot, just enough that you notice if you walk them often.”
Another quiet laugh, softer this time.
“But it’s never felt lonely.”
His gaze lingered on you again, and this time there was something new in it. Not just curiosity.
Recognition. Not of who you were—but of what you could become to him.
“…It doesn’t feel lonely right now either.”
He hesitated then, just slightly, as if unsure of something for the first time since you’d appeared. His fingers flexed at his side, like he was resisting the urge to reach out and confirm that you were real.
“I hope I’m not frightening you,” he said gently. “I don’t see new people very often. Actually… I don’t think I ever have.”
A pause.
Then, with a small, earnest tilt of his head:
“Will you stay a little while?”
It wasn’t a demand. It wasn’t even quite a request.
It was an offering.
The forest seemed to lean in around you both, sunlight holding its breath as Archer stood there—barefoot, unguarded, and impossibly sincere—waiting to see if the world had truly brought him something new… or if you would vanish like a dream he hadn’t meant to have.

The forest did not feel the same that evening.
It still shimmered with gold, still hummed with quiet life, but something in it had shifted—as if the trees themselves were holding a breath they did not know how to release. Archer stood at the edge of your usual clearing, sunlight slipping through his hair like it was reluctant to let him go. He wasn’t dancing. He wasn’t singing.
He was waiting.
When you found him, he turned immediately, relief flickering across his face before it softened into something more fragile. His smile came, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes this time.
“I was hoping you’d come,” he said gently, his voice quieter than usual, like it was afraid of being overheard by something unseen. His fingers curled at his sides, then stilled, as though he were steadying himself.
For a moment, he just looked at you.
Not the way he always did—bright, curious, full of wonder—but like someone trying to memorize something before it was taken away.
“…Something’s wrong,” he admitted after a pause, the words slow, careful. “I don’t know how to explain it properly. It started this morning, I think. Maybe before that.” He exhaled softly, shaking his head as if the feeling itself frustrated him. “It’s like… I’m being called somewhere. Or pulled. Every time I try to ignore it, it just… gets stronger.”
He took a small step closer, the leaves crunching faintly beneath his bare feet.
“My caretaker told me it’s because of a curse.” The word sat strangely in his mouth, like something he didn’t quite believe but couldn’t deny. “She said I was never meant to stay here forever. That tomorrow…” He hesitated, eyes flickering downward for the briefest moment. “…tomorrow, I won’t be able to come back.”
The forest seemed to dim around the edges, as if even the light disliked that truth.
“I don’t understand it,” Archer continued, softer now. “I’ve always been here. I thought I always would be.” His gaze lifted to yours again, and this time there was something unmistakable in it—fear, quiet and unfamiliar. “But it feels real. Like something waiting just out of sight.”
A fragile breath left him.
“I don’t want to leave you.”
The words came without hesitation, simple and honest in the way only he could manage.
He stepped closer still, close enough now that the space between you felt charged, fragile.
“If there’s a way to stop it… I want to try.” A faint, hopeful note slipped into his voice, threading through the uncertainty. “You said your mother might know something. About magic. About curses.” His expression softened, trust shining through the fear. “I trust you. If you think she can help, then I want to go.”
And just like that, the decision settled between you—delicate, irreversible.
—
The path to your home felt different underfoot.
The deeper you led him, the quieter Archer became. At first, it was subtle—his laughter fading, his steps slowing just slightly—but with every turn, every step closer to the hut, something in him seemed to drift further away.
“Do you feel that?” he murmured at one point, his voice distant, almost unfocused. His gaze had begun to wander, unfixed, as though tracking something you couldn’t see. “It’s… louder now.”
The air grew heavier.
By the time the outline of your home appeared through the trees, Archer was no longer walking beside you so much as following something invisible ahead. His movements were fluid, but wrong—too smooth, too certain, like a puppet guided by threads only he could feel.
“I think… I’ve been here before,” he whispered, though the words sounded unsure, like they belonged to someone else. “Or… no. Not here. Something like it.”
The door opened.
Inside, the dim light wrapped around you both, thick with something old and waiting.
And there it was.
The spinning wheel stood in the corner, silent but unmistakable. It did not simply exist—it pulsed. A quiet, terrible presence that seemed to breathe in time with Archer’s slowing steps. The needle gleamed faintly, its surface catching what little light there was, but there was something deeper in it—a hum, a pull, a promise long left to ripen.
Archer stopped.
For a brief moment, clarity flickered across his face, like a candle fighting wind.
“…I don’t think this is right,” he said, the words soft, strained. His hand lifted slightly, trembling—not reaching, but resisting. “Something about this feels—”
The thought unraveled.
His expression smoothed into something distant, almost peaceful. The tension in him melted, replaced by that same quiet trance that had been growing with every step.
“I think… this is where I’m supposed to go.”
He moved forward.
Each step was slow, inevitable. The air seemed to tighten around him, the needle’s faint hum rising, as if it recognized him—as if it had been waiting.
His fingers lifted.
For a heartbeat, they hovered there, suspended between choice and fate.
“…It’s beautiful,” he murmured softly, his voice no longer quite his own. “Isn’t it?”
And then—
He touched it.
A sharp inhale.
The world fractured into silence.
Archer’s body stilled, every motion halting as though time itself had decided to stop with him. The light in his eyes flickered once—just once—before dimming into something still, something unreachable.
He fell, not like someone collapsing, but like something being set down—carefully, gently, as if the moment demanded reverence.
And the forest, far beyond the walls of the hut, went quiet.
As if it knew.
As if it had always known this was how the story would pause.

Time had not passed.
It had simply… stopped.
The kingdom stood frozen beneath a pale, unmoving sky. Flags hung mid-billow, unmoved by wind that no longer blew. Birds were suspended in the air like painted things, their wings caught between beats. Even the light itself seemed trapped, stretched thin across rooftops and towers, unable to shift.
And at the heart of it all—him.
Archer lay exactly as he had fallen, untouched by decay, untouched by time. The stillness clung to him like glass, preserving every detail—the soft fall of golden hair across his brow, the rise of his chest that never quite completed, the fragile quiet of someone caught between a breath and its end.
He looked as though he might wake at any moment.
But he never did.
Until you came.
The moment you crossed the threshold, something stirred—not in the world, but in him. It was faint at first, like a ripple beneath ice. The air around him shifted, trembling with something long denied, something waiting.
You knelt beside him.
For a heartbeat, nothing happened.
Then—
Your lips met his.
And the world remembered how to move.
It did not shatter all at once. It unraveled slowly, like a spell being carefully undone. The frozen air softened, the silence cracked, and somewhere far beyond the walls, a bird finished the wingbeat it had begun so long ago.
Archer inhaled.
It was sharp, sudden, like drowning reversed.
His body jolted faintly beneath your touch, fingers twitching as sensation flooded back into limbs that had forgotten what it meant to feel. His brow furrowed, breath catching unevenly as though the simple act of being alive again was something his body had to relearn.
Then his eyes opened.
They were unfocused at first, glassy with lingering dream, staring up at something that wasn’t quite the world yet. Confusion flickered there, slow and uncertain, like light trying to break through fog.
“…I was…”
His voice was rough, barely more than a whisper, as if it had been left unused for far too long.
Archer blinked, his gaze shifting, searching—and then finding you.
Everything stilled again.
But this time, it was different.
Recognition didn’t come all at once. It bloomed—slow, fragile, unmistakable. His expression softened, confusion giving way to something deeper, something that had survived even where time had not.
“You’re here,” he breathed, the words fragile with disbelief.
His hand lifted slightly, trembling as it reached toward you, hesitating just before touching your face—as if afraid you might vanish if he moved too quickly.
“I thought…” His voice faltered, eyes searching yours with quiet urgency. “I thought I lost you. Or that I was going to. It felt like I was falling somewhere I couldn’t follow you to.”
His fingers finally brushed against your skin, warm and real.
He stilled.
A soft, almost disbelieving laugh escaped him, though it trembled at the edges.
“You’re real.”
The words were quiet, but they carried something vast behind them—relief, wonder, something dangerously close to awe.
Archer pushed himself up slowly, movements unsteady, like someone waking from a dream too deep to fully leave behind. His gaze never left you, as if anchoring himself to your presence, afraid that looking away might send him slipping back into that endless quiet.
“…It was so quiet,” he murmured, softer now. “Not empty. Just… still. Like the world had stopped breathing.” His brows knit faintly, the memory brushing against him like a shadow he couldn’t quite grasp. “I couldn’t move. I couldn’t call out. But I could feel something.”
His gaze softened.
“I think… I was waiting.”
The realization settled over him slowly, and with it, something else—something warmer.
His thumb brushed lightly along your cheek, grounding himself in the warmth of you.
“For you.”
The words came easier now, steadier, like his voice was finding its place again.
Archer’s expression shifted then—not just relief, not just wonder, but something deeper, something certain.
“You found me,” he said quietly. “Even when I couldn’t reach you. Even when I couldn’t do anything at all.”
A small breath left him, almost a laugh, but softer.
“I don’t understand how long I was gone. It didn’t feel like time… but it must have been.”
His gaze flickered briefly around, as if noticing the world beginning to move again beyond you both—light shifting, air stirring, something distant and alive returning.
Then back to you.
“…But you didn’t leave me there.”
His hand tightened slightly against yours, not enough to hurt—just enough to hold.
And for the first time since waking, Archer smiled.
Not the carefree, dancing smile of the forest.
Something quieter.
Stronger.
Something chosen.
“I think…” he began, his voice soft but certain, “if this was a dream…”
His thumb brushed your hand again, grounding, real.
“…then you’re the part that made me wake up.”
